Fans discuss their campaign to save Marc Andreyko’s “Manhunter” from extinction, while writers Brian Bendis and Greg Rucka laud both Andreyko and book, and discuss what it takes to keep a little book alive.

“The sad truth is quality doesn't win out,” Rucka lamented. “Every now and then something worthy will survive. But the history of all art, the road is littered with the corpses of the titles that almost made it.”
Got that right, brother. Some of the best books are some of the worst-selling. Well, it's pretty cool seeing other creators urging DC to keep Manhunter around. Maybe they'll get the hint and start looking at why some of their other books that could be great aren't selling well either (like Blue Beetle and The Atom) and do something to collectively boost their sales.

MANHUNTER is an awesome title and should be keep alive as long as possible.
Andreyko's treatment of the mythos is both unique in its focus and respectful what went before. Everybody has already said everything about how awesome this book is and they are right.
I don't know why it hasn't caught, but that is a deficiency in the fans, not the work.
To hell with the cheerleader.
Save Manhunter.

I say just stick the character on birds of prey and cancel the book. I think the current story is a big let down and right now i'm finding what is happening to mark shaw and cameron chase more interesting than what is happening with the main character.

More than 22K, I think. The last issue was solicited as the final issue before those sales numbers were available.
There is always a chance the book could be relaunched, as DC did say if sales improved they'd continue it somehow after #30 - and they certain did improve.
So either (a) Kate will be a regular part of another series, or (b) they'll launch a new volume......or (c) we get #31 later this year...

Kate's already been showing up in Birds of Prey, since #100. Check it out.

I've given this book a few chances to hook me but I just don't see what makes people love this book so much that so much effort is being spent trying to save it. It's certainly not a bad book by any means, but it's certainly not so groundbreaking or so unique that it MUST be saved.
I mean, why didn't anything like this when Plastic Man was being cancelled? That book was giving readers something no other book at DC was doing--straight up goofy fun superhero comedy. Unless I'm mistaken, there's a few other books being published by DC featuring the exact same kind of stories and characters that I found in Manhunter.
Sorry, don't want to piss in anyone's pool here. If this is a book you really enjoy, do everything you can to save it. I just don't get why this book is inspiring such passion while a unique and fresh book like Plastic Man is canned without fanfare.
Sorry.

I think its because, even for most of the people who read and enjoyed Plastic Man (like me), most people couldnt tell what the hell was going on most of the time ;)

I've pulled the series since issue #8 . I hope it gets to stay. DC can always retract the cancellation if this final arc sells well.

Well, personally, after reading a trade and a few issues, I admit that the writing is good on the book. My problem is still from a concept standpoint, I don't want a hero who kills and subsequently I can't support such a book. Sorry.

The answer's obvious--Plastic Man readers didn't care. Maybe you should have lead the way!

There's a difference between a hero and a lead character.

I'm sort of torn about this. I think it's a great book with an interesting (albeit bitchy) main character and a great supporting cast. Its unfortunate, but it seems that the Manhunter title is never really going to take hold on its own. If that's the case, I'd incorporate the characters full-time into a team book with some staying power - Kate's already shown up in Birds of Prey, which is a logical fit for her. Another place where the Manhunter universe can fold in neatly is in the relaunched JSA - especially given the current arc about superhero legacies.

Because it's a mildly intresting take with really poor cliffhangers, that doesn't satisfy the want for either superhero action or gritty courtroom style drama.
By trying to be both, it takes the bite out of either.

I started reading it with one year later, and I love it. I have since purchased the first two trades, + I buy it month to month. I still need issues 18 up to one year later started.

Do you think DC will trade the remaining issues?

Here's hoping something good comes of this because Manhunter is a wonderfully executed series.

I've been buying two issues of Manhunter every month. I vehemently oppose cancelling the book and sticking her in someone else's title. There would be no way to transfer the things that matter, like her fantastic supporting cast. I don't want to see her watered down in for the sake of fitting into the DCU more easily.

Amen brother. I didn't even think it was funny, what I could make out of it.

They're at least having a Vol. 3 which collects #15-24 and given where that issue ends I'd say a 4th trade collecting the rest of the series is a good possibility.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v642/GabrielNYC/ComicImages/manhunter1.gifI'll pass on that one, thanks. The Goodwin/Simonson MANHUNTER was one of the best comic book stories of all-time, and it came to a rather nice conclusion; I'd rather not screw around with that by bringing Paul Kirk back.

Somewhere in the Valhalla graveyard where the heroes are buried in the DC universe, Paul Kirk and Dan Richards are laughing.
