Bit of a dull title hmm? Well, it's snowing outside and I think the weather is dulling my senses.
Anyway, I thought you might like to see this, a preview of the cover to the Tripwire Annual that should be available by August, comics articles galore on Hellboy, Frank Miller and, oh, lotsa stuff. Look out for it in Previews. That's it for now!

Very nice Duncan! I was not familiar with your work as a painter, great sense of mass to every ounce of his worn face.

Very, very nice cover Duncan! You're inching your way towards becoming THE definitive non-Mignola Hellboy artist. :)

Thanks!
A bit more info. Tripwire is indeed a magazine, it started out 10 years back as a fanzine and ended as a colour monthly with some US distribution. A mix of articles, interviews and reviews on comics, music and film it featured several interviews and preview art on one Mike Mignola who some of you may have heard of! You can read the editors Blog here-
http://joelm1-joelmead.blogspot.com/
If you look back you'll also find reference to a book in the works that features a fantastic list of creators including Mike... and somehow I got in there too!
Anyway, another cover mock up for you-

I can see them just fine. Thanks, Duncan. It's a great painting. :)
To those who can't see the images: they are photobucket images. If you are viewing from a workplace, they may be blocked. As well, photobucket limits bandwidth and when bandwidth is exceeded, they will be invisible for a while.
An alternative would be to post them as attachments.

Cool painting. Kind of a switch to have a front face view, whereas Mike (or so it seems) tends to go for the side or profile view..

I wouldn't ordinarily do a straight on shot like this, certainly you won't see one in Darkness Calls without good call as HB definitely looks better from a 3/4 view... the reason here was that Joel (editor of Tripwire) had mocked up the anual cover with a painting I did for the third issue of Girl (Vertigo, a lifetime ago) and I thought it a nice call back- you can see it further back in Joel's blog that I mentioned earlier. Also, for trivia fans, in my sketch that appeared in the trade for The Iron Coffin I drew HB chilling out with the latest issue of Hell Girl, Girl being the comic I was drawing at that time... note the cover design!

Hey Duncan, has there been any photoshop manipulation of the painting itself? I'm seeing what appears to be a slight blurring effect in sections of the painting, and I'm wondering how much of that was done manually (meaning on the painting directly) and how much may have been manipulated "in post".

No photoshop, It is a fairly small painting (9x13"), I think the softness is down to the size of the file, it is pretty lo-rez. The only post treatment is a slight bump in levels, thats it!

Anyone who hasn't read Girl really ought to track it down. It's at least as good as Kill Your Boyfriend, the obvious comparison.
Duncan, a while ago you posted (on The Engine, maybe?) that you and Milligan had talked about putting a Girl collection out at Image or somewhere, like Delano has been doing. Is there any news on that front?

Joel Meadows, TRIPWIRE editor here…
Duncan has been kind enough to put the cover to the TRIPWIRE Annual up but it's gone through another design change, so here is the latest version of it…
By the way, it will be advance solicited in May's Previews for shipping in August. Cover price will be £9.95 UK/ $14.95 US for 128 pages, squarebound, full colour, US comic book format.

Joel, are any of the back issues of Tripwire featuring Mignola/Hellboy content still available via mail order?

I'd have to check. The Hellboy issues sold very well so I don't know how many copies I have left…
