i've been out of the loop on the whole marvel space storylines and what not. but weren't 90% of the kree population destroyed in Operation: Galactic Storm and all other kree territories taken by the Shi'ar. What happened, did they get ahold of a cosmic cube or something?

It was either 95 or 98% of the kree that were killed by the supreme intelligence in galactic storm. I remember I did the math a while ago and it was like 490 billion that were killed during that. I don't know big their empire was in the previous years but I think I remember there was some peace thing they had going with the shi'ar.
The Supreme Intelligence used the Cosmic Cube to evolve the Kree into Ruul. THe SI got the cube in Avengers Forever #1-12; the Ruul first made their appearance in Maximum Security #1-4. The Kree are responsible for manipulating the Shi'ar to turn Earth into a prison planet.

To expand on what DDM said, the Supreme Intelligence used a cosmic object (although it was the Forever Crystal, not a cosmic cube) to mess around with the Kree and mutate them into a species called the Ruul. As the Ruul, they took back their empire from the Shi'ar.
Later on, some cosmic shenanigans in Peter David's CAPTAIN MARVEL turned them back into Kree again.
Presumably, one of those plot devices brought them up to their current strength.

And yet no matter what the Skrulls did, their empire was still pretty much in shambles and their populations low compared to what they once were.
And now they're in even worse shape.

God that Ruul idea was HORRIBLE. How did they get devolved exactly?
I liked the Forever Crystal though.

Do you mean into their Ruul forms? They were actually evolved into them by the SI's use of the Forever Crystal.
Given that, as the "Ruul" they were shapeshifters, it isn't too difficult to believe that they could just shift back to their blue/pink Kree forms once the need for hiding their true identities was gone. They don't seem to use any of those shapeshifting powers any more though, so maybe Superboy Prime punched it out of them. Or the Scarlet Witch hexed it out of them. Or (more likely) Genis-Vell wiped it out when he rebooted the universe by killing Eternity's son Entropy.
Frankly, much as I enjoy Kurt's work, I do think the Ruul idea was a bad one. I dig that he wanted to restore the Kree to some type of threat, but to do so by, in essence, turning them into Skrulls?

Once there was one Kree-soldier a member of the Emperial Guard of the Shi'ar empire. His name is Commando, he also appeared in the I.G. mini series.
Whatever happened to this guy? Is he still on the I.G, or did he go back to his people?

I forgot about the Kree losing over 90% of their people. How did the Kree excatly take back their Emprie from the Shi'ar with such small numbers?

I completely misunderstood the Ruul, it seems...
I thought they were just a disguise of sorts for the Kree, courtesy of the Forever Crystal. I never realised they were meant to permanently replace the old-school Kree at all, i thought they were just a means to an end for their Maximum Security plot?
How did Maximum Security end, exactly? I don't remember it well, but i do remember enjoying it at the time...

How did Maximum Security end, exactly? I don't remember it well, but i do remember enjoying it at the time...It ended with Ego being absorbed by Quasar, if I remember correctly. The Ruul/Kree thing didn't really end, so much as it trailed off into a fight with the Shi'ar behind the scenes.

Yeh Maximum Security ended when everyone realised the Ruul had just set them all up and I guess the intergalactic council relented with the earthisprison schtick.

I remember Quazar, but i don't remember what the story was with the Kree.
But if you tell me it wasn't really resolved, that would explain that...
I'm suddenly reconsidering my affection for that story! i'm gonna have to see about digging it out again.

The Ru'ul were created by the Supreme Intelligence, and the Kree history is full of racism. The blue-skins, viewed as "pure", were able to reach higher levels of society and the military than pink-skins. When the Ru'ul came along, since they were created by the Supreme Intelligence as a means to further the evolution (they had limited shapeshifting abilities, and had three main forms: worker, warrior, and a smaller form I forget the name of that was the only form they were showing in public. The worker and warrior forms were being passed off by the Ru'ul as a new, unknown species, when it was them all along), they believed that they were now the pure-blood of the Kree and were going around offering the blue and pink Kree two options: evolve or die.

True. Yet the pink Kree came as a result of the Supreme Intelligence trying again to jumpstart the Kree's evolution when the Kree were encouraged to mix with conquered alien races, yet still keep the Kree "pure." However, over time, the pink Kree are still viewed as second class citizens from the blue Kree.

So where exactly does the 'Live Kree or Die' story come into play?

IIRC, Live Kree or Die was before Avengers Forever and the Ruul stuff. It was a followup of sorts to the Galactic Storm event in Avengers. I don't remember exactly what happened during the story (something to do with the Lunatic Legion trying to destroy the earth in revenge for Galactic Storm I think), but I know that it ended up with the Supreme Intelligence under SHIELD supervision on the moon, which led into the SI's involvement in Avengers Forever.
Or (more likely) Genis-Vell wiped it out when he rebooted the universe by killing Eternity's son Entropy.Wrong way round. Genis killed Eternity, and Entropy took his place.
