View Full Version : Absolute edition of The Golden Age?

Thinking about this the other day and if something as crappy as The Long Halloween can get the Absolute treatment, then why not something as stupidtasically cool as The Golden Age mini-series?
It'd be a nice alternate history bookend to Absolute New Frontier.

I would probably buy this, yes. It's one of my all-time favorite stories. I have re-read this countless times.
Paul Smith's artwork here is so deserving of the Absolute treatment.

Hahahaha.
Please someone enlighten me about this "Golden Age". Is it a novel, or the whole Golden Age period itsel; perhaps something else?
I own 3 absolute editions (Kingdom Come, The New Frontier and Dark Knight), and I have been pleased with them all.

It's a 4-issue limited series from 1993, written by James Robinson and drawn by Paul Smith. It's an Elseworlds book that takes place shortly after the end of World War II and it involves just about everyone from the All-Star Squadron. And it's awesome. You should be able to find the trade paperback quite easily, and I highly recommend picking it up.

THE GOLDEN AGE is one of the best mini-series of all-time. I think it's much better than anything else that's been Absoluted so far, except for WATCHMEN and maybe SANDMAN. However, I don't know if it's commercial enough to get an Absolute edition.

What a funny coincidence because I just read the trade for the first time.
What an incredible experience this was, the way every thing just builds to the climax is perfect and the climax itself is just....wow.
I've re-read those final pages at least 5 times since friday (when I bought it), I'd totally buy an absolute.

I think the problem with a Golden Age Absolute Edition would be its size. Granted they're prestige format, but it's only 4 issues. I realize that the JLA/Avengers mini was also only 4 issues and it still got the Absolute treatment (even if it's not officially an Absolute, it's close enough), but it had enough of a backstory and history to warrant a companion book. I think if there were a backstory like that for Golden Age, we would have heard about it by now.

Kingdom Come was only four-issues I believe.

Long Halloween, crappy? Are you kidding me? It was a hell of a lot better than half of the "mystery" Batman stories being told right now.

The Long Halloween isn't that great, but the art is absolutely fantastic and I've always assumed that that was wat these absolute editions are really about

Kingdom Come was only four-issues I believe.
And it also had tons and tons of extras, almost all of which was already out there in some form or other, I believe.
Now, I'd love a lengthy interview with Robinson about how the story came about, details on it being an in continuity story vs. an Elseworlds, how he folded some of the ideas into Starman, if he had any notes for a sequel, etc. Did Smith keep a sketchbook? Really, other than Dan the Dyna-Mite turning into the new "hero," were there any character redesigns? I don't think so, and I don't know about you, but that's the only reason I even look at sketchbook inclusions: to see to process of how the artist came up with new characters or character designs.
An Absolute Edition of this book would have to have TONS of extra material to justify the size, and unless it's being hoarded away somewhere for just an occasion, I don't think we'll see it.

I'm not saying it's the definition of a Batman book, I just think that "crappy" is too underwhelming. For the writing, or Sale's art.

I would buy two coyies and then take one bury in a time capsule so the people of tommorow would have access to the best mini series to ever happen.
The big throw down at the end is like on my personal top 5 asskicking moments in history.

id rather Robinson followed up with " the Silver Age" he said he had a plot but he wanted to do it with Chaykin , who wasnt doing much comic stuff back then. but is now wasting his time with frikin blade. then they could put both books in the absolute slip case and every one would be happy

Any idea what the plot was? Never realized Robinson had a sequel planned.

Speaking as someone who loved THE GOLDEN AGE and was underwhelmed by THE NEW FRONTIER, I've got to say I'm quite bummed about that.
Though considering the work Chaykin is doing these days, maybe it's a blessing in disguise.

New Frontier is pretty much the unofficial sequel to Golden Age.
Loved both stories.

I wouldn't go quite that far. New Frontier was okay, but I didn't get the love - although people do seem to go crazy whenever anything is nostalgic.

The one thing about New Frontier that annoys me is that they can collect Superman Our Worlds at War, Long Halloween and Dark Victory as well as Crisis in one full trade paperback, but it takes two to hold the complete New Frontier story?
Do DC think I came down with the last shower?
Although I will say that the Absolute Edition is very enticing as the Crisis one wa superb. All I need now is the cash.

That's why things are given the "Absolute treatment." They have more things to offer than just a collection of the original story. You can get the New Frontier trade and just get the original story, but the Absolute edition gives you the dozen or whatever extra pages, sketches, scripts, author's notes, etc.
If Golden Age had all of that to offer, I could see an Absolute edition of it.

DanYeah. It wasn't that I hated something great, it was that I was ambivalent about something that was mediocre.
NEW FRONTIER just does not deserve to be held in the same regard as THE GOLDEN AGE. THE GOLDEN AGE managed to juggle dozens of character arcs that dovetailed at the end and came to satisfying conclusions, and featured a series of conflicts and villains that perfectly encapsulated the era.
The first three issues of NEW FRONTIER were phenomenal, but the story just fell apart in the second half, as the dozens of character arcs introduced never really went anywhere. And Cooke never elevated the material past pastiche.
In Cooke's defense, it is a lot easier to write a dramatic story about the end of an era than the start of one, though.

IIRC, it got reprinted not too long ago, under a "JSA" banner. But the DC description (http://dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=1344) says it's out of print. Hmm.
