Do you remember the Tangent comics by DC? Of course you do. Here's how to play:
Take a hero or villian (preferally one that hasn't already been used) and create a new character/s with the same name but different origin, abilities and background.
I'll start.
Doll Man -- photo-journalist Roy Harper has the ability to transfer his soul/essence/personality into dolls or mannequins making them come alive and move about. While he is occupying the dolls/mannequins he body goes into a deep sleep. He can animate any doll making appear as real as a human (with his face, his fingerprints) or as its natural state. He can even animate/occupy materials such as clay or mud if shaped into the proper form.
He gained his ability during a senior class trip to the Caribbean.
Firestorm -- covert black-ops anti-terrorist team consisting of four men led my ex-SEAL member Ron Raymond. They are a last resort option, once they are sent on a mission they cannot be recalled. They leave no trace of their actions, using fire as their stock-in-trade to erase any evidence of their missions.
Now it's your turn. You can use DC or Marvel, Image, Valiant, Harris, Ultraverse or other if you prefer.

Oh yea I remember those comics. I collected a few.
Anywhos here's mine.
Green Arrow-Ophelia Kings was a fashion model throughout most of her childhood, but no matter what she said or did she always felt like as if she was living a lie in comparrison to the more adventurous person she wanted to be instead of the symbol of beauty on magazines. During slumber she transforms both mentally as well as physically into an alien like green skin being who constantly goes out in the middle fo the night and commits all sorts of acts that Ophelia would never do normally. When in her more alien looking form she is surrounded by a powerful greenish forcefield that acts as a weapon to bounce off any or most attacks and can countattack by sending the forcefield towards the target or her choosing and can even project several of these fields at a time. Also when inside the field she is able to fly at mach speeds and during travel in this mode she is reffered to many to resemble a 'green arrow;.

I'll play along....
In 1855, Boston "Deadman" Brand was just a little boy when his sherriff father was gunned down trying to apphend the dangerous outlaws only known as the Trigger Twins. 20 years later, Brand started on his nomadic quest through the Old West as a detective, searching for the people who killed his father. He picked up the moniker Deadman when, while on one of his first cases, he was in a shootout with a bank robber he was about to apphend. The bank robber was heard as saying "I know I shot yer, yer a dead man!" after he shot Brand. Brand not only survived (think Clint Eastwood in Fistful of Dollars) but went on to solve many cases and apprehend many criminals as the man who seemingly not be killed.
Deadman was an excellent brawler, trick shooter, sharpshooter, horseman and an expert with the lariat. He was also a skilled detective and expert tracker.

That sounds like The Lone Ranger's origin. :p
Alright, here goes:
Detective Chimp! See, he was this... uh, chimp, right? And he could... detect... things. Damnit, nevermind, le'me try again.
Rex the Wonder Dog! Rex is a dog who's... wonderful, 'cause... he can, like, talk... and stuff...
Okay, how about The Creeper? Jack Ryder, a dirty, mentally unstable vagabond, finds a tattered jacket in a dumpster one night and realizes that upon wearining it, the shadows move to accomodate him. At night, he stalks Gotham's unprotected alleys waiting for criminals, unseen and unheard save for his unique aroma and nerve wracking stifled laughter.

Security Guard Harvey Dent was in way over his head when he discovered the sadistic criminal known as Scarface breaking into an experimental laboratory on the grounds of Gotham University. There was a struggle, and in the resulting accident, both men were absorbed into a vat of unstable biomass. By the next morning the biomass had stabilized and hardened into a male humanoid form with Harvey's face, thoughts, and memories. Harvey discovered that his new body was extremely resilient and resistant to damage. And that he was not its only occupant. Scarface's consciousness also resides within the new body and vies for control in times of great stress or danger. During those times, Harvey's face melts away and the disfigured visage of Scarface takes its place. Can they find a common ground against the cops and criminals out to do them in? Only as the composite being known as Two-Face.

Ok I'll play
The New Gods: The new mafia that's quickly gaining ground across the entire country of America, but slowly a rebellion is started by the son of the leader, Derek Sid. Rion O'Riley (mother's maiden name) and his partners Matt Ron and Ray Lits he are single-handidly bringing down the family.
Yea it's lame and it's really similiar to the Grant MOrrison Seven Soldier version.

It might sound like it, but not really. But then again, there isn't too many western heroes that don't pay some sort of homage to the Lone Ranger. Actually, it's more of a cross between Batman and the tv show Kung Fu (or at least that's how I intended it to be) :p

Some good ones there. Especially like the Creeper one with the shadows moving with him.
Here's mine - Green Lantern. Haley Jones was a down and out street tramp in New York City, when she helped save billionaire magnate Charles Thane from a street gang, who were about to rob him. Thane was dieing anyway of an inoperable tumor and once dead leaves his mansion and money to Haley. Up in the attic of this strange old haunted house, Haley discovers the Green Lantern. Within this supernatural vessel of light are the souls of seven demons. At Haley's command these demons will spill out from the lantern and kill whoever she commands, once dead the souls of the victims are sucked into the green lantern and next time it is they who emanate from within to kill, and the those there before have gone. So if she has them kill an elephant say, then next time a demonic elephant will appear.
Sometimes the demons get carried away and kill those that Haley wants to live, such as her husband and friends.

Detective Chimp! See, he was this... uh, chimp, right? And he could... detect... things. Damnit, nevermind, le'me try again.
Detective Albert E. Chimp of the L.A.P.D. is a cop gone bad in a world gone mad! Detective Chimp is justice in a city without law. The long arm of the law now carries a magnum 45. He never runs out of the bullets, but he is short on mercy. If you are in trouble, pray he is coming, pray he is not coming for you. Do you feel lucky, punk?
Doll Man - Being the city's most feared gangster is no easy task when you are only two and a half feet tall. Specially when you are into wearing pink women clothes at all times, gaining you the nickname Doll Man!
Uncle Sam - He is Nicky's uncle from his mother's side. He coaches the local junior badminton team on the weekends. He is kinda boring.
The Red Bee - Emperor Trhzzzarghar of the Most Holy Empire of the Omnihive is the crimson bee, intergalactic tyrant . No wait, crap! Too much like Queen Bee.
Deadman - Boston Brand has terminal cancer, and he only has six months to live. He is going to die, but he is not going to do it alone! Nothing to lose and everything to win, Boston Brand now hunts the most dangerous criminals in the world with no fear, because he already is a DEADMAN! TUN TUN TUN!
Angel and the Ape - Zaraphanel was just a normal cherub, serving God and singing boring hymns to his glory all day long, but now he only has three days to save Creation, and his partner is a lovely Spider-Monkey who holds the secret to... no, never mind that sounds retarded.
OK, gotta get back to work.

the Hour Man
Deep inside Cadmus, Dr. Magnus was experimenting with entrance into an inter-dimensional region he called "the Phantom Zone," which he hoped could be used as a means of near instantaneous transportation. During the attempt to open a stable portal, the prometheum went critical, bathing him in a mix of pan-dimensional energy, and depositing him in the Phantom Zone.
He was presumed dead, but in the clean-up, Cadmus brought a special operative, a psychic, Agent John Jones, "the Manhunter," to see if he could reconstruct the events. He sensed the presence of Dr. Magnus, and more importantly, Magnus sensed him! Using the link as an anchor, Magnus was able - finally - to reconnect with our world, but only for minutes at a time, and try as he might, no more than sixty minutes per day. The rest of the time, he observes, unseen and intangible, but when needed, he emerges to save the day, before being pulled back into his new nether world.

I did this a couple of years ago, with a superhero RPG I was running, basically using Marvel names in a WWII context.
The hero team, eventually consisted of -
The Wasp - Errol Flynn-style swashbuckling swordsman.
The Human Torch - square-jawed, flag-suited superpatriot who recieved his name from a vision of the Statue of Liberty.
Marvel Girl - Flying, superstrong 'All-American Girl'.
'Thunderbolt' Ross - Doc Savage-esque adventurer who came into possession of the magical belt of Thor, granting him superhuman strength.
The Red Skull - Cloaked, Shadow-style Mystery Man.
In their first adventure, they had to foil several attempts to kidnap a scientist and steal his secret invention. They also kept running into a mysterious government agency which dealt with weird activities - just as the FBI were referred to as G-Men and Treasury Agents as T-Men, these guys were colloquially called X-Men.
Of course, to maintain secrecy, the scientist was referred to only as Professor X and his invention as The Thing.
I remember one villain, a mad inventor called Doctor Strange who had a giant armoured zeppelin called The Hulk and a Death Ray called the Cyclops.
Unfortunately, I lost a lot of notes during a move, so there's a lot I can't remember.

I toyed around with an X-Men twist, in which some of the genders were reversed. Cyclops Was the beautiful Slim Summers, and her boyfriend was Gene, "Mr. Marvel" Grey. They fought alongside Bobbi "Icegirl" Drake, Henrietta McCoy, AKA the Beast, and Wendy Worthington, the Angel. There was also Lorne "Polaris" Dane, and his girlfriend Alexandra "Havoc" Summers. All brought together by Dr. Charlene Xavier.

THE METAL MEN
Mike Goldman. Greg Irons. Mark Uri. Tina Platt. John Ledbottom. Ted Isaac Nelson. Six of America's finest, a crack team of Air Force pilots, until a terrible catastrophe over the skies of Iraq. Their bodies mangled beyond conventional medicine's ability to repair them, the US Government instead used them as guinea pigs in a revolutionary cyborg experiment. Their bodies were outfitted with nano-bots that reconstructed their nervous system and musculature. Now more machine than man, each one has taken on the properties of the metal for which they're named. Gold. Iron. Mercury. Platinum. Lead. Tin. Now fighting to defend America from all enemies, they must also fight to retain their humanity before the semi-sentient nano-bots work their way, cancerlike, into their brains, shutting off their emotions and truly making them--METAL MEN.
