Just curious who is everyone's favourite resident of Jack Kirby's Fourth World. Vote for your #1 favourite in the poll and feel free to list your top five in the thread. ('Cause I'm sure the big guns will dominate the poll, but I'm curious who the most popular second-stringers are.)
My list:
1 and 2. Mister Miracle and Big Barda - Love 'em. Just love 'em. Happily married couples are rare in comics. And I love the switched-up gender dynamics of their relationship. SO funny. If I had to choose between the two, I'd give Scott the nod because he has a snazzier costume and "escape artist" is such a cool occupation. But they're much better as a couple.
3. Darkseid - Well, yeah. The "Great Darkness Saga" is enough to get him on the list.
4. Kanto - A dandy who serves as Darkseid's personal assassin? Great character.
5. Orion - "Rage-filled warrior" is a cliche, but Orion makes it work. I especially love the prophesy stuff with him being destined to fight his father to the death in the firepits.
Honourable mentions: Lashina, for her starring role in Ostrander's SUICIDE SQUAD. Vermin Vunderbar, for being such a great snivelling toady. Forager, just cause he looks neat. Metron, for being such a dick.

I didn't see any of the Forever People (Big Bear, Mark Moonrider, Serafin, Vykin, or the Infinity Man)!

I chose Orion, because I had a huge arugment that got me in trouble because no one but me could see the awesomeness that is Orion compared to the not as powerful king of some earth based alien crossbreeding experiment from another comic company. *whistles innocently*

You did DARE to forget Forager he was so much an intresting character hated by the bugs because he was "Ugly" and by the New Gods because he was a Bug he had to wear a mask and made the ultimate sacrifice in cosmis odyssey for all the DCU
Too many choices, but I'll go with Orion. Barda would be a close second. Then there's Mister Miracle, Darkseid, ...
It's ridiculous that I can still make this statement, over 30 years after the original experiment was aborted, but there is so much untapped potential in the entire New Gods concept. Unfortunately, the best idea DC seems capable of coming up with is turning Darkseid into a member of Superman's "rogues gallery".
As for Orion, I did appreciate Walt Simonson's efforts in his solo series, even though his take on the character didn't really fit in with my own. It'd be nice to see someone give the characetr another shot somewhere, but I'm not holding my breath. I don't have any faith at all in this hype about the New Gods "having a good year" in 2007. But Orion has one of the best background stories of any character in mainstream comics; problem is, it's all tied up with the Fourth World mythos, which has been so diminshed by making it a minor subplot in the more popular DCU hero-narratives that it doesn't really have any dramatic impact any more. So it's extremely unlikely Orion or any of the rest will ever be utilised to anything like their full potential, unless DC were to confound all expectations and make it a Vertigo series, like Lucifer or something. Now that'd be interesting, depending on the creative team involved.

Darkseid... no question. I love Mr. Miracle and Big Barda, but Darkseid is simply the best.
If you don't agree with me, Darkseid will set forth his parademons to pillage and destroy your house. :evilsmile

Scott Free and Barda all the way! But Metron is a cool character who had some face time in the recent Blue Beetle issue.

Barda. She's kicking so much ass in Birds of Prey right now. Plus Nicola Scott may be the first artist to ever draw Barda's costume so it doesn't look completely ridiculous.
BARDA!

Orion, definetly. I like Mister Miracle quite a bit, but the Walter Simonson Orion series was one of the books that got me back reading comics. Orion is a beast.
And on a side note, Ostrander's Martian Manhunter series was the other book that brought me back. Two comics that I still lament the cancellation of. :(

I wouldn't be surprised with a story about him manipulating Darkseid, or him being the one that pulls the strings after all. Because as much as I love Orion as a character, things always turn out sweet for metron, just the way he anticipated.

Why isn't L. Ron Hubbard on this list?
Although, I can never really have a God who's name is Ron.

Why are Scott and Barda one choice?
(It doesn't really matter for my vote because I chose Darkseid, but I'm still curious.)

Why are Scott and Barda one choice?
(It doesn't really matter for my vote because I chose Darkseid, but I'm still curious.)A few reasons:
1. I really wanted to squeeze another character into the poll, so I lumped Scott and Barda together. (Hey, putting Vermin Vunderbar in the poll seemed like a good idea at the time.)
2. I am admittedly biased on this, but I think of Scott and Barda as a matched set. (Though I notice that, while Barda always shows up in books that Scott appears in - like Giffen's JLI - Scott rarely shows up in books that Barda appears in - like Morrison's JLA and BIRDS OF PREY. Heh. What a subtle demonstration of how gender stereotypes have been inverted between the two.) I also figured that folks who like Scott would probably like Barda just as much, and vice versa.
3. I was guessing that Scott and Barda would at best be a distant third to Darkseid and Orion, so I didn't think lumping them together would affect the poll that much. I regret that decision now that I see how things have shaken out. Crud, there goes the scientific validity of my goofy online poll. Metron would be very disappointed in me. :(
