Back when Bermejo was going to be the artist for Darkness Calls he did a number of awesome Hellboy peices. This is probably my favorite Hellboy peice not done by Mignola. I thought I would give it a simple coloring job to get it a little more attention.

The piece is great. But Hellboy looks like too old...something like Popeye I guess...and his ear is normal like humans have...I like Bermejo, but that face is odd. Correct me if I am wrong:o

No your right the Batman in that looks great but the face just offsets everything it does remind me of Popeye too much for me to really like this picture.

I love bermejo's hellboy stuff, what I have seen so far. I think it is perfect.

I'm not seeing a Popeye resemblance at all. Maybe if both of his forearms were the size of canned hams, and he only had one eye open, then maybe I'd see it.

Nice color choices ZoSo262. You should take it a little further!

I like the coloring job...I am with Lilitu on the art. Hellboy's face doesn't look quite right...

I've allways liked Bermejos Hellboy pinups but althought I like his style I'm very happy that Duncan is doing the job right now. Bermejos style is just too unhellboyish for a regular, mainstream series. He would make a great Abe Sapien series artist, though.

How do you guys... any of you comic artisans out there... draw like THAT!!!???

I'd really like to know! The closest I think i have gotten has been the cutout style and my latest on my Art. Help. Art. thread...

Jeez! I would kill to draw like that!:evilsmile

I suppose now that Lee is no longer scheduled to do the Hellboy mini it's safe to say this. I was never that fond of his version of Hellboy. I've seen Duncan's artwork from the series and I think he's captured the essence of Hellboy much better. No offense to you Lee if you read the messages on this board (which I doubt would be the case), but I'm ultimately a very happy fan that Duncan is now handling the artistic duties.

I'm not a fan of Lee's stuff. I bought Lex Luthor: Man of Steel on a recommendation from a friend, and I thought Bermejo's stuff looked like wet paper bags.

I was honestly thinking of skipping Darkness Calls until Duncan came in.

I didn't even realize there was someone else doing Darkness Calls before Duncan.

Which is interesting but makes this statement all the more appropriate- It's always someone's first time for something. Having been a part of this fan community as long as I have I take for granted that not everyone knows all of the latest Mignola/Hellboy goings on.

As to the comment regarding Bermejo's stuff looking like wet paper bags I'll just say this. I meant no bashing of my own in my comment that preceeded yours (if any was gleaned), and have the utmost respect for Lee's work on it's own merit. It's definitely not my cup of tea, but the guys got talent and it's easy to see why Mike hand picked the guy originally.

I agree. I think, at least for me, sometimes the artist's style doesn't really match the character very well. Its not a commentary on how well they can draw, its just personal preference.

I think that is a good sketch, but I don't think I would want that style in the entire issue of Hellboy.

Those of you who have heard this story,I'll try and make this short. I introduced Mike to Lee about four years ago at the SDDC.Mike liked Lee's art and Lee gave Mike one of his sketchbook(pics to follow)Scott Allie called Lee and Mike wanted Lee to do Darkness Calls. There is no bigger fan of Mike or Hellboy than Lee,so this was a dream come true.Lee was working for DC at the time and had to finish his commitment for the Lex Luthor mini before he could start on Hellboy.Lee and Mike met in New York to go over stuff and all was a go.I had seen some stuff and it looked great. For some reason or another ,they decided to go with Duncan.Lee now lives in Italy.I saw Lee last year at SDDC and wishes nothing but the best for Duncan.I love the pages that Lee did for the minibut I have to say that I love Duncan's work and am excited to see the first issue here is the hellboy sketches from Lee's first sketchbook http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p217/gdeo/panpixs018.jpg

I saw a number of Bermejo Hellboy full pages come out at this time that I thought looked incredible. I saved a few of them. If anyone has any other peices that would be awesome to see them.

Notice how this first page is extremely similar to the one we have from Duncan.

I liked Lee's work as well. I can really appreciate his draftmanship and ink work. I think his tone and mood are right for the HB world, but I can see a stiffness creeping in that I don't think of with hellboy. Even when Mike is drawing the blocky-est of mosters or even HB himself, he puts a lot of action or kenetic build up in his characters and settings. This is where I can see Duncan being a good match also.

I'm thrilled Duncan is in. I wish Lee no ill, but I do not care for his artwork.

The biggest problem with Bermejo's artwork for me is that it's a little bit too detailed and realistic, Hellboy's body included. There's a strange contrast with Hellboy's face which looks more like old Mignola's drawings. In this realistic context his mouth reminds me of The Muppet Show...

Oh, well...I can only say that Barmejo is a "monster"... Watching this pieces, this...masterpieces, I would cry because I love it. The realistic artwork is not too bad for me, it's like to watching a movie. I grow up with Claudio Castellini's artwork(Wolverine: the end), and I can oly love it!!

Good job on the coloring. Im gonna have to agree though that HB's face is a little to worn and scruffy.
