View Full Version : 30 Hour Comic project

After getting this advice a few months back at CBR, I've decided that to get my creative juices flowing again (and to start drawing again PERIOD) I'm doing a 24 Hour comic, except the big difference for me is, it'll be a 30 Hour comic done over 30 days, an hour each day (I just don't have the time to do a full day of drawing). I'm hoping to start today. I have little idea what it's going to be, as I think one of the rules is you can't plan any ideas until you actually start making it.

Here's more info on a 24 Hour Comic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24_hour_comic

I think this will be good for me, as I won't sweat the details and over plan it, but never do it. I'll just sit down and start drawing. And I won't lose sleep over how good the end product turns out. I just need to start drawing and being creative again. And when I worry it doesn't look good enough, I check out the original Penny Arcade strips, and then look at the stuff now. The comics didn't look that great when they started, but they kept at it, and now look at the quality of the work.

Here's their site. They have an archive of their comics, and you can check out their first comics and their latest as well:

http://www.penny-arcade.com/

Anyway, wish me the best!

Most DEFINITELY!!!!

I'm actually forming some ideas in my head, but I'm tempted to go with it, rather than wait for the official "Creative Start" at noon.

Okay, here's the cover!

I cheated and spent 10 extra minutes. I'll need to spend only 45 minutes tomorrow:(

And here's the rough sketch:

You can tell I was running out of time on the last panel.

Will be making page 2 today. Not sure how I'm going to pace what I have in mind though:(

Once again the trend continues that the quality shoots downward towards the last panels as I get rushed:(

The time limit keeps things interesting. It prevents things from getting too "planny" and makes everything more or less spontaneous -which can help improve one's overall work a lot I think.

Keep up the great work TM. Good stuff. :D

Thank you muchly:)

I was sick yesterday, but I still sketched the next two pages, knowing I couldn't ink in bed. So I inked the two pages today, and I'm not very happy with most of it, but I won't give up. It'll come. I mainly don't like how the darker shadows turned out. I'm still learning I guess:)

I'm much happier with how this page turned out, although, as usual, I always wish I could ahve done a little more. And once again, I spent a little more time on it than I was supposed to (about 10 minutes too long).

I think your work is great, especially considering the time constraint.
It's a brilliant excerise for any artistic endeavor. It's like free verse for a writer.
looks like a fun little story.
I think I may try something similar.
It will probably help greatly with discipline and time management.

Thanks! All the feedback really means a lot, and I know that you guys tend to be honest here.

I can't describe how helpful this exercise has been, for all the reasons you already mentioned. And please DO try it! I'd LOVE to see what someone else would come up with doing this.

You're doing great. I look forward to coming to Never and seeing that your work has progressed. I love it that the hero has ended up back in the lake.
As for trying something similar. Well if you hit the link in my signature then it'll take you to a comic I did 18 years ago much in the same vain. I totally made it up as I went along. It took about 3 days though, but it is coloured.:D

Story is great so far. Flows very well. Page 11/12 are my favorites so far. As well as the hero's decision to pick up all the weapons to fight the zombies.

I'm going on 15yrs of being in the army so I had to add this from an actual Sergeant view: I'd think he'd have some snot nose officer asking every five seconds over a radio "what are you doing now, sitrep! Whats your status sergeant!?"

Keep it up

Trusty Mutsi, checking this thread out is a daily must on my visits to this forum however I've just had a horrible thought... we are on page 24 so if this is a 30 hour comic book this means there is only 6 pages left!!!

What am I gonna do after that??? I hope we will see the further adventures of Sergeant USA!!!

I was recently asked where he had the grappling gun hidden. Heh...

Yes, there are only 6 pages left (now 5) and I've had a horrible though as well: I'm not sure how I'm going to fit my ending in those remaining pages. I think I underestimated how many pages my finale would need.

I'm flattered that you're enjoying my comic so much:) I might continue the Sergeant, as he has created quite the following, but I also have a few other stories I want to tell as well. Plus I'd like to go back and make the art better in the current comic.

Ummm... not sure what you mean:( I don't read much Authority.

Authority is a more realistic look at superheroes. They kill for a start. Apollo is a bit like Superman. There was this one story in which they fought, what was basically the Avengers. Apollo got rid of the giant Man type character by flying straight through his head, killing him instantly. So that's what I meant.
