View Full Version : From each X-Men group (1st 2nd, & 3rd wave), who was likely to lead a life of crime?

Pick one character from each group of X-Men, and tell me which do you think would have been likely to turn to the life of crime, based on their past, before they were X-Men, during their time as an X-Man, and times when they've abandonded the X-Men (if applicable).
Also, explain why you chose them.
NOTE: I'm not talking about becoming evil (mustache twirling) genius'. I'm talking about theives using their powers for personal gain, political corruption, or wealth, like a Black Tom, Avalanche, Pyro, Hellfire Club or any other super powered thief.
My three picks would be:
Cyclops - Orphaned in his youth, his circumstances turned even worse by becoming an unwitting accomplice in small time robberies with his so-called guardian. Without the aid of Xavier, this easily could have lead to a professional life of crime.
Vulcan - Once again, another orphaned tradgedy. As a human in an alien environment, on top of being a slave, he was vulnerable to succumbing to the savageries in a prison system with nothing else to lose.
Storm - Having no direction from loving parents, the streets are all that Ororo had to survive. And with that comes the darker side of life. Political corruption, an unjust social system, and no direction. Starting off early in life using her petty thefts as a means to survive, Storm is a likely candidate for this lifestyle.

Of the O5, I really don't think any of them could lead such dastardly lives. They were so wonderfully noble and loveable, and their origins and stuff don't really lead into anything evil. I think it was almost done on purpose, looking at the Brotherhood's origins and the X-Men's.

From the originals, Cyclops. See AoA, in which he was raised by Sinister and worked for Apocalypse. I could see Sinister or someone else like Magneto picking him and he working for Essex in the 616 too or becomng a member of the Brotherhood. Or even instead of idealistic, without a guidance, he could easily become a cynic who just minded his own business, even more isolated in his shell and not connected to anyone.
From the second team, Vulcan, for similar reasons of Profezzor X.
For the third, Nightcrawler, the treatment he had by mankind could lead him to hate and being a member of the Brotherhood for vengeance.

Never read that fanfic "X-Manson," huh?

Scott's a possibility, but I'll go with Warren. Hot-headed, fabulously wealthy, if he takes a shine to the Hellfire Club, then he totally goes to the dark side.
Vulcan, without question.
Apparently, if he was the last Rasputin alive, Colossus would be the third team's entry, but I'll go with Nightcrawler as well.
Is it ever explained how a boy raised by magik wielding gypsies became a Catholic? because if that is missed, the attitude he has when Xavier rescues him in GSX-Men #1 becomes the norm, I think

Even in AoA cyke was noble. Warren I can easily see becoming corrupted by money and power.

Warren I can easily see becoming corrupted by money and power.
Warren could be one of those corrupt TV evangelists getting all sorts of people to send him their money. Heck, he could even create his own religion based around himself.

The O5? Scott, most likely. He has a total lack of nurturing from age 8 to about age 16, lived on the streets, and got the hell beaten out of him by Jack Winters. That's a recipe for turning to crime - no options, no love or friends, violent life, bad role models, and likely a felony record that will haunt him forever. (*Not* that everyone who lives through that turns to crime. Please don't misunderstand.)
I'd actually pick Jean as next most likely to go off. Telepathy is a good way to find out everybody's secrets. *That* is real power, and Jean might find it hard to resist without a mentor to guide her (despite Charles' sometimes interesting ethics) and friends to provide some grounding. (Her telekinesis is what comes in first, but that's gotta be ripe for abuse too. Too easy to commit a crime and leave no fingerprints.)
Warren I'd say is next before either Bobby or Hank, but remember he was patrolling as a superhero and trying to do good before he even heard of Xavier. Still, without his friends to provide real friendship and affection, Warren might be tempted by his less savory buddies - like Cameron Hodge. But note that in the Children of the Atom mini, Magneto tries to recruit Warren before Xavier does. He appeals to Warren's pride, ego, and sense of exclusivity...and fails completely. Warren tells him to piss off and flies away.
Bobby's next. I think he's far too invested in middle-class conformity to ever commit crimes. Although maybe that just means he'd do anything to keep it if threatened. I can't see that for Bobby though - I think he's too good a guy. Still, with parents more invested in appearances than in him, in some ways Bobby may be the most likely to do something awful in a panic, and then desperately cover it up. Maybe *he* should be first on the list.
Hank is of course at the bottom of the list. No question. :) Smart enough to know that crime doesn't pay, and that he can make a good living doing stuff that does pay. Charming enough to make friends wherever he goes, and with parents that love him for who he is. Now it is possible that, once he turns himself blue, he feels angry and isolated enough to do something (if he's not an X-Man, he's probably not an Avenger either, and there goes all of his support system.) I'd still put him at 5 of 5 though.
Vulcan is first of course (those wacky Summers boys). Petra, Sway and Darwin? I don't know. Darwin I think is the least likely, mostly because he deals very serenely with what's thrown at him already. His mom has basically disowned him, and he doesn't have any friends. But he's so damn smart he has to know that he has a future, and can have it on his own terms. Of course, maybe that just makes him a mad scientist, but I think he's a bit passive and people pleasing for that. But then, that's only when he was a child. As an adult, he might be different. I guess it depends on how much arrogance kicks in.
Petra's interesting. She's going to get sick of living as a homeless person. Once she turns 18 and can't be sent to a foster home, I think she'll try to make some cash by her mutation. (Edit - Er, just like she does in her back story. D'oh! Um, she'll do it on a far greater scale.) Which might get her killed by diamond cartels. Poor Petra. :( Seriously, it depends on if she trusts anyone enough to ask for help. She'd be a great geologist, but she won't be able to get the education without a hand up - she has absolutely nothing as a teen. (She'd be like the foster kids who are kicked out at 18 with no support and nowhere to go.)
Sway we just don't know enough about. It all depends if she's got any family to help her out, and if she still has the money to go to college without her parents. If those aren't true, she'd have a very very tough time ahead, much like Petra. She's more likely to have friends and family-friends than either Petra or Darwin though, and they'd help her out.
I don't feel like doing the all new cast at the moment, so I'll say Sunfire. Just because. I have absolutely no reason for saying it and don't actually believe it, but why not?

i actually see Warren as the least likely. of the original 5 he's the only one of them to actually adopt the life of a superhero on his own and before Professor X found him. The Avenging Angel, anyone? and i don't think money means much to Warren. he doesn't live it up very often, from what i've seen; kind of boring actually.
for contrast, Scott started out as a criminal; helping Jack Winters.

O5: Angel - for insider trading/corporate crime
All New, All Different: Storm - not because she's a former thief. I see her comitting lots of civil misdemeanors and destruction of public property during her punk phase!

from the original x-men, angel would be my choice, he'd excel in corporate crimes!
then vulcan
and logically storm, since she began as a pickpocket anyway:)

O5 - Scott. Read Casey's Children of the Atom...
All new all different - Wolverine, heck he's done a shed load of criminal stuff like MURDER as is...
X-men 1.5 - not sure... but there's something about Darwin I don't trust..
