I'm thinking about upgrading to a 19" monitor (not a cutting edge upgrade, I realize). I use my computer mainly for the web and word processing. I also use it to look at comic art.

Now, all that being said, which is the better choice for me: traditional or widescreen?

Widescreen is good if you watch DVDs on you computer or like to have multiple windows open side-by-side.

At 19 inches, 4:3 is probably best for most most things. Remember, at the same diagonal measurement, you get less height with a widescreen monitor. Since most web sites tend to be more vertically arranged and document editing is mostly vertical in nature, you get more on your screen with a standard arrangement.

If you're thinking of going widescreen, I'd suggest a 23 inch monitor. You get about the same height as the 19 inch screen, but a couple of extra inches on each side, and if you get one that rotates to portrait, it absolutely rocks for document editing. My wife uses a 24 inch monitor in portrait for most of her work at home.

Widescreen all the way.
