Is it me or is DC missing the point? While semi-anime I tend to think "perv" looking at these designs. Thoughts?
Isn't most anime "perv?" Why should this be any different?

Missing the point of what? That there are scads of undersexed comics and/or anime fans that pay good money for tarted up "action figures"?

You know its odd that we chastize anime fans for liking those sexy big eyed girls they love, but in all honesty western comics arent innocent for pumping up females to be super sexy closet nymphos. I mean, no anime female I can think of todate constantly wears less clothes than wonder woman. Even the ones that were fully bodysuits leave very little to the imagination.

Most anime isn't 'perv.
People just get that impression from...well, stuff like this.
I don't buy action figures but I don't think less of guys that do. That is, unless you're buying figures like these. Come on, Brother, if you're buying little half-clothed big-busted sex-kittens then maybe it's time to put that extra hobby money into a gym membership, a new suit and a haircut.

Yes. I have no idea where DC got this idea of anime figures being pervy from.
Oh wait. Let's look at some popular anime figures.

And you know, that's just the tip of the damn iceberg.
Hell, I didn't even get itno the lolicon figures. Or the officially liscenced Gainax fully nude and bent over Rei figures. Or the XXX bondage gashapon (capsule figures).
C'mon. Japan dominates the 'perv' figure market.

Exactly what was so bad about them, compared to the original comic versions?
Batwoman/girl (whichever) looked pretty damn cool, Power Girl was almost spot on, and I think Supergirl actually wears that outfit, or something very much like it.

Now that i've actually had a chance to see the images. It's obvious where some of the complaints are coming from. However I'd like to point out that the Powergirl linked on that site is actually wearing more clothes than the original Powergirl, though in all seriousness the original Powergirl is better looking, that one just looks creepy, even its magic window isn't very appealing.
Also the Barbara Gordon Batgirl they have displayed looks like 10 types of awesome. She ain't naked and you can't complain about the fit of her outfit sinces its just typical fanfare in the sense that superheroes must have skin-tight body suits.
The Supergirl I can lean towards the slightly obsense with. I mean the skirt is the only real problem here. Current Kara's skirt is only slightly less ridiculous but we accept it because well mini skirts are supposed to be mini. It comes over her butt for a skirt that is so small, so infact Kara has a small booty, lol! But seriously the anime one's skirt (if you can even call it that) is just wrong in every sense of the word, but it is very stylish and unique, definitely a superheroine type of motif to it. Infact im sure i've seen a similar skirt like that somewhere else in fiction though the name of it escapes me now.
The Catwoman figure im not to sure about either, it looks like a swimsuit that has the addition of some kind of mini skirt/shorts looking thing, in either case shes still covered so its not bad but it doesnt keep with the traditional catwoman concept of being completely covered.

Firstly lets get the point across. That what alot of you are talking about in terms of sex appeal is designed and aimed at a specific demographic, anime as a whole is not about sex appeal. The majority of anime (and by god I hope you're all not the sick twisted anals of society that see otherwise.) looks nothing like the links posted above. If a character is designed to be sexy then that is made obvious just like how in our western comics. Do you really wanna talk about sex in western comics? Have you ever seen Lady Death? http://www.diamondcomics.com/toychest/toys/images/ladydeath_12in.jpg
Maybe, people are confused by the overabundance of sex appeal in anime because thats all the anime they intentionally look for. Yes alot of high glossy animes have sexually attractive characters because thats what the genre of anime is catering to. Think about the most popular animes of our time, has there been a over abundance sex appeal outside of the shows original intent? No. Im not talking about doujins or hentai related material either.
Look at some the best selling animes/mangas of all time. Sailor Moon, by the original artist handy work the characters are not overly sexy, infact the distinctions between the male and female characters are barely noticable, no ridiculous boob sizes, no panty wedgies, no stupid 10% of my body is covered while the rest of me is exposed. Dragon Ball - DBGT? HA wish you could show me a character in that entire series that was supposed to get me hot and bothered. Ranma 1/2? By the original artist handy work i am sorry to say NO BOY! It was largely comical in its appearance as well as in its written form. What alot of people just happen to be introduced to in alot of these examples is redone or commecially sexized minorities of a genre or artform (as i like to think of it.) that is largely meant for a young audience.
I don't see what the comic fans here are getting worked up about; the final word in both mediums is that SEX SELLS. WW, Powergirl and to an extent TT Raven all have body-hugging suits, the suits in the links above change the original property along the same theme as the ones the characters usually wear.
In several cases, the redesign actually looks better than what's drawn. Case in point, Powergiel DOES have more clothes than her comic counterpart, and Supergirl may be cute but at least she isn't bursting out of a tanktop.
Its just another take on existing characters, ENJOY IT.

The figurines themselves are pretty crappy and not really anything more "pervy" than we've seen these (or other) characters in before. It's not really fair judgement for the equivalent of a snapshot, we're not getting an anime or a propaganda campaign where we seem them dressed like this all of the time, so just call it a bad piece of art and move on. Personally I like the Batgirl and Powergirl designs with the latter design being vaguely similar to something from Mai Otome. There are just these little additions that I think make this particular costume, though the kneeless boots I could do without. Oh, and Batgirl needs to lose the helmet and get something else.
I've never found Catwoman very attractive, so this is just another instance of that. It's just not a very interesting design, seems more reliant on "sex appeal" than the others.
Supergirl is pretty... yeah, but, in relation to the current comics, Supergirl's clothes don't make me think less of her more so than Supergirl's actually personality, but all things considered I think "this" design is a little bit too minimized (plus I just don't like the way the skirt looks) and the gloves... no thanks, though I can see how it might appeal to others.

Actually for these to be accurately in anime figure style, you have to clearly be able to see their panties. Possibly being able to remove their skirts.
Anyone who's seen the animes or mangas for Genshiken or Welcome to the NHK knows what I'm talking about.
Ah... moe.

DC Direct's Fan Service Figures
Anime-Esque Versions of Comic Heroines
February 13, 2007
DC Direct has unveiled anime-style action figures of Supergirl, Catwoman, Batgirl and Power Girl at the New York International Toy Fair. The well-endowed, scantily-clad figures are clearly targeted at the fanboy audience and they don't skimp on the American version of "fan service," which is only accentuated by the "big eyes, small mouth" anime-like facial figures.
DC Direct's attempt to create something akin to the sexy anime/manga figures so common in Japan has already stirred up some controversy and is likely to run further afoul of the puritanical streak in the American character. It should be interesting to see how far down the "fan service" road DC Direct or other American companies will go -- how long will it take before there is an American superheroine action figure with squeeze-able silicon breasts or panty-shot purveying mirrored bases.

As I half joked in another forum when someone else asked, "how far a US company will go down the Fan Service road"?
The answer is not far enough! We need Supergirl bending over for a panty shot or Poison Ivy with Batgirl in vine bondage. C'mon. These are nothing compared to some of the Japanese figures out there.

A friend just sent me a pic from Welcome to the NHK that sums up the Japanese figure market perfectly. (Though the manga is much better and goes waaaay father than the watered downTV show.)

the only part i find creepy, is that the "Sexy" anime characters look like little girls with funny shaped heads.
in the more naturalistic western style, halfnaked chicks don't freak me out.
sex in advertising=ok
pedophilia in advertisin=not
there's good and bad out there, but in america, we get sent a couple good things, and then whatever random manga with the dumbest plot and creepiest women characters in skimpy outfits having intercourse with machines book that's out there.
oh, and how exactly is batgirls zipper practical? the top half of her outift must be some kinda liftable mold or something... it seems like a veeeery difficult outfit to get into. not something to put on in a phone booth.

Batgirl and Catwoman look nice.
Supergirl and Powergirl... less so.

Meh, I just see this as sexing it up of a different sort.
It is actually. It can also be seen as a way to draw manga fans into the more traditional mediums of comics, which is a good thing for everyone; it's a total waste to stick only to manga and vice versa.
