View Full Version : What monthly DC books should I be buying?

I mean, I am a Batman and Teen Titans faithful, but other than that I'm not reading a whole lot of DC these days.

I love noir-esque stuff, team books, and clever dialogue. Decent action scenes don't hurt either, as long as the story doesn't suffer because of it. So other than 52, what other on-going monthly books are must-haves right now?

Book and issue # to hop on? (no one-shots please!)

Thanks for any advice.

For me, without a doubt DC's 2 best books are Justice Society and Green Lantern. Teen Titans being up there too, but it seems you are already a fan ;)

Uh, every DC book? hahaha

I was thinking of picking up Robin or Nightwing since I'm a big fan of the Bat-Family... But Green Lantern sounds pretty good, too. Maybe I'll do some JLA and/or JSA while I'm at it.

But can anyone tell me what issue I should hope on for these series?? (Nothing past ten issues past or anything... I don't want to go poor buying back issues. Yikes.)

Both JLoA and JSoA restarted not too long ago, so back issues shouldn't be hard to find. So far JLoA has done #0-5, and JSoA has just #1 & 2 out.

I recommend The Atom if you're looking for a fun, younger hero book with plenty of action and clever dialogue. Blue Beetle has been a lot of fun, too. And they're both new characters that aren't very far into their new series, so they're easy books to get into. You can pick up all eight issues of The Atom pretty easily, but Blue Beetle is coming up on twelve issues in- issue twelve being the beginning of the next big arc (or eleven, can't remember).

EDIT: Whoops. Didn't see your pull list in your signature, there. Well, if you like Blue Beetle, I have no doubt you'll enjoy The Atom.

The more people suggest it, the more I definitely think I'm gonna start pulling JSA and JLA.

As far as Nightwing and Green Lantern, can anyone tell me what issue #s to hop on?

Read The Spirit. Only two issues are out so far and next issue is the Spirit's origin. There was a Batman/The Spirit one shot put out in December too.

And it's noir with clever dialogue.

Edit: Green Lantern Corps and Checkmate are solid enough team books that may not show up on your radar. Both tend to be dark, although not super clever.

If you're willing to leave the DCU proper, try Stormwatch PHD over at Wildstorm. Only 3 issues so far.

Nightwing #129 just came out, last week? Or the week before. Its as good a place as any, its the debut of the new artist, Jamal Igle, former Firestorm artist. The series is ok, good but not great. I read it cause I love the character.

Green Lantern, if you want to do some back issue hunting, started the OYL jump at issue #10, so obviously that be a good place to start. Its only up to 16 issues so far due to some delays, so you'd have to snag about 6 issues. #17 is slated to come out at the end of this month.

Justice Society is on #2, number 3 coming out soon....buy it! ;)

From someone who is in the same position as you (previously have a rather small monthly buy list, but looking to expand) I too must recommend JSA. I had never read any JSA prior to this current re-start, and it is looking like some great great stuff, or JLA is really good too ( i personally liked issue #0's recap of previous series). I have also been getting into the batman and superman confidential series. Superman confidential is drawing in some excellent emotional moments of the early years of superman, and batman confidential is doing some great work with the development of bruce wayne's collection of "wonderful toys".
all of these are only up to issue 3 or so.

DC eh?

... How about Spirit, Shazam: Monster Society of Evil, and uh... would you dig some Vertigo or Wildstorm? Because I'm not really buying much else.

Is Shazam: Monster Society of Evil actually good? I mean, I was interested because I love the character. I just wasn't sure if he could have a good stand-alone comic himself.

It depends. Why do you love the character? Do you like Captain Marvel because he's another Superman, but magic, or do you like him because he's just a kid who can call on gods to become "Earth's Mightiest Mortal?" Smith's Monster Society of Evil is great because it gets back to Captain Marvel's roots.

Buy Manhunter.
Oh, and Tales of the Unexpected. Not your standard spandex stories.

JSA, though the heavy ties to continuity might be difficult to follow. (Like a recent identity reveal...I had a /vague/ idea who it was, but everyone here was like ZOMG! That person! That person ROXXORS!)

Green Lantern Corps would be another one. It's not very far along either, but the stories are kind of hit and miss. The current arc is the best the series as been so far, imho.

And Superman Confidential if you don't mind a solo character book.

I definitely like him because everything about him is unique; dare I say, one of the most unique orgins DC has. That, and the fact that he's a character that is a huge deal when he gets thrown into a DC book, but no one seemed to be able to handle him solo-wise. Since I hear Smith is doing a good job, I'm gonna look into it.

I can only recommend Green Lantern, Justice League Of America, and Justice they are by far the best books DC is putting out IMO.

JSA is easily my favourite book on the market. I can't recommend it enough. And only 2 issues so far, so it's easy to jump on board.

Atom is a great read, a classic superhero book complete with cool young hero and a great supporting cast. If you like Bllue Bettle, you should enjoy this series.

Birds of Prey is another great team books. Issue #100 is a great jumping on point for the series as it establishes a new team line-up and dynamic. it also features 2 members of the Batman family, Oracle and Huntress.

Green Lantern is another top book, and has really hit it's stride since the OYL jump.

Just dropped Checkmate & Nightwing. Didn't maintain my interest. Book I've been loving is Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis. Fantasy stuff, but really solid writing. New writer coming aboard (no pun intended) next issue I think.

Didn't want to like JSA but do. Same with Green Lantern. The spin-off Green Lantern Corps has been solid too.

Also if you like noir, Paul Dini's Detective Comics has been terrific.

All-Star Superman (the consistently best DC book)
Checkmate
JLA
JSA (It's at the beginning of a run so you won't be TOO lost)
Ex Machina (I know, it's Vertigo, but still DC)
Fables

I'd say Detective Comics. And given that you specified "noir-esque", I'd suggest giving Catwoman a try.

Holy cow, thanks for suggesting JSA guys. Just picked up the first couple of issues today and I freakin' love it.

Also picked up some Green Lantern and Nightwing and I gotta say those are some fun books, too.
