Found my old Acid Man comic. I drew it when I was 18 and I'm 36 now. Please forgive the terrible spelling but I was a method artist back then. The whole thing was done under the influence of mind bending hallucinogenics.
I'll post the first three pages and more later.
Just for fun.

I love it.
Ever think of doing a follow up, no Acid Man, where he lives in a really mundane world with the occasional flash back ?
Not being a drug guy myself ( I spent my teen years hallucinating without the use of narcotics and for me personally I didnt like it ) I can't relate but I have always loved the use of drugs as a way to enter fantastical scenarios.
Plus it is really funny, it has a minor Hunter Thompson vibe, the use of grandiose narration to explain silly almost childlike flights of fantasy.
Yes indeed, I find it to be charming as heck.

Hey thanks Captain Video. I appreciate your thoughts a great deal. I did tinker with the idea of doing more over the years but it was half a life time ago now.At the end of the day I'm just not an accomplished enough artist to make it a really good comic.
I am now an accomplished writer though, so I never gave up on that and that is my living.
I just wanted to share this mad old piece of work I did.
And as for taking drugs, I'm glad you didn't because although they influenced my work early on and inspired me early on, they eventually held me back big time.
A good drug story was Legends of the Dark-Mite. In which hallucinogenics were used to create great art and a bonkers story.

Set in Victoria City in a Nuclear Ravaged Britain. A genetically engineered vampire, deals justice on the mean streets below his gigantic tower. Most of the main characters had an addiction to something. Be it blood, electricity, or ceratonin.

Yeah I was doing LSD in that period of my life and I did a lot of art while under the influence and this Acid Man was one of those things. I just blasted it out over a few days or so. It has a raw mad energy as a result but also suffers as a result I suppose. It was teen thing. I stopped doing LSD once I'd felt I'd got all I could from it. The Beatles did the same thing but I'd never recommend it because you have to have a strong mind and the right people around you. And it has destroyed so many, so quickly. This was the 80's and I was a big Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd, Beatle, Led Zep fan and I was kinda following in their footsteps. But eventually drugs just eat all your ambition and inspiration away.

Ha ha. I probably did suck really. As I never tried to do anything with that comic or improve on it once sober. I hid inside myself for years. And it is only in the last 4 years I have pushed myself as a writer and become successful.

I am interested to know, do you think that the drug more than inspiring you, is more useful for freeing your mind up from the "this is stupid", "this doesnt make sense", "people will laugh" nagging little voice that everyone who tries to write or draw has ?
I have always found it interesting that people on drugs often do great works...so I wonder what it is about them that gives that creative spark.
Any thoughts on that one ?
( hope I am not prying too much )

Nope not prying. It all depends on the drug of course but hallucinogenics such as LSD, which is what I used doing the comic, definitely expands the mind and it unleashes your imagination. If you close your eyes for instance while on LSD you can see incredible things. And it's not just seeing but feeling. Music becomes something far more tangible, the water gurgling through the central heating system in the house becomes a link to God or the Devil etc... So yes, I think if you are already artistic and of a strong mind, then something like LSD will open doors and take you to knew places, and if it is a shared experience with like minded people then you really feel that you have tapped into something very powerful and profound. I think being young helps too. The Beatles were 26 -?, and I was 16 -20. Even bad trips, if you can survive them mentally are incredibly inspiring but also dangerous. LSD to an artist can be like manna from heaven.
What was stupid before may now appear breathtaking and mesmerizing. It definitely makes you temporarily mad and once sober you can't forget that you were once mad.
But then look at Syd Barrett, founder member of Pink Floyd, very psychadelic songs, but look at the cost, he went mad and stayed mad. That could have been me. And John Lennon was very fragile in later life. He took the most LSD of all The Beatles.

That's amazing stuff, Kara, and especially so for being so original. It's like the kind of strip Michael Moorcock could have come up with in his Jerry Cornelius days.
"The creator was a strange, strange thing indeed"... That's putting it mildly! Great concept.

See this new one is the down playing of really spectacular events, which makes it amusing.
I can't help but wish you finished these, I would seriously buy this if it was finished and published/self or otherwise ( I should imagine you would not be able to recreate the same sensibilities again though ).
You said you are now a working writer/artist, do you have any stuff you could pimp out that we might be able to purchase ?

See this new one is the down playing of really spectacular events, which makes it amusing. That was the idea, thanks man. The Great Pyramid was going to be in it. The reason why it was built was to act as a shock absorber for an astaroid collision. They had to place it just right and make it to precise dimensions and mass etc.
I can't help but wish you finished these, I would seriously buy this if it was finished and published/self or otherwise ( I should imagine you would not be able to recreate the same sensibilities again though ). It would be difficult to recapture that frame of mind I had back then. But maybe I could do it.
You said you are now a working writer/artist, do you have any stuff you could pimp out that we might be able to purchase ?
No comics. I'm a playwright, for theatre and radio and I've had one TV drama produced, all over in Britain. I've had one play published which you could buy, but that may not be your thing?

Couple of panels from my old Jooce comic. This is the Death Jester who is summoned by a Devil Worshiping Cult, who use a human sacrifice. I was about 17 when I did it, back in '88. The Death Jester warps itself into a demon. The rest of the comic is all on A1 and therefor to big to scan. I'm going to see if I can find a shop with a big enough scanner and post them at a later date.

I was always going to be an artist, you know, have exhibitions and stuff. I did have one exhibition, which went quite well, but I got into acting, and focused on that a lot. I did some art during that time. Some of which is here but I no my limitations and I knew that I was a better writer than either artist or actor and so developed that skill. I will go back to art though. I need to move into paints. That last picture was water soluble pencil crayons, and after a few layers they started to tear the paper, and I had to quit, before it ruined. So the picture is far from as deep as I intended.

Well, I decided to draw again. Especially now that someone else posted a blog with an online course. However, I'm not starting yet, as if something was stopping me. Perhaps it's me the one stopping myself...
I agree with Cap'n here. It's obvious that you're trying to convey something. But from that to knowing exactly what it is, well, it's another subject entirely.
However, I could say that you might be trying to show some confusion/despair or something regarding a particular subject. But don't pay any attention to me, I'm just digressing.
EDIT: BTW, I'm loving this last drawing, too. And you've tried several forms of art (acting, painting/drawing and writing). Kudos to you for doing that.

Yeah, defo working through stuff. I have this shadow hanging over my life. I've lost a lot of people and I've seen a lot of terrible things. I work through it in my writing now. I was always different, sometimes an outcast, and I think that appears in my work. And I've always found beauty in ugliness. Like rotten fruit, or decaying wood. I like imperfection and rawness. And I've always been a bit crazy.

I like it that you look into the reason behind the art. I'm glad it spoke to you in some way. Thank you. When I see art, sometimes I only appreciate the sheer beauty of the piece, but sometimes that piece screams for interpretation from the viewer. In those cases, I try to to go that extra-mile in order to try to understand what the artist wants to convey.
And thank you for your support. I think I owe it to you and the rest of the guys. Seeing you all posting your art has given me some strength.

Thanks mate. It's something I've been developing for a few years. It starts with four students arriving to take up residency in it. At that point it is firmly grounded in Liverpool, England. One of the residents is a mad professor who is working on a molecular transportation machine. Needless to say it goes wrong and the high-rise block end up lost in space. And the whole block is full of odd people. Some doors open into strange worlds.

Here's my Bat Joker from an Elseworld's idea I had, In which Batman is killed by the Joker. Jason Todd takes over as Batman and Selina Kyle becomes Robin, however Kyle is kidnapped by the Penguin and Todd breaks the Joker from Arkham, because he is the only person who can find Penguin. Joker agrees, and is genuinely remorseful for killing Batman, and since then has dedicated his life to recovery and meditation. Todd is captured and tortured at one point, leaving Joker to take on the Mantle of the Bat and rescue Todd and Kyle and in typical Joker style fall from a great height into the sea whilst fighting the Penguin.
Todd batman had no cape as the Bruce's cape caused his death. And Todd would have a prehensile cable like tentacle that would shout out from the back of his wrist, which would wrap around the neck of criminals. He could then tighten it and strangle them and subjugate them. He would be a very hardcore Batman.
Any way here's Batjoker - http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k86/lozpool/batjoker2.jpg

Wow. Just WOW. I'm digging it. A LOT. Do you have some more of the concept art for this story?
Reminded me of a Silver-Age Superman story in which he finds aliens living in a building. He encases the building in some sort of bubble and then throws it into the depths of space, so they can reach their homeplanet.
This also reminded me of The Twilight Zone.

At first it was going to be very cartoony and have animal characters like these few designs -
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k86/lozpool/nickbates_ape_COL.jpg
But then I decided I wanted it to be realistic and am currently working on a TV series verson. I have no designs at the moment as it is a writing project.
But maybe I could do both versions.

I could but that is not the done thing. I have to sell my idea purley as a written treatment. I can describe them of course. They would have their own ideas of how it would all look, which I could try and influence, once a production was underway.

I know exactly what you mean. In my case, on top of that, the comic book store I used to go to CLOSED, so I'm kinda nervous about it. Before closing they had placed a couple of orders, though. This is another one in a similar style. It's an earlier attempt, which shows. With each new one I got better and more detailed, I did about 4 and then I went colour. This one has hidden words and sentences, large enough to see if you look carefully. Although again reduced size obscures detail. This was a gift to my eldest sister, who is no longer with us. It survived a house fire and she gave me it back.

Yeah that's true. and one of my first loves was punk. There was a record shop in Liverpool back in the 70's and 80's called Probe. It's still going. But back then it was managed by Pete Burns of Dead or Alive and their plastic bag was a bit like one of my pen pictures.

A bit disturbing, but brilliant!!!
Without being at all derivative, your work reminds me of the power and intellectual feel of Brian Talbot's.
Your two B&W pieces are also very impressive; even at this size we can tell how much detail they must contain. We could probably spend hours finding out all its intricacies. Were they started with the final result in mind or did they develop as you worked on them?
Very, very good work.

Hey thanks Roquefort Raider.
I'm a big fan of Brian Talbot and he surely influenced my style.
As for the black and white pieces. I didn't plan them much. I may have planned a couple of things. Like the faces in the corner on one but I just made it up as I went along. sometimes the outline of one bit would suggest another and so on. but then I'd want certain things to be in it but wouldn't plan where.
The original plan for the witches had a third whitch in the middle distance. The room being deeper. But I bottled out of the depth that would need. But under that colour is a sketch of the third witch.

Very simple. I had drawn and coloured them in pencil crayons and shaded and highlighted them all on paper. Scanned them and then once in photoshop I just used the Watercolour tool in the Filter/Artistic section. You can alter the brush stroke size etc and opted for a fairly minimal one and that was the result.

It feels like few people use pencil crayons, but you do an amazing job with them. Do you start with breakdowns or do you go straight for the finished work? (I find that covering breakdowns with colored pencil is pretty hard, unless I use very dark tones).

Another amazing piece. When I saw it I thought it would make a great record cover (I grew up with vinyl records, back when we had decent-sized artwork to go with our music) and your Batman reference reminded me that the same character was on the Yellow Submarine album. Your kind of right. When I was a very small kid, I used to believe in all these witches and ghosts that invaded my room of a night. To try and deal with them I imagined that they had been shrunk down to a few inches in height by another witch, because they had done something wrong to her. Anyway I had all these little white men with big noses, who I invented, who lived under my bed and came out at night and patrolled my room, and protected me from the little evil ones.
I paid the little white men in a currency I made up called spooks. I always had to make sure I had lots of spooks. So I would invent bets that I was almost certain to win, put a large amount of spooks in the bet, and challenge the witches and ghosts to the bet. Of course I almost always one and was a billionaire, in spook currency. I occasionally still find myself doing it.
Yes that's right I was a crazy kid and I never got better!!!!!

I bought a pack of 28 coloured felt tip pens and did this number. My shading technique was to dirty the felt tip in the outline ink and the felt colour would darken. It's A2 in actual size. So again there is a lot of detail lost here. But I'd still like to share it.

21st October 89 t0 17th December 89. Two months. I can't remember how often I worked on it in that time. But I probably added something most days. And I would have had all kinds of other stuff on the go at the same time.
The black and white one took much longer, because there's a lot more detail in it. That is dated 1st Feb 89 to 22 May 89. Almost four months. I remember working on it for hours at a time. Day after day. The crazy thing about it and the others in that style, is the fact that I never used pencils first; I just inked. They'd have been so much better if I'd penciled them first and then inked over them. I just went with the mistakes.
and hey thanks for your comments.:)

The Lyrics
Legion of mind oh I, oh I
I started off as one
But then one can be split
And throughout my body
The fire of others is lit
Rot and Steel Freak
Nice Dream and Slayer
Atom Rock are all here
Each day brings another layer
Legion of mind oh I, oh I
Legion of mind oh I, oh I
I’m losing self control
Multiple faces scream
Face in the breakfast bole
Invaded by my dream
How many worlds are there
Spinning behind my eyes
How will I contain them
I’ve become a disguise
Legion of mind oh I, oh I
Legion of mind oh I, oh I
The myriad that is me
Rip each other apart
Causing supernovas
That tear through my heart
I fear this is madness
They crawl beneath my skin
Devouring my soul
Until I’m just a grin
Legion of mind oh I, oh I
Legion of mind oh I, oh I

I was going to do my own Elseworlds, beginning with Joker killing Batman in front of Jason Todd. Todd later becomes a far darker and brutal Batman. Catwoman is teamed up with the Joker but didn't think he'd kill Batman. she ends up turning on crime and becoming the new Robin, alone at first but later teaming up with Jason and falling in love. The Ventriloquist and Scarface were to be one of Todd's victims as he goes all hell bent on deleting Batman's rogues gallery one by one.
This is the only page I ever did, before I realized I wasn't cut out to do Batman comics. The Scarface picture was just an attempt at my version.

I'm going to post my Jooce Comic soon. It's all on A2 sized paper so I'll have to scan each page six times and then fit it all together in photoshop. That's why I've held back, it'll take ages. Here's an early picture of the Vampire character in it. I developed him further from this. He's a rock star who has actual ghosts for his live shows, flying about the audience, like the last scene in raiders of the Lost Ark, but in a rock concert. He developed into a vigilante, who was a rock star in the past.

Sounds like to much hard work man. But you are right. Oil paintings or airbrush work would have been the way to go. I just buzzed off drawing something without really planning it much and then quickly colouring it in and then showing it my 'smoking' buddies. Who would all go, "Wow!" and then dribble on it or something.

Hi 666. I've still been coming and looking at stuff. Project Runway is good.
I'm over on Comics Should Be Good a lot at the mo, in the JLA/Avengers League. Other than that, mad busy writing and working. Plus all my old art is now to big to just scan, I have to break them down into six parts and put them back together on Photoshop, which I did with a lot of the stuff I posted but some of my RAM has died and Photoshop won't open as a result. I took it in to get fixed and they didn't fix it. have to take it in again. Grrrr!

Hey Kara. Strangely enough, I thought I had repied to those last posts of yours, but it seems the CBR server had a problem. Oh well...
Perhaps the scanner thing is just a configuration issue? Because those last drawings rock, but you're right. It looks like the scanner didn't get the whole thing.
And thanx for asking about my Superman fanfic. I got a couple of ideas that I'm gonna throw in, but nothing really fancy or even important to the main plot (if there's one ;)), just a couple of little details to make things look prettier... Or something like that.

Excellent, and intriguing. Especially by what seems to be a bloody arrow coming out the nose. And it would seem, by the particular position of the hand, that it's the hand that guides the head's actions, as if you were trying to convey something about greed, or any of those feelings involving material things.
Was I right? Or am I thinking too much about it?

It's just difficult with monochrome to do it well. Just the suggestion of something out of focus behind, might make the picture seem more complete. But I could easily ruin it. There's such little space too.

You should use real heavy, high contrast streaks to emphasize the metal's reflective attribute. With the knife, make sure that the streak follows the curve of the blade and any raised features on the flat of it.

Metal is all about the contrast depending on how shiney you want it to look. Grab some reference material and take cues from it. When I was first trying to figure it out, I'd look at custom car magazines and use chrome bumpers as reference.

Looks promising, Kara. Another masterpiece in the works. Sadly, can't help you there, I suck with that kind of stuff, and that's why I've been wanting to practice. Perhaps Jason or David can help you out with this.
Thanks dood.
Interesting designs you've got there... sort of reminds me of 1960s underground comix stuff.
You should use real heavy, high contrast streaks to emphasize the metal's reflective attribute. With the knife, make sure that the streak follows the curve of the blade and any raised features on the flat of it.
Thanks for that. I'll give it a go. i know what you mean about the 60's vibe.

The Octopus looking thing is a Martian as described by H G Wells in War of the Worlds.
Thanks for the tips, I'll do just that.
Stay tuned to see if I pull it off.

LOVE that Martian!
Your work has a very cool underground vibe. It's a breath of fresh air for being so un-comicbooky!
For metal, the easiest way is to use parallel lines or varying width. Parallel lines of different shades of grey as well as different width would also give a good effect.
Cheers, mate, and keep 'em coming!

I wanted to finish the thread before commenting, but that might take a while. The work is too good to rush. Full marks from me, I am really loving your work. I don't know if anyone has mentioned it or not, but-- while maintaining your own voice-- your style does remind me of Maxon Crumb's.

Thanks Roquefort Raider. I'm a big War of the Worlds fan. Read it about ten times and listened to the musical more times than I could say. About time a I drew one as described. I'll do a Fighting Machine soon.
Thanks for the tips too.
I'll have a go tonight.

Thankyou. I'm glad you like it. There's some crap stuff in the thread too. I should weed it out.
I knew of Robert Crumb but not Maxon and just checked him out and I see what you mean. loved what I saw so far and will be checking it all out. Thanks for turning me on to him.
Are Robert and Maxon related? Some stuff looks similar.

Yep. Charles, Robert and Maxon are the three siblings. If you get a chance, check out the documentary Crumb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109508/). That's where I first saw Maxon's stuff, and its a very watchable doc all the way through.

God these are beautiful. Have you read/seen any of Vaughn Bode's work? Like Deadbone Erotica or Cheech Wizard? Here (http://www.markbode.com/site/vaughnbode.html) is a site if you're not familiar with him. I just mention him not as a comparisson, but as a possible source of inspiration to spark new directions for your work. Your art strikes a fine balance between the grotesque and the sublime, and is a chinese box of surprises. You have a very unique and personal vision, and I very much hope to see more.
I know what you mean about the earlier work, but I would keep it. I have the same feelings about poetry and prose I had written in hs/college, and reading it now is a dual edged sword: on the one hand its cringeworthy, but it also gives you a watermark showing how much you've improved. Of course, that's not meant as a negative criticism of any of your work-- just as a way of saying you've improved without losing the energy of your youth.

Thanks Albert. I'm so glad you picked those cartoon characters out. I'm very fond of them but they kind of went unnoticed.
I did get into some Vaughn Bode stuff in the early 90's through graph artist who had a few collected editions. I loved it. All those pert breasts. So I was undoubtedly influenced when I drew these. I can't remember the titles though. I'll have to pick them up.
You are right about the earlier work, I'll be true and keep it here, for the reasons you say.
I really got a buzz off reading your comments about the Chinese box and stuff. It was a real shot in the arm. So thanks for that.
I'd like to read some of your poetry, if I may?

Glad I could help with the shot in the arm.
And sure, I'd love to have you read some work. I'll be starting a thread on this forum shortly for some of my work. I've been adding some to a livejournal as well, and once that's ready I could add you to the friends list... don't know if you have a blog or not.
Alot of my work explores sexual themes that would get me banned pretty quickly, hence the need for a livejournal with filtering: once I link it to my sig, well, I would be concerned about the whole "linking to pornographic material" thing.
I probably could have been more coherent about all that, but its my 40th birthday today, so there's a little celebration static involved on my end.

The link is now in my signature, so feel free to do when you get a chance. How is the last sketch coming, the one with the knife? I'd be fascinated to see the finished piece, or even an update on where you are with it.

Awesome. I know how that can be, having moved several times this decade. Hopefully you have a good amount of space to work in. I'll keep an eye out for your new stuff.

I hate it when that happens-- I work out of spiral notebooks for freewriting and revisions, and with my ADD I always seem to misplace the one I need. Just remain calm, I am sure its in there somewhere.

I found it at last and will try and complete it in the next few days. In the meantime, here's the picture that inspired it. I drew it about 92. I was thinking about it because it wasn't scanned in and I wasn't sure where it was and thought just do a better one. They are quite different but I can see that they are brothers.

I can definitely see the kinship, and this is a great piece... but I like the composition you have going with the knives piece much more. The blades seem to bookend the piece, framing the streamofconsciousness elements within.
Still, I love the dichotomy of body and mind you have going in this one. The chains and the open/discorporeated eye are very effective symbols. Glad to see you working again and sharing.

Wow, another cool piece! I could easily see this picture on the cover of a book by William S. Burroughs or Michael Moorcock (in his Cornelius phase).

Yes, I could easily see this as a cover for Burroughs' The Soft Machine.

How's the knife piece coming along?
Digging that recent piece... it looks like it could be an album cover for a Pink Floyd record or something.
