View Full Version : Does anyone know of any books about R. F. Outcault?
Or The Yellow Kid, for that matter. I have a research project that I'd like to pursue, but unfortunately libraries around here are lacking. All I have to go by are two or three websites (including Wiki), but i'd need actual published materials about the guy.
Merci beacoup in advance, by the way.

Try Bill Blackbeard's introduction to R.F. Outcault's The Yellow Kid: A Centennial Celebration of the Kid Who Started the Comics (Northampton, MA: Kitchen Sink Press, 1995).
R.C. Harvey's Children of the Yellow Kid and Art of the Comic Strip or David Kunzle's History of the Comic Strip might contain some information on Outcault, although I can't confirm this.
Or if you're desperate, you could check out Maurice Horn's World Encyclopedia of Comics, which presumably has an entry on either Outcault or the Yellow Kid. Just bear in mind that Horn is not a reliable source.

This is almost unquestionably the definitive work on Outcault and the Yellow Kid.
There is also decent information in Brian Walker's Comics Before 1945.
Thanks, guys! Very much appreciated. If I could find those four sources, that should be enough for the project.
