Just to let you know, "Epic Movie" looks to be the leading contender for Worst Movie of 2007 at this point. Over at Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/epic_movie/), it has gotten exactly *one* (mildly) positive review, and lots of very, very negative ones.

Frankly, reading the negative reviews is probably more entertaining than seeing the movie.

"It’s generally considered bad form for a critic to advocate the kidnap and torture of specific filmmakers, but I’ll tell you this: If you did it, and you confessed to me, no way would I turn you in."

Wow, it's doing even worse on rottentomatoes than it is on metacritic.

Either way, the only person who liked it was some guy from Entertainment Weekly.

But Entertainment Weekly is a bastion of integrity! No way theyd lie to us about whether a movie was bad or not.

Also, why have all these shills been coming to the board lately?

uhhhh, this looks like one of the worst movies ever made. Thanks to crap like Epic Movie and Date Movie, kids these days wouldn't believe you if you told them that parody movies were once funny.

Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer should be banned from making another movie.

Epic Movie has been on 4chan's /tv/'s shit list since the first trailer came out.

And I think they're justified. Epic Movie isn't a parody movie; it's every movie that was even mildly successful in the past three years thrown together in the hope that something will be funny.

The "jokes" are trite and predictable, the skits are hackneyed, and the selection of movies is poor. Epic Movie might have gotten away with parodying a genre of films or a very small selection of movies, but it grabbed onto more than it could and failed accordingly.

Epic Movie can't even be properly called a parody movie, since they included Borat. Borat. Think about that. You can't parody a movie that's already a parody. Epic Movie is leeching off of the popularity of all the movies it's included in the futile hope that they'll hit gold at least every joke in ten.

And the worst part is, since they're pandering to the lowest common denominator of movie-goers with their "comedy," they'll still end up making a shitload of money.

Man, just think how funny something like Date Movie or Epic Movie would have been if it had been made in the 70's by Abrahams and the Zuckers, or Mel Brooks.

Mel Brooks would have made a movie about some retarded producers trying to get him to direct a movie that parodies all the bigest hits of the day. At least it would have had a more imaginative name than Epic Movie.

Normally, you could do it by just being alive, but /tv/ is generally calmer and more reasonable. There's even a couple intelligent people there.

Being universally reviled on /tv/ is takes some doing.

I dunno if that was sarcasm on your part or not. I strongly suspect it was, but I've learned never to trust my sarcasm meter.

"Scary Movie" did that with "Scream", which was basically a parody of slasher flicks already. I couldn't believe how much dialogue they lifted directly from "Scream", except "Scream" was funny, "Scary Movie" was just stupid.

yea, i'm not sure if the scary movie people got the fact that scream was at least 90% comedy to start with. and oddly enough wes craven's scariest film to that date.

the only scene i ever liked was in the scary movie 3 or 4 commercial with shaquille o'neal in "Saw". i still chuckle from the two parts they showed form that in commercials and i don't have to see the film, cause i know it can't get better than that, and i've heard it gets so much worse. even dr. phil is palatable for 10 seconds with little to no dialogue.

Date movie was considered unfunny by some of the most tasteless people i know, people who thought Employee of the Month was terrefic. They did this thing, a few times in the movie, where something from another movie happened, or a character from another movie appeared, but their was no joke. They lifted it directly, or just had a character appear. Like having a napolean dynamite lookalike, or an owen wilson one...no joke, they just showed up.
That is the laziest attempt at comedy i have ever seen, ever. It's so lazy, and so unfunny, i couldn't laugh at the next movie i saw because i was still so shocked that something so unfunny could be made into a film.
The trailors for Epic Movie do the same thing, they show jokes lifted from other movies, movies that weren't particularly funny (Click comes to mind), and they show a character from another movie, without doing a joke.
Crap, lazy, lazy crap.

The failing of this and indeed all the Scary Movie/Date movie style projects is down to one thing.

They are making fun of something that is ridiculous in the first place.

That is a little easy to do, make Lord of the Rings seem silly ...it is silly, its making it seem great that is the real trick, that requires the real talent.

I would like to see a parody movie that focuses on Oscar nominated movies and subjects and makes fun of the pompousity of "social issue" movies, to me that would be damn funny.

Important Movie ! or something along those lines.

I went to go see Epic Movie the first day it came out, there where a couple of chuckles here and there, especially the fact that the Jack Sparrow in the movie kept making weird hand gestures whenever he spoke. But yeah, i was wondering whether it would be funnier if you were stoned... ;)

In my honest opinion, the problem is that these newer parody movies are trying to hard to squeeze in as much stuff as they can and they end up being both terrible and forgettable. The older parody movies like Airplane!, Young Frankenstien and Spaceballs, all stuck to one main theme and also showed restrained in handling things that were part of the current pop-culture.

Mike Pothier

Even a parody movie needs its own inner logic. The jokes need context. The Naked Gun movies all still made sense in some bizzare way. They weren't just one movie rip off after another.

I payed to see Date Movie. I won't make the same mistake with Epic Movie.

Scary movie (THE FIRST ONE) was good cause of the following thing and thing future movies should do

1) mean as heck and really savage. Came at the time when people were getting tried of these scream type movies. Didnt rush it out right after the first scream came out

2) havent really been a big spoof in a while

3) Had jokes that were funny even if you didnt see the movies they were spoofing

4) Out of nowhere Gags like the female Teacher with her balls hanging out of her shorts. The retarted cops. The physical gags

5) A funny lead, which style the actress in this movie copying

6) pretty much focuse on one genera, didnt try to do to much

If I might make a GENERAL suggestion?

Epic Movie was number one on the charts last week and number 3 this week. You know what kind of movies these people make, and how awful they are, yet you place your money down and propel them to enough success to allow them to produce another movie while snickering behind their hands at the audiences eating the shitburger.

Stop paying to eat their shitburger and they'll stop making them.

Now I'll bet you people will be right there in line next year when they release Scary Movie 5, and then toss scathing "OMIGAWD its teh SUXXORS!" reviews in response.

Me? I didn't see it. I won't see SM5, either.

I win.

Could I make a suggestion? Maybe you could, you know, actually read the thread before you comment on it.

I didnt go see the movie, and several others on the thread did not see it either. We're not paying athing to see it, so theres goes your only point (and actually dignifying it as such is being generous, inmy opinion)

You know as in, I'm not targeting anyone on this thread so much as the general audience that eats shitburgers and then complains about the taste. As in, the pronoun "you" is used as general universal pronoun.

My point is that, witty and smart aside, if you (GENERAL FUCKIN UNIVERSAL usage) support these hacks, you have no right to complain.

Ah, of course. Foolish me. Its not like the whole tone of your post was hostile, and from any way you read it came off as an attack on the people posting in the thread. No, its obvious that you were talking about the movie going public. If you actually have a salient point, next time, try to write it down more clearly.

I'm so sad this movie is making money, as it really is the worst of the worst. The TV spots for this movie included a scene parodying Borat (which is wrong for many reasons that others have mentioned, the least of which being that it's not an "epic movie", which is film's supposed target) and a scene in which a Paris Hilton look-alike is crushed by a fat person. I don't really even get the parody there. It's like the expect laughs just for dressing someone up like someone famous.

If I saw this movie drunk, with my old buddies from high school, would we laugh?

No. I was foolish enough to see Date Movie thinking it might be so stupid it'd be funny like it's Scary Movie predecesors in rare moments. The movie turned out to be so oppressively unfunny that it was actually maddening. For example, there's a scene parodying Jennifer Lopez in the The Wedding Planner in which "Jennifer" (who introduces herself as "Jello", to make sure the utter simpletons in the audience will get who's she's supposed to be) inexplicably jumps into a shiny popstar getup and shakes a cartoonishly large ass for 2-3 minutes. This is a joke that was relevant, maybe, 5 years ago? Is this is the "humor" Epic Movie promises to deliver--and it seems to be--you're better off passing.

Okay, so I figured out the "plot" of the film, even though I don't believe that there are plots in these "(insert type of movie) Movie" films.

It's about four losers who suck in high school (including one who keeps getting the brunt end of "Magneto"'s locker door-to-the-face shtick).

The main plot is essentially a dumbass-style version of "The Chronicles of Narnia", with these losers entering a cluttered wardrobe to a lame place called "Gnarnia". It's just like Narnia, except everyone's dumber and made to look like cruel humor.

So, all the other films parodied are simply sight gags that just show up outta nowhere.

Sucks to high heaven. And I didn't see the film to figure this out. (to upward) Thank you!
