View Full Version : What DC comic are you most ashamed of liking?

We all have one. That comic all logic and taste tell us we shouldn't enjoy....but we do, damn it.

For me, it's Joe Kelly's Supergirl, which has been a creative trainwreck since Jeph Loeb reintroduced the character. But, once Kelly took over and ditched the last vestiges of Greg Rucka's aborted takeover, I actually started digging it. Dunno why. I've never cared for Kelly's writing, but there's something about his Supergirl, who is far from heroic, or even likeable, character, that I'm finding facsinating.

To be fair, if I actually had to pay for Supergirl instead of shamelessly reading my buddy's copy, I seriously doubt I'd continue reading this comic. But, everytime a new issue of Supergirl comes out, I find myself reading the damn thing and...to my shame....enjoying it.

There, I said it.

Don't look at me like that. I bet you liked Youngblood you hypocrites!

Oh, screw you guys, I'm going home!

Same as you. For some reason, I actually enjoy Supergirl. Don't know why, but Kelly always interests me, no matter how terrible the story is. And I like the art, I'm probably one of the few, but I do enjoy the art.

But unfortunately, I actually do pay for the book.

All-Star Batman....when it actually came out.

Now that it's cancelled I would put Wonder Woman up there. Still waiting for this book to impress...that is....when it actually comes out.

I generally despised Joe Kelly's DC writing and I never cared less about Supergirl--but I must agree. I am thoroughly enjoying his run on the title. He's actually made Supergirl an extremely relatable character to me. And yes, sometimes I feel guilty defending it because of the title the reputation has--but I truly think Kelly's run has been excellent.

My "guilty pleasure" comic used to be the Loeb Superman/Batman. Yes from a writing standpoint, I'll agree with people who thought it was totally awful--yet it was probably in my Top 10 at the time. Somehow, I was able to look at the campy dialogue, fan-fictionesque plots, and poor storytelling and was still able to enjoy it for what it was.

Yes, his original run on Exiles was pretty good. Granted, Exiles has to be one of the easiest comics to write of all time. Even Chuck Austen wrote a few okay issues of Exiles. But Winnick's initial run on Exiles was good enough to give that title momentum to last 90 issues so far, with no end in sight.

I just now got back into Supergirl after taking several months off. I'm all for character development, but she really wasn't fleshed out at all past the Kandor arc, the point that she can't fit in was just constantly reiterated. Now that they're actually moving her story along, revealing what exactly Zor-El did to her, sliding her into superheroics, I'm getting back onboard. I'm not ashamed to like it since, right now, I don't know if I really like it, I just wanna' see where it's goin'.

I guess... if I had to say I as even kind of ashamed of liking a book (which I'm not, really, but I often question why I like it so much), it'd be Shadowpact. Willingham's usually an excellent writer, but he's really slogging away at that book, and I think the only reason I really read it is because of the cast. I love Detective Chimp, I missed Enchantress and Nightshade from their time in the Suicide Squad, I haven't seen anything from Blue Devil in forever so I'm glad he's back, and I always found Ragman really interesting but barely anyone used him. I like the cast, the book's alright, but not really all that great. I'm supporting it because I believe that it could get a lot better once it finds it footing.

Oh! Actually, I am ashamed of liking at least one issue of a book. The last issue of The Flash was actually pretty fun, and I really enjoyed seeing Bart get out of his mopey hero funk and fight an actual rival like his "brother" Inertia. Too bad it took them five crappy issues to get to the one good one.

Because as much as i like them, the most ridicule and funny characters belong to marvel: a green giant? the furry beast? the spider-man? the green goblin? the demo-goblin? the chicken kid from the new x-men? the hob-goblin? the punisher (a pro killer with white gloves and boots)?

Counterpoint: The Ten-Eyed Man. Rebus. Chunk. Gorilla Grodd. Toyman. (I could be here all day.)

Though I'm not ashamed of liking the current SuperGirl comics but I'm embarrassed in liking the Teen Titans Go! comics. Why? Well, I enjoy watching the cartoon version and I like the comic version just as much.

The way Supergirl is written remind me of an ex-girlfriend.
Guess why we broke up. :)

I'm not particularly ashamed (Don't really care enough to be ashamed), but the Wonder Woman run with Artemis is kind of embarrassing to read. They could have done some cool things with this Artemis-becoming-WW storyline, but instead, after Artemis became WW, she's fighting some of the cheesiest villains I've ever heard of.

I question how characters such as "The Chauvinist" and "The Exploiter" got past DC's editorial offices.

The Cheshire/Poison Ivy arc was OK, but could have been done a lot better....And you would have thought the issues with The Joker would be great, but they were total duds. Only good thing out of those issues was that Brian Bolland cover of Diana subjected to The Joker's laughing gas.

I'm not ashamed of anything I like. But I would admit there are some books, like Supergirl and Green Arrow, that I buy because I like the characters, even though the writing is incoherent (in the case of the former) or lackluster (the latter). Green Arrow tends to more consistently give me buyer's remorse.

I'm not sure if this counts, but I'm lovin' the Friday the 13th series. It really plays like one of the movies, and plays around with the mythology of Crystal Lake and the camp.

My guilty pleasure would be reading the Bloodlines books. When they tried to introduce a bunch of new characters. I was a big fan of geist and I shudder to admit that I even kind of liked Loose Cannon. The color change thing was pretty funny. Overall a godawful notion that wasn't executed very well but for some reason, I kept picking it up.

Plenty of people, myself included, are guilty of this. The new Flash series was grueling at times, but I've always liked Bart, from Impulse to Kid Flash to The Flash, and I really wanted to read about him. Supergirl has been the only book that features a character I love that I've dropped for a while because I couldn't stand the writing anymore.

EDIT: Wait, that's not true. I also dropped Nightwing for the last few issues before The Wolf Man started writing.

Plop!

Although I heard a take on it recently, which put it in a better light, basically calling it absurdist horror, or something to that affect. I always got the most ridicule with that particular book, though.

Even so, it's a pretty mild embarrassment. If I were truly embarrassed, I'd have stopped reading comics in 2nd grade.

I know I read an article awhile back saying it was cancelled. I'd reference it if I could remember the source. Unless DC has recanted that statement I could have sworn I saw it somewhere(Newsarama, CBR, SBC, etc.).

I totally agree with these. I still buy the Flash even though it makes me physically ill at times. I'm really looking forward to the new writer. I cant think of any others at this moment, not DC anyway. I also really liked Infinite Crisis and that other company's big crossover, even-though at times people make it seem like comic book blasphemy.

Alright, I'll say it...

I love the new Blue Beetle comics.

I wish they'd get a new artist already.

Oh, and my second would be Winnicks Jason Todd arc in Batman. The one that started in the #630's-ish.

These'd definitely be my guilty pleasures of comics. hahaha

I agree with a lot of what people already said, ie. Winnick on Batman and the huge mega-events. For my own entry, I would say the new Justice League. I like that they were in the cave all those issues, it made the story seem, I don't know, more real, ie the lower tier members had to figure out what was going on, and in the end, the Big Three will come sweep up the mess and get the glory.
