And thus why my hate for Kira is justified, that and he's just a shitty character which Fukada created, along with the rest of Seed and Seed Destiny, Fukada should never, ever do AU Gundam again. And yes it was that goddamn bad. Nayuki deserves more love, so does Keroro Gunso, and Fate Testerossa, also Desu beating Fate is pure bull in both Moe and Character contest, makes me so want to strangle her. Haruhi better also nuke Seed to oblivion as Kira cut through her place in line.

I only recognize three or four people on that list.
Anyway, yeah, it needs better characters. I also think Naruto and Ichigo should have been somewhat higher.

I can not believe that Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and the rest of the Straw hats are not on this list. I can not figure it out.
P.S. Is it just me, or is anyone else having a hard time figuring out that chart?

Yeah, I just figured out two more characters on it. I still have no idea who the majority of them are.

Is this a magazine poll? Aside from a few mainstays like Black Jack and Nausicaa, it seems very trendy. No Doraemon, DBZ, or Totoro.

You have to keep in mind the following-
- This is a Japanese poll. Japanese fans favorite series differ slightly
- Often, depending on who's polled, these things vary greatly. These kind of lists are made frequently, and the larger range of ages and sexes, the larger range of characters. More Older Woman= a high rating for Candy White from Candy Candy for example. More Women in their mid 20's= higher ratings for Sailor Moon. More 16-24 year old male Otaku= more of whatever's the current flavor of the week. More 8 year olds= Naruto and Doraemon
- What's popular HERE is often popular in Japan 2-3 years ago. Which is aggggesss ago for the attention span of Japanese fandom
- Dude, Macross is like 25 years old now. That's limitlessly old there. And in Japan, though it's a classic, it has nowhere near the following of Gundam. Same thing to some degree with Dragonball, which ended 10 years ago there.
- Alucard is from just one of many popular seinen manga that has had an anime here or there. The stuff that drives these lists is the stuff popular with obsessive otaku at this point in time. Like Whatever show the Fujoshi make the Most Doujinshi Of This Moment[Look! Gundam Seed Destiny at #1... I suspect Fujoshi/Fangirls were polled], or Mildly Generic Harem Show of the Week [Is that you, Haruhi? #4].
Remember these things, and the lists will make more sense!
A poll of American fans will wield something different, and again those will vary depending on the ages of people polled.
And Rei's #37. You can't escape the Rei!
Mangazine polls are VERY trendy. It's Otaku/Fujoshi centric, while TV polls will also cover general audienes [which are the people who watch Doraemon].
but hey, it's not all bad- Naussicaa at 25!

Paploo is correct.
Japan isn't as nostalgic as we are. Once an anime show becomes 4 years old, or older, it tends to be forgotten in Japan.
Here, we remember all our old favourites carefully.
My own top 100 anime character list would be loaded with DBZ, Sailor Moon, InuYasha, Ranma, El Hazard, Slayers, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Full Metal Alchemist, Excel Saga, and Tenchi characters (I'd admittably do a disservice to mecha-based shows, NGE notwithstanding).
However, a lot of these shows are ancient over in Japan.

I don't like seeing the SEEDs that high.
Surprise surprise....
1. Kanon only has 1 character in?
2. About 44 male characters in top 100.
3. There're 11 male characters rank Top 20.
4. There're 7 male characters rank Top 10
5. Three of top ten from Gundam Seed Destiny [GSD]. [Not surprised]
6. Two of top ten from Code Geass.
7. Most anime characters in top 100 from GSD [6 characters].
8. All four main character from Tsubasa Chronicle made the Top 100.
9. Suzumiya Haruhi has only 3 characters in top 100. [Kyon wasn't in it.]
10. Non of Mai Otome characters got in! [Even Mai Hime only has 1.]
FAIL with a capital REJECTED!!!
The fact that this list lacks Ranma Saotome, Lum, Mink, Cutey Honey, Kenshiro, Guts, Captain Harlock, Ifurita, Tenchi Masaki, etc tells me that the Japanese caption means "Top 100 of the last few years". I don't know what it actually says, but that's what it means. Just another popularity contest, as ignorable as the last one was, or the next one will be.

I don't quite understand why me being right merits that...... I don't think I've ever given bad info or advice on these forums. I'm hoping that's a sense of humour you're expressing.
Gundam Seed/Seed Destiny are super duper popular in Japan, far more then it is here, especially with female fans, who are a pretty strong force in Japan. Haruhi's smaller presence is probably due to being a fairly recent phenomenon, though #4 is nothing to snuff at. Still, this looks to be a list from an anime magazine, and thus is uber Otaku centric, focusing on shows either currently airing in Japan, or ones that just finished their runs. I mean, if this were a broader list, we'd see a lot more anime from the 70's and 80's making it onto this list.
And Tom and Jerry, who tend to ALWAYS make any broad list of anime characters/shows. They regularly make TV Asahi's perennial polls [which are more representative of fandom, as well as the general publics most loved anime in Japan..... they interview seniors, students, adults, kids, in a good broad range]
http://www.tv-asahi.co.jp/anime100/ Here's their most recent list. I'm amused that GuGu Gan Ganmo made the bottom of the list..... I'll check for english translations of lists like these later, but the point is there's a GAZILLION of these lists, and it's a silly thing to get your ire raised over :)
Though I'd love to see some love for Chum Fau from Dunbine/LGaim
BTW----
Berserk is something I'd see making US top 100's, but in Japan, it was a late night anime, and not even a really big hit one, and aired about 10 years ago now http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=328 The people fueling these lists now in Japan would of been 12 or so when it first aired, so they probably didn't see it at the time. Those who did might of moved on from anime fandom too, so it's fans probably aren't as many nowadays. It's pretty much forgotten by the masses, though it's still popular with violent seinen manga fans ^_^ And I wouldn't be unsurprised to see it pop up on a list or two here and there, as it is a great show. It's just something that like Cowboy Bebop, and Trigun, is far more popular among US fans then it was in Japan. Though the manga's still popular, so that's why you still see new merchandise popping up [which is successful in part due to being imported domestically]

Ryuugu Rena placed higher than Naruto. I feel validated for some reason. :)

Sounds like a bunch of idiots who made that list.
Welcome to Japan. Land of idiots then.
What? You expected Japan's polls of favorite Anime characters to match America's? Ha. Have you seen their magazines?
Also, each magazine has a different readership, so I'm sure whatever mag this is from differs from another.
As for number 26, I'm guessing it's a J-Drama based on a manga. I'm guessing Honey & Clover from what I hear is popular. (Oh wait.. someone faked their own photo onto the list instead of Light as seen in the later one. Well, at least Light and L are on there.)
Gundam Seed holds the top three slots of course. As big as it is here, Gundam is even more huge in Japan. Seed is the latest craze. (Whoops, first one is Code Geass. That's only fansubbed here, meanwhile fans can just turn on the TV there to watch it.)
At 4, Haruhi fandom is crazy. I still don't get it myself. I see some other chracters from it scattered around.
What is 5? De Gray Man? I see another guy on there from it.
FMA seems to hold in there. Ed at least. Ichigo from Bleach is on there. Both are ahead of Naruto and Sasuke.
Detective Conan is still going strong after all these years.
Sgt Frog is huge in Japan and yet still very obscure here.
I think I see some Clamp with Code Geass (or whatever) and XXXaholic or Tsubasa Chronicles.
37. (37?!) Rei's still on there somehow. Gainax still keeps the fandom I guess. Eva did hit Japan pretty good.
That Shonen Jump show Gintama's at 34.
At 24 and 84 we have classic charcters like Black Jack and Nausicca.
There are a ton others I reconize, but eh.
Hell, except for a bunch of really hardcore anime fangirls, how many fans even know about that Ouran High School Host Club?
Well, Papaloo and others basically saiud all that already. I should start reading the whole damn thread before I start replying.
Is this a magazine poll? Aside from a few mainstays like Black Jack and Nausicaa, it seems very trendy. No Doraemon, DBZ, or Totoro.
Yup. Trendy is the word. This is likley based on what's being show on television. There's a buncha shows on TV in Japan vs the US where a good majority is direct to DVD. Though we see a lot more anime on TV here, it's still nothing compared to Japan. Just look at the totally different way new shows are introduced there vs here.
No Berserk.....?
Oh please. As much as I love the show, I'd say Berserk as well as Hellsing are more cult followings. They're not THAT popular in comparison to these other more popular shows.
Plus, more people are going to watch the cuter shows and the romance shows and the Gundam shows, than something a little more extreme like Berserk and Hellsing.

(I haven't seen/read either, so I'm not sure how accurate that is.) Unlike Shinn, though, he has only basic piloting skills... Which is kinda refreshing in a mecha anime.

I'm bumping this old thread because I recently saw all of Code Geass Season 1 (subbed), the first few episodes of Code Geass Season 2, all of Gundam Seed Destiny, and almost all of Gundam Seed (yes, I watched Gundam Seed Destiny first - I thought it might be interesting to watch the sequel first; maybe get a Star Wars feel out of it ;) ).
I've also watched Ouran High, Fate/Stay Night, Shakugan no Shana (both seasons), and Busou Renkin, since I commented on this list a long time ago.
After all of this watching, I have to say... this list makes a lot more sense to me now.
Code Geass (thus far), and Gundam Seed are genuinely good animes with very compelling characters.
I still say that this list is biased a fair bit towards very recent anime, but that's about the only complaint that I'd make about it.
Kira, Athrun, Lelouch (Zero), and several other characters from both Gundam Seed and Code Geass are very complex, intriguing, and well fleshed-out characters. Kira and Athrun also tend to be likeable characters (moreso in Gundam Seed though - Gundam Seed Destiny has some flaws that it's predecessor doesn't suffer from, imo).
Frankly, I think that these three deserve to be higher than Haruhi Suzumiya - Haruhi is a more complex and multifaceted character than some give her credit for, but she doesn't resonate with me the way that Kira, Athrun, and/or Lelouch do.
Haruhi can be fascinating, but so can Kira, Athrun and/or Lelouch... and I like Kira, and Athrun.
I've never really been into mecha shows before, partly since it's a branch of anime that my closest anime-watching friends aren't really all that much into. However, after giving several Gundam shows, and Code Geass, a try, I have to say... mecha anime can be exceedingly well-done and tell some awesome stories with great characters.
This list actually isn't all that bad for a list focused largely on recent anime. I don't quite get the placement of certain Bleach characters on this list, in the sense that I'm surprised by the order that they're in (not that they're there - they probably deserve to be there), but that's probably my only minor gripe about the list.
