This issue was decent with good art and writing, but a few problems with the plot so far. This first issue takes place during the Civil War and a confederate soldier who is severely wounded is saved by an ex slave that bought himself free. The issue shows the confederate soldier getting over his bigotted ways and becoming friends with the ex slave. While living with him the soldier has a vision that the land the ex slave lives on may not be holy.By the end of the issue the ex soldier states he repaid his debt and says he is going to Texas. Okay my main problem with this issue is Ghost Rider doesn't even appear in this issue so I don't know how this could be any type of prequel to the last mini. The issue was good, but didn't seem to have anything to do with Ghost Rider.

I picked it up today and noticed that while thumbing through it. I know every story needs a set-up but they should at least have the title character make an appearance. That is, afterall, the reason we're buying it.

It was okay as a set-up issue. It might have worked better as a #0 issue or something. But we live in the era of paced for trade - it'll work better in the collected edition, I'm sure.

Seriously, can you really not figure out what's going on here? One of two things: Caleb and family gets slaughtered, Travis becomes Spirit of Vengeance, or the alternate, Caleb becomes Spirit of Vengeance, because Ennis tricked you into thinking it was whitey. Which honestly wouldn't work well the way he set up the story, so I hope it is a. Not because we need random black character killed, but because why even set up Travis as a character, otherwise?

Seriously though, Did you really not see where this was going?

Wasnt there an article where they said this issue would be a prequel to the last mini? What does this have to remotely do with the last mini and why do we care about some civil war guy that gets turned into a ghost rider? This mini is supposed to be about Johnny Blaze I thought.

HAH! Totally glad I skipped this. Garth's last run on GR are some of the worst comics I have ever read.

Bunch of nobodys talking about nothing and no sign of Ghost Rider? Sounds like Ennis. I bought the last mini these jokers did, that's a mistake you make once.

Abandon this title while you still can, that's my advice.

It's a prequel in the sense that it came before. It was never billed as the start of Johnny Blaze. It's the story of a Spirit of Vengeance from the Old West. Which is what it was always billed as.

Err... you DO realize it was written by Ennis, right? His awful "Road to Damnation" mini featured nearly every clichée character we know from all his other books but hardly any Ghost Rider.

Yes. It plays with the "Ghost of Vengeance" mystery but they never said it would be about Blaze.

I liked it well enough, but it wasn't what I wanted. I'll thumb through the next issue before buying it, and probably won't if there's no GR.

Can't there be a rule or something keeping Garth Ennis away from Ghost Rider? I seriously don't think he understands the concept at all.

Yeah, but this is a different Ghost Rider. This is a superheroey version of the Saint of Killers. Which, for an 1870s version of Ghost Rider, works. And fits somewhat into GR continuity of there having been previous Spirits of Vengeance.

It would be an interesting twist if Caleb turns into the Ghost Rider, he's a good character and has alot more to lose.

For some reason I really enjoyed the book and it's setting. Lots of carnage (and even a Saving Private Ryan moment), genuinely interesting characters, and really good characterization/dialog.

I've been loving Clayton Crain's art lately since it looks more well textured and painted than computer generated like it did in the last Ghost Rider book. It's incredibly detailed yet beautiful and gritty where it needs to be. Both Caleb and Travis are cool guys and I'm wondering how this Ghost Rider will look (possibly in Civil War garb?).

I didn't mind it. I quite enjoyed the first mimi up untill the final issues. That was just stupid. I hope this one ends up being better. #1 was OK, I hopw #2 picks the game up.

I liked the book; it's a decent set-up for the story that's to come.

But then again, I liked Road to Damnation, so I'm automatically a loser on this forum.
