View Full Version : What do the X-Men sound like?

When I was little, I always found it fun when people would make voices to go along with characters' dialog when reading stories to me. So when I started reading comics I would naturally try put a voice to each of the characters. Do you guys do this when reading the X-Men books?
Specifically, what do the X-Men sound like to you when you're reading a comic book? Has what they sound like to you been influenced by hearing actors voice them on TV or in the movies? When the character you're reading has a differnt accent from you (American, Scottish, Southern, Australian, etc.) do you try to hear the accent when reading their dialog? Have you ever tried to "cast" actors' voices to match up with characters you think would sound like them? Ever try to come up with how any of the alien races might sound (i.e. the Shi'ar)?
Contrastingly, do any of you just read the dialog straight without even trying to "hear" different characters voices?
For example, I first started getting into the X-Men by watching X-men the animated series in the 90's, so that's where I first got an idea of what they all might sound like. Now, I can't read anything Storm says without hearing the booming/majestic she had in that series.

EVERYONE has cartoon voices.
Except Storm who's cartoon voice was frankly ridiculous.
And Xavier who's screams really annoyed me. He's Patrick Stewart.
Rogue, Wolverine, Beast, Cyclops all had amazing voice actors.

I never seem to really audiotize something im reading. Take Psylocke. Never wondered how to say her name when i was a kid, because i just saw the word.
And im still not sure how Braddock is pronouced.
Is it, like "sitting on the Braddock of the bay"
Or is it
Gambit is a real Braddick

Agreed on the cartoon voices. Always thought Wolverine's was spot-on.
Storm's bugged me, too. So did Scott's, sometimes.
And, of course, there's Jean, who rarely said more than, "Too heavy..." before fainting into the arms of the nearest X-man.

I think I liked Beast's voice best on the animated series. It sounded very intelligent, but also had a great quality for Beast's witty humor.

I say it the "of the bay" way, but I had help from the cartoon.
It also helped me figure out how to say Ch'od, M'Kraan, and Shi'ar, all of which would have been butchered by me otherwise.

Of all the butchering done to any comic book character in any media - Jean has got to be the most demeaning and far-reaching. Even now, many cannot get past Jean's terrible mischaracterization in TAS. It is a lingering travesty.

Dude, EVERYONE, noticed that. But then it might have been a ploy by the writers to show how more powerful she becomes when Phoenix-ified.

Lol I love how people bring this up when it comes to TAS but one time, Jean was trying to push a guy or something and over-exerted herself and FELL OFF THE ROOF. LMFAO.
And the time she yelled for 46 minutes at that green thing. Gack.

Everyone who starred in TAS has those voices for me, except for Xavier and Magneto. Those two are Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. (Though I do keep expecting Xavier to order some Earl Grey Tea.)

well, I remember Storm, but i'm trying to forget.
mostly, i can hear the Evolution cast, except for Kitty, which was pretty awful there at the beginning.

Of all the butchering done to any comic book character in any media - Jean has got to be the most demeaning and far-reaching. Even now, many cannot get past Jean's terrible mischaracterization in TAS. It is a lingering travesty.
So true.
Too many fans think of Jean's character in terms of her portrayal in X-Men The Animated Series even though it was WAY off the mark in terms of her personality and power levels.
Jean had a stronger personality during the original X-Men years than she did throughout most of XTAS. The cartoon downplayed her fiery temperment and her lively passionate side. The episode where her and Scott fought the Morlocks and the Phoenix Sagas were the episodes that did her some justice. Jean in XTAS was also for the most part no where near as powerful as she was in X-Factor or the Gold Team.
Too many times I have read or heard fans say of comic book Jean-- that she didn't go on missions and just stood around Xavier. They forget that this was what she often did on the cartoon Not the comics.
The cartoon also caused Jean to be identified as the X-Man without a codename.
In the comics, Jean only went without a codename for about 3 years. It was between october 1991 and august 1994.
I don't think many fans realize this. Except for those 3 years, Jean has always either had Marvel Girl or Phoenix as her official codename.
Yet because of the X-Men the Animated Series, Jean also did not have a codename in X-Men Evolution or the Movies either. Of course a part of that may have been due to Marvel Girl not being that good of a codename. However, it was XTAS that caused Jean to be identified as the X-Man who did not have a codename.
Some Rachel fans still say that Rachel was Phoenix longer than Jean was. While that was true for a time, it isn't quite true anymore. Jean has had the Phoenix codename longer (12/13 years this time and 3 years the first time around). Its debatable concerning the actual power- how do you decide when Jean got the power back (Seagles run and related issues like Wolverine 125? Claremonts Revolution run? X-Men Forever? Morrison's run?) and it also depends if you count her first Phoenix years. Rachel was Phoenix for about 9 years if I remember correctly.

Scott: Like Evolution Scott but older. Kind of.
Charles: Patrick Stewart. HE IS THE ONE!
Storm: I actually liked her voice from Evolution as well. MUCH more so than her TAS voice.
Kitty: I have no real voice for Kitty, mostly because the Evolution voice doesen't fit and she wasn't in TAS (at all?)
Overall I think the Evolution cast was great.
than mi-kran to me, anyway, even if mi-kran is more accurate.

the worst delivered line in X-men cartoon history was in taht primetime episode they did were there was that alien thing that absorbed people. And it got Lady Deathstrike right?
So when the x-men are fighting them the souls, or whatever, of those things it caught would talk to them.
So Deathstrikes line was : "You can;t win Logan"
If only i had a mp3 of that

Although I don't like a lot of the cartoon voices (gambit, storm, etc) I do tend to read them in those voices... My Cyclops is a little more pompous maybe, Wolverine a little more John Wayne...
Beast will always be his '90's cartoon voice to me though!

When I first encountered the animated series most of the character voices from that made it into my head.
Beast, Cyclops, Wolverine, Rogue and Gambit in particular.
And Magneto. At least the first guy to voice him. He had it spot on. I never really saw McKellan as right for Magnus, at all.
Neither was Patrick Stewart right as Xavier, either. Too calm and friendly to fit with the Xavier of the comics. But then from when I started reading the X-Books I always heard Richard O'Brian as Xavier in my head.
I always heard Bishop as Michael Dorn, as well. Doesn't quite fit in more recent years, but it did in the early 90s.
Apocalypse always fitted with the animated series voice, too. And Sinister for that matter.

Lol. No it was more initially that nobody else in the world looks quite so much like Xavier.
http://www.ginosprio.com/_images/Richard+O'Brian_bySprio.jpg
And he has a definite sense of 'Presence' which Patrick Stewart doesn't in the X-movies. He could also convey Xavier's darker side. Stewart's Xavier has no dark side. He's just a cuddly grandpa kind of figure. That's not Xavier.
why is that?
