I'm seriously considering going to Wonder-Con this year and noticed that the programming was finally posted during the week. Here's what caught my attention for the weekend:
FRIDAY
3:00-4:00 The Sergio and Mark Show— They’ve collaborated so many times, they’ve probably lost count, but WonderCon special guests Sergio Aragonés and Mark Evanier are best-known for their work on a certain wandering barbarian named Groo. Sergio draws it, Evanier … well, we’re not quite sure what Evanier does on Groo, but that’s okay, because neither is Mark. Groo celebrates his 25th anniversary this year and Mark and Sergio will talk about the banner year ahead and maybe even mention something about a movie … maybe. Room 236
4:00-5:00 DC Nation—Dan DiDio— Dan DiDio, Senior VP—Executive Editor DCU, and Bob Wayne, VP—Sales, are joined by Matt Idelson, Senior Editor—DCU, Jann Jones, Coordinating Editor—DCU, and others to call upon the DC NATION once again! Don’t miss the news on what will sure to be the most talked about events of the coming year! Open to current DC NATION members and new recruits! Room 200
5:00-6:00 Spotlight on Brian K. Vaughan— One of the most exciting and topical writers working in comics today, WonderCon special guest Brian K. Vaughan's work includes Ex Machina, Y: The Last Man, and Runaways. His recent graphic novel with artist with artist Niko Henrichon, Pride of Baghdad, garnered praise from both the mainstream and comics press. Brian talks about his work in this special spotlight panel. Room 200
SATURDAY
11:00-12:00 ComicBase/Atomic Avenue— Join ComicBase, the world's #1 program for managing comic collections, as we reveal our newest products and developments for a WonderCon exclusive event. Be there for the unveiling of Atomic Avenue, the revolutionary new online system that will allow you to buy and sell your comics online, powered by our massive ComicBase database. And don't miss the chance to hear creator Pete Bickford chat about special ComicBase program features, tips and tricks, or get all the behind-the-scenes dirt on the making of the program—or your chance to win limited edition prizes and giveaways! Room 236
12:30-2:00 DC Universe 2007: Great Expectations— Dan DiDio, Senior VP—Executive Editor DCU, and Bob Wayne, VP—Sales, are joined by Matt Idelson, Senior Editor—DCU, Jann Jones, Coordinating Editor—DCU, Judd Winick (Green Arrow, Outsiders), Mark Waid (52, Supergirl & The Legion of Super-Heroes), Phil Jimenez (Infinite Crisis) and others for a panel that’s not to be missed. Catch up on the secrets of 52 and what lies ahead for the World’s Greatest Super-Heroes! Room 200
5:45-6:45 DC Universe: Super Heroes Go DVD— DC Comics, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video have joined forces to create a new series of DVDs based on DC Comics' popular graphic novels. Join animation legend Bruce Timm (Batman Beyond, Superman: The Animated Series) and DC Comics luminaries Dan DiDio (Senior Vice President/Executive Editor) and Gregory Noveck (Senior Vice President/Creative Affairs) as they guide you through the intricacies of translating these iconic characters, revered stories and dazzling artwork from acclaimed graphic novels to animated life. In addition to a captivating Q&A, the panel will include a sneak peek of the animation triumvirate's first DVD release ... featuring a caped wonder and rumors of his early demise. Esplanade Ballroom
SUNDAY
11:30-12:30 Comics Podcasting— Podcasting has become a significant force in the world of comic books. Come join podcasters Lene Taylor and Logan Hall of the I Read Comics podcast, along with Conor Kilpatrick and Ron Richards from iFanboy.com, and discuss the fine art of talking about comics on the web. Whether you've got questions about doing your own podcast, or just want to see some of the faces behind the voices, this is the place to be. Moderated by James Sime of Isotope, the Comic Book Lounge! Room 220
11:30-12:30 Comic Retailer Roundtable— Join moderator Dan Shahin (Hijinx Comics) and fellow comic retailers Joe Ferrara (Atlantis Fantasyworld), Joe Field (Flying Colors), Brian Hibbs (Comix Experience) and Ryan Higgins (Comics Conspiracy), for an up to the minute look into the realities of modern comic book retailing. Special focus will be placed on recent industry changes and how retailers are adapting and planning for the future. Room 228
2:00-3:00 Cover Story: The Art of the Cover— The old adage is true, even in comic books: You can’t judge a book by its cover, but here are six artists who may argue that point. Moderator Mark Evanier talks to WonderCon special guests Nick Cardy (the dean of DC Comics’ cover artists in the 70s), Gene Colan (Daredevil, Tomb of Dracula), Al Feldstein (editor of the E. C. line of comics and Mad Magazine), Tony Harris (Starman, Ex Machina), Phil Jimenez (Wonder Woman, Infinite Crisis) and Michael Turner (Fathom, Soulfire, and covers for Civil War and Identity Crisis) about what makes a great cover. Room 200
Right now, I'm leaning towards attending on Sunday. I've been caught up with my monthly books for a while now and have been enjoying the heck out of iFanboy recently. At the same time, I'm still very loyal to my LCS and think that it's only right for me to attend the retailer panel seeing as Ryan will be appearing on the panel. The only thing that would make it a perfect day would be if the ComicBase session was also on the last day. I've been eyeballing that software for a while and would love to learn a little more about it. It's also a bit of a bummer that Marvel has no presence at this Con...again.
What do others think? If you were going to attend, which panels would you recommend?
