Yes, I hate the source of this news as well, (right-wing propoganda site) but I saw it on Wikipedia and followed the link in the citation.
If true, 2008 just got a whole lot stupider...and bigoted.
Remember that this is the fine gentleman that thinks women shouldn't be allowed to vote, that the Army should build a wall around L.A. and go after immigrants and got fired from MSNBC for telling a gay caller to "get AIDS and die".
And for transparency's sake. The guy's real name? Michael Weiner.

Michael Savage Mulls Presidential Run
Phil Brennan
Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007
Michael Savage, the nation's third-most listened to radio talk-show host, says he may leave his top rated show to make a bid for the GOP nomination for president.
"I know it sounds bizarre but when you consider the people running for the presidency, none . . . seems to be qualified," Savage told NewsMax in an exclusive interview.
Savage, based at the San Francisco Bay area's KNEW station, began his syndicated "Savage Nation" show in 2000. Today his network, Talk Radio Network, boasts that Savage is heard on over 370 stations across the country by 8 million listeners a week.
The controversial radio host packs a powerful punch in his three-hour daily show and can spark national news. Savage was credited with bringing the Dubai Ports World deal to national attention. The deal would have turned over U.S. port operations to the Middle Eastern company. A public outrage ensued, forcing Dubai Ports World to scuttle their plan.
Savage has also parlayed his loyal base into four consecutive New York Times best sellers, including his latest "The Political Zoo" — a satirical criticism of both Republicans and Democrats.
Savage, with his loyal listenership, says he can play an important role in the Republican primaries, gain critical support, and add to the planned debates.
"I would think that somebody who's not a politician might be a viable candidate," Savage stated, stressing that he would focus his campaign on his mantra: "Borders, language, Culture."
Savage readily admits he has little chance of being elected.
Still, he's convinced he could help push the Republican Party back to its conservative roots.
"A non-politician who has a very large following, who is very conservative, and who believes in a simple message of borders, language, and culture has a great chance of electrifying the American people," Savage said, complaining the current flock of candidates are simply parroting "sound bytes."
Could such a run harm the Republican Party?

Maybe he'll make such a jackass out of himself, that people will be shocked out of bigoted viewpoints.

If he gets elected, we are sending in the UN.
Headed by Iraq and Afghanistan.

There is one up-side to a Savage candidacy that just struck me. If he debates other candidates on television and says something truly bigoted in their presense, they might be forced to repediate him publically.
Most of the time, they can pretend he doesn't exist and let him propogandize on their behalf. But with him standing right next to them, they might feel prompted to distance themselves from him.

What got Savage fired from MSNBC:
"Oh, so you're one of those sodomites. You should only get AIDS and die, you pig, how's that? Why don't you see if you can sue me, you pig. You got nothing better to do than to put me down, you piece of garbage, you got nothing better to do today, go eat a sausage and choke on it. Get trichinosis. Now do we have another nice caller here who's busy because he didn't have a nice night in the bathhouse who's angry at me today? Put another, put another sodomite on....no more calls? I don't care about these bums, they mean nothing to me. They're all sausages."

Meh. He mentions sausage a lot. I like sausage.
Which is as much thought as the average person puts into voting.

Since there's no law that prevents complete cunts from running for president, we'll at least get to laugh if he tries, because his candidacy will go down in flames.
What are the chances he will even get into the debates?
Kuchinich is an actual government official, and they barely let him talk.

But Kucinich was allowed in all of the televised debates, even when it was down to four candidates. Hell, they let Pat Robertson and Alan Keyes debate, so why not?
They would likely allow Savage to debate if he ran a serious enough campaign and raised enough money. He's too well known in the media to not allow in.
You have to be fringe on the level of LaRouche to not be allowed to debate in the major party primaries.

He's on enough stations that people know who he is. They've let real nutballs in before. Gary Bauer...Pat Robertson...
If he raises enough money and he's prominent enough, he'll be allowed in, even if no one takes him seriously.
ballsack!
And we come full circle back to Savage.
Who i only know exsists because of JustinD.
Which proves why he doesn't have a shot of running, because most people don't know who he is, and he has no way of getting people to know.
And to further address the issue, who says sodomites anymore?
I don't even think falwell says it.

If they let him in it throws off my entire scenario, because the nutballs will have a nutball to focus on.
I can't let that happen, so i must kill mr. Savage.
Or Mr. Weiner.

Within the primaries, they don't fight the inclusion of candidates like Savage because even the most conservative candidates like Brownback will look moderate by comparison if Savage is allowed to debate them.
People like Keyes, Robertson and Bauer are a pretty effective shield with their cartoonish far-right schtick to cover their slightly more understated far-right schtick.

Mr. Weiner told a homosexual to eat a sausage. Nobody needs to call him a sodomite, he is obviously a very deeply repressed one.
I think that even though he doesn't have a chance of winning, just by being there, even if he's treated as a freak, he automatically makes all the other hard-right-wing candidates look just that little bit more reasonable in comparison.

I agree, how how Bush could hide behind Bauer and Keyes in 2000. Savage's a mixed blessing to them. On one hand, they look more reasonable. On the other, he normally propagandizes for them and his fans (most of whom vote Republican) will be watching and if he gets really nasty in their presense, they might feel pressured to distance themselves from him or blast what he's saying.
The guy says some really racist and bigoted things, and like with Rush and Coulter, when the GOP isn't around to hear it, they can pretend they don't know him, never heard it and have no connection to him. He says it standing next to him on TV and they'll have to respond. Hopefully to denounce him, with his fans watching.
It will be interested to see this play out.

The difference is that Schwarzenegger has since amply demonstrated that he's a flexible opportunist first and foremost, and a conservative a distant second. Clearly this is not the case with Savage.

I don't quite get how they are political issues.
(I'm not saying that to make a point either, if someone can it explain it to me)
Could such a run harm the Republican Party?
Only if he got through probably.
I mean if they shoot him down in pre-selection, or whatever you chaps call it, they might win support from swing voters for showing they aren't complete despots.

Not really, conservative believe in small government and balanced budgets and believe that any proposed changes to the economic or social status quo need to be carefully examined.
The Republican Party stopped being conservative a long time ago.
Mind you, Savage doesn't mean "conservative" he means "reactionary", assuming he has any idea what he means.

Mike and others will be able to provide more specifics on this, but one challenge or unexpected consequence or something is that a heck of a lot of African-Americans and Hispanics and so forth tend themselves to be religious and conservative. And when it comes down to social morality vs social and economic justice, they frequently go with the morality. Even with it being against their own self-interest in so many ways.

How can he say he's getting back to conservative ways (ie small government) if he's running on the platform of controlling the language/culture - two things that history showed tend to change/form on their own?

France has an official authority on the French language. It has no legal power, but it tries to prevent the aglicisation of French. It's called L'Académie française (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acad%C3%A9mie_fran%C3%A7aise).
What Savage & his ilk want to do, as I understand it, is pretty much just fear-mongering.
When modern American conseratives talk about small government, they usually mean they want to reduce or eliminate regulatory agencies and to reduce or eliminate social spending.
They're usually quite happy with military spending and corporate welfare, however.
