I just picked up the Smax tpb (got it for cheap). I've thus far only read the first Top Ten tpb. Am I going to be lost if I read Smax without reading the rest of Top Ten?
Appreciate any thoughts.
I actually read Smax without reading any of Top Ten, and was able to follow and enjoy it. It's not that heavily connected to Top Ten beyond the two main characters.

No, you should be fine reading it alone. There are a few light references to Top Ten, but all you really need to know is that Robin & Smax are partners on a superhero police force. Other than that, it's pretty self-contained.
Awesome, hilarious book.

Cool. Appreciate it. I plan to get the second Top Ten trade. When I find it at the right price.
I'm cheap.

My favorite thing about Smax is that Top Ten leads directly into it, but it's still mostly self contained.

That right price would be 'free.' The second Top Ten, which Moore didn't write, wasn't that good.

No, Moore wrote two TPBs worth of Top Ten, plus the prequel "49ers". It was the sequel, "Beyond the Farthest Precinct", that he didn't write.

Smax is great. It's basically Shrek, as Alan Moore might have written it. And no, it's not highly dependant on Top Ten, although Top Ten is also very much worth reading.

The two characters in Top Ten that appear in it (Smax and Robin) have a sub plot that leads them to where they are at the start of Smax, but it isn't nessecary reading at all.
Smax is more essential for Top Ten readers than Top Ten is for Smax readers.

I agree about Smax here. I read it a while ago and was dissapointed. The first two top-ten 49ers, and whatever the first one was titled were really interesting, especially the Rumour character. The farthest precinct was more of a standard work (perhaps too structurally standard) not sub-par but not as interesting as the first two. I'm Dying to have some NEW TERRA OBSCURA published. So much So i'm thinking of writing my own version. My favorite character was Doctor X, the guy with that green hood and no face. You could do so many interesting things with him, it's not hard to tell where he's drawn from.
