Picked up the first issue of the Dark Tower series and was surprised how much it went a long with the books. In fact I was pleased that it went that way, as I am a huge fan of the books myself.
However, I was under the impression that this seven issue series was going to mostly encompass untold backstories of the Gunslinger's history...is this false? Are they going to mostly go along with the books?
On a different note. I loved it. The art is fantastic and the writing that is used seems like it is straight out of the novels.
Any thoughts?

I was pretty disappointed, given that the story seemed very brief, and it also told a story that I've ALREADY READ A DOZEN TIMES. I wasn't too happy about it, or the announcement that we're getting a recap with the Big Coffin Hunters next issue.
These stories have tons of background to cover, which I realize, but they've also been read by millions of people already.

From what I understand from various online interviews, the first series will cover what happened in Wizard & Glass with a few new scenes thrown in here and there with the Crimson King. It's after the first series that they're going to get into the brand new material and cover everything up to the Battle of Jericho Hill.
I thought the first issue was pretty great. I'm glad PAD rather than King is writing. Sure millions of people have already read the story, but not in this graphic format. Complaining about it is like going to see the first Batman movie and complaining that you already know Batman's origin.

Well, as someone who only read book 1 years ago, I thought it was pretty great.
Seriously, one of the better reads I've had in a while and a great job from Marvel all round. Its obvious the delay from April 2006 was worth it. By now Lee should be done with issue 6, so it looks certain that it will come out monthly.
I heard from my LCS that King originally approached DC with this project. Any truth to that? If so, a real coup for Marvel.

art was amazing, and it does not bother me that it will cover wizard and glass for the first arc becuase that is my favorite out of the DT books. and the writing was the best i have seen in a long time IMO.

no idea if SK approached DC first about doing this comic...
I too loved the Wizard and Glass book.

How familiar do you have to be with the original trilogy to enjoy these?

It's actually a 7-book series, not a trilogy. You don't have to be familiar with that at all to enjoy this comic. This first series is adapted from one of the books, Wizard and Glass, and even that book could stand alone, apart from the series. It tells the history of the main character of the series, and while there are some ties into the rest of the story, it pretty much just introduces why he is searching for the Dark Tower, and shows why he is the way he is.
Just read it, and it killed all sorts of ass, can't wait for #2.
This comic RULED, can't wait for issue #2. I've been a big fan of the books for many years and this did them justice.
Whoops sorry for the double post..

I really enjoyed the book and I have never read any of The Dark Tower books. It is fairly easy to get into and it is a must read just for the art alone.

Same here, I really loved it.
What's great is that even if one hasn't read the books (which I didn't) there's some neat supplemental reading material after the story by Robin Furth which furthers the immersiveness of the world.
It's basically a very science fictiony, fantasy and magically mixed western. I'd like to see the gates as well since they would definitely make for an interesting visual. BTW as people have said before, Jae Lee and Richard Isanove perfectly show the atmosphere and the telling of the story beautifully.
Excellent start so far: 10/10

Damn fine comic. I love this tale, and I love the characters. I'm pleased that I'm actually seeing W and G (Wizards and Glass, not Will and Grace) in graphic form. And it is so beautiful. I've got the great big door poster of the cover, but I have no place in my house that I can place it. Anyway, excellent book, and I can't wait to see what the next series has in-store. The supplement in the back is worth my money. That was a great read. I can't wait to see what other back-up stuff will be thrown in. Also, I'm getting the Marvel Spotlight that just came out. It's an all Dark Tower issue if I'm not mistaken. And then, in April, I'll be getting the stand alone Dark Tower issue that goes into background info. I can't recall what it's called. Anyways, I'm so glad that you guys are having positive feedback. I hope that's average fanboy reaction, too.

Read this book a couple of days ago through a friend. Unfortunately I totally missed out on the novel version by Mr. Stephen King himself but after reading this I certainly want to read it now. Holy **** this kicked all kinds of ass. And the art wasn't half bad too. Dammit King you hooked me in and I want to be lured in more. Ande did I mention that the art was extremely good? Anyways I will most defintely be collecting this series
