The title has been revamped due to Armageddon (seriously. Everyone died, Spawn became stronger than Satan and God, exiling both to space, then revived Earth. Everyone remembers dying, Spawn is back to "early issues" power level, and he found out that he never deserved Wanda after all because he was abusive and killed their unborn child. He's alone now).
Issue 164 is definitely a good starting point for new, or former, Spawn fans.
The arc before this (Armageddon) was pretty good. A lot better than most of the comics between 100-150.
If all else fails, go to Wikipedia.
Oh yeah, the reason why Wanda always said that she and Al couldn't have a child wasn't because they physically can't. It's because he's was so disorderly that he would only cause harm to the children.

No it doesn't suck in fact it's better now than in years. I would highly reccommend that you pick up an issue or two. I'm really happy with where the series is going.

all that rapture/armageddon stuff sounds kinda weird...

If God & Satan were exiled, who's the old white lady that Spawn took hostage to get his friend back from the angels supposed to be?

That happened before the exiling. The exiling happened in issue 162. Spawn finding out about what he did to Wanda happened in 163. And that situation happened even earlier (before the world was ruined).

I'm glad I gave up on the series at #62. It would be a shame to read that a core reason of the series was always Al Simmons missing his wife. That he made that deal to be near his wife. The changes read pretty sad.

yeah its really good thus far, I cant wait for 26.
Which is the new start, the next one is a one shot about "Mandarin spawn" a ancient Asian spawn. Might be cool but I am really looking forward to the new direction of the book.

Well I didn't want to pick up the trades cos' I spend too much on monthlies but was interested in the new take by Hine. So I just picked up issue 164 and even though the only previous Spawn I'de read was 1-10 It did feel like a good jumping on point. However because of Philip Tan's art I'm now gonna have to add Spawn:Godslayer to my pull list. AAAArgh why do the pull list's keep on growing.
copy n' paste - lazy me!

Dang, I've been outa the loop since original #22...
Even back then, they made it sound like he was getting weak already. And yet he still has the power to take on God, Satan AND revive the entire world from the Apocolypse??? WTF?!?
So if I left off on 22, what important parts did I miss before the whole Apocolypse thing starts after 150? Should I still cut to the chase AFTER 150, or are there a few key issues along the way that really helps with the character arc/developement?
I stopped collecting when McFarlane started letting weak artists work on the comic.

Same here. I havent collected Spawn in ages (or comcis for that matter but Im gettin back into it). So what does McFarlane have to do with Spawn these days if anything? What ever happened to the countdown thing? Gees back in the day it sold over a mill copies now I think it around 20 thousand! WOW.

David Hine has been weaving some very dark tales since issue 150. The artist was Phil Tan, who really improved during his run.
Brian Haberlin is taking over the artwork, using a very photo like art style.
If the last time you read the book Greg Capullo was the artist, well, the book has never really been that good visually since.
But, David Hine is crafting intresting moody stuff, I can't help but wish Greg was drawing it.

Does the trade include The variant covers from issue 150 printed at full size?

Hmm, I wouldn't know. I just have the single issues. Maybe you should go to the comic forums on spawn.com. Someone would know there.

this may seem funny, but I have had spawn pulled for me at my LCS since the beggining.
I have every single issue, but i havent read past 60 something IIRC.
that rapture/war with God/Mal seems pretty interesting...
maybe i should read them lol.
btw, i just read the mandarin spawn, pretty good, pretty good (always loved the issues with historical spawns). Is it a one shot? could definitely get down with a 3 book arc or somethin...

Heys, whatever happened with cogliostro? Wasn't he Cain or something?

From what I've read, it's really hit and miss. Part of it is interesting, and part of it is uninspired (and if I was more familiar with the Spawn universe, it may be deeply derivative as well).
That said, I read Hellspawn: The Ashley Wood Collection a few days ago and there's some pretty compelling segments (namely, the parts without Spawn). Actually, if you can dig it up, the one-shot Spawn: Blood and Shadow from the late 90's is the best presentation I've come across of the character.

Spawn was always an intresting idea that suffered because nobody realy did anything with it.
Glad to see they took the best part of the book and got rid of it. :o
In the beginning it was good....but then I heard this:
WARNINGWARNINGWARNINGWARNING!!!!!!!!!!! SPOILER QUESTION!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aren't Sam & Twitch Dead now too?

Begin Spoilers
No, they aren't. They did die, but then Spawn brought them (and the entire human race) back from the dead.
End Spoilers
But as to Spawn sucking, I happen to really like him and his book! The entire Armageddon thing was fantastic and took a really interesting take on the best selling book in history. No, I'm not talking about Harry Potter... the Bible! As someone who studies the Bible as both a religious text and as a historical document, Spawn really appeals to me. The writers integrated some Gnostic texts (stuff that didn't make it into the final version of the Bible) and added their own spin to it. I also have somewhat of a fascination with the anti-hero in general, and Spawn happens to be a perfect example of that.

Spawn was stale from about issues 108 to 120.
After issue 150 I really got back into the book, david Hine has done an amazing job on the series. I hope he stays for awhile. the story has gotten very interesting. As of 166 I'm looking forward to the next one.
I have been collecting Spawn since issue 1.

I'm listening to the poscast right now! Pretty cool... :)
I've been rereading the old Spawn issues in the new huge-tradepaperbacks just released and I've heard some good things about David Hine's take on the series (should be picking up the two Armageddon trades soon as well).

Nothing. Really. Spawn just sucks. For years it didnīt go anywhere.
And now the only reason that Spawn exists is perverted. Just sad.
