Looks like we'll have a new Rachel. Then again, it wouldn't be a Batman movie franchise without recasting, really.
So who should play the 'new' Rachel?

I don't know, but I'm wondering why she needs to return in the movie at all. I know it was a tradion with the last movies to not mention why they didn't retrun at all (with just a passing comment for Vicki Vale in Batman Returns). I know they want to distance themselves from the Schumacher/Burton movies, but even in regards to this?
I'm guessing she'll show up just to get killed by the Joker, to give Batman an emotional stake in bringing him down.
I'm more interested in "Female Cop - Latin, 30s. Elizabeth Pena type." Montoya perhaps?
And Ed Norton, Josh Lucas, and JAIMIE FOXX are up for considration for Harvey Dent? Hmmm...Jaimie's a long shot, but it would be VERY interesting if he got it.
Finally...I REALLY think they need to make this and the Superman sequel concurrently.

If you mean because he's black, it's not that much of a long shot considering Billy Dee Williams was Harvey Dent in the first Burton movie.

I've already seen the beginning of the if-Harvey-Dent-is-black-can-Montoya-be-white debate.

Well, it states that they want the character to be latina, so any debating on whether or not a white actress could play her would be pointless.
But I agree with Nate. Why bring back the character at all? One, there are those who really didn't care for Holmes performance, and two, I think the character herself is superfluous. Her only purpose seemed to be spouting expository dialogue that the film didn't even need, and at the last minute, decided to make her Bruce's love interest without laying down a foundation for that development. It's assumed, because the classic cliche, especially in comic movies, is that a male character and a female character are obligated to become romantically linked, even if it serves no purpose to the story. Up until the end of Batman Begins, there was nothing to imply that Bruce and Rachel were becoming anything beyond childhood friends.

Holmes had been signed on for a sequel. I'm guessing that she's going to spend a year, or so, with Suri, which isn't outrageous, especially given that she doesn't NEED to work, financially.

She's doing a movie with Queen Latifah.

Does anyone else think they should just drop a Batman love interest from the franchise completely? I mean, what does it really do for the series besides provide filler. Batman doesn't need another motvation to fight crime (Villian kidnapping his girl) HE'S BATMAN! That's what he do.

That's how I feel. One of the VERY FEW redeeming things about Batman and Robin, and I struggle to even consider using the term "redeeming", was the fact that they finally had Bruce going out with a girl just for show. Aside from being under the effects of Ivy's pheramone dust, he wasn't pursuing anyone or falling in love with anyone. He basically had to tell his arm candy, "Look ho, it's no rings for you!"

Hmmmm.... and just what "type" of Latina is Elizabeth Pena?

It cuts down on the Batman-is-gay jokes.
Montoya seems like the kind of role that Michelle Rodriguez would be the go-to girl for, but with all her off-camera troubles I don't know if they should bother.

Awwww, no Penguin. And here I was hoping for a big screen redemption of the character after Batman Returns.
Hmmmm.... and just what "type" of Latina is Elizabeth Pena?
That's what I'm wondering.

When they say "type," they mean Elizabeth Peña, but younger!
Penguin needs no redemption, what Burton did with an otherwise laughable character, was absolutely brilliant, which is why, of those 4 films, it's the absolute best!

Yeah Batman Returns is my favorite. Tough I'd probably like even more if it was just a Batman/Catwoman story.
Why do they need to recast Rachel? Can't they just have a completely new love interest (or none at all).

I've always said that Dawes should return and be killed by The Joker in pretty gruesome fashion in the first third of the movie. It could really set the mood that this isn't Nicholson's mischievous Joker and would set up an interesting theme of revenge, something integral to the character.
I also REALLY like Ed Norton for Harvey Dent.

But that doesn't address the issue of why they singled out Pena's "type" (whatever that is) as opposed to naming one of the other (and younger) Latina actresses. (In other words, how/in what way is her "type" different than Jessica Alba's or Roselyn Sanchez's?) Besides, it says right at the beginning of the description that they're looking for an actress in her 30s. So, given that Pena is in her mid-40's, it goes without saying they were looking for someone younger.

if they get another 'Rachel,' i hope they cast Jennifer Connelly. as for Harvey Dent, i'd go with Clive Owen.

He's more than just Batman. He's also Bruce Wayne. Which means he likes making money, having fun and dating women like 96% of the male population.
Personally I have no idea why they are bringing back the Rachel character in the first place. I found her more and more annoying with each viewing, with her shrill sanctimonious preaching. I don't know that many people who loved her or who thought she was essential to the plot. I was really hoping that they would bring Talia Head into this film, as some sort of revenge element for what happened to her father.
And I hope to God that the 'ethnic' casting they are keen on has something to do with the film rather than 'political correctness'.

Katie Holmes was never even mentioned for the second one. Bale, Caine, and Freeman all signed for three. Katie Holmes was only signed for the 'Batman Begins' and Nolan said that there would be revolving female interests for Bruce like in the comics. I don't expect the character to even be mentioned in the 'Dark Knight'.

why bring her back
Seem her story did in transition
There so many other love interestes
talia- this would be a good film transition with Ra Al Ghul
Vesper
Vicky
The white haired chick
Selina kyle

Bruce shouldnt have a love interest for Dark Knight. They should just show him with numerous hot women throughout the course of the movie and give the women no lines or character development. Like the 2 chicks that were with Bruce when he bought the hotel in Begins.
why bring her back
The white haired chick
You mean Silver St. Cloud? Yeah she'd be great.

Running the risk of becoming a comic book actress... what about Rosario Dawson as Montoya?

You mean one of the two Burton movies they're trying to distance themselves from and practically disown? Those?
Yeah, main reason why I think its long shot (probably the same reason there's no Penguin in this sequel). But I'd still like to see it happen. All the other choices are too...obvious, though Norton would make a great Riddler, I think. But probably won't see HIM either for the same reason.

I agree, Dawson would make a great Montoya (or Catwoman, for that matter). For Two-Face, I think Affleck would do a good job. He could pull off the vanity/arrogance of Harvey Dent pretty well.
Plus, if you stick Bale, Ledger, and Affleck in a movie, you'll probably up the number of women going to see it.

Yes it does. They want someone who looks, acts, talks, walks, and sounds like Elizabeth Peņa, except 20 years younger. Circa "Down & Out in Beverly Hills."

She's already a comic book writer, plus I'm guaranteed a couple of viewings in the theatres if it stars Rosario Dawson too.

Yeah.. but i'm just thinking she was in Sin City, MiB2, Clerks 2 (while not a comic book movie the first one became a comic and cartoon and the whole heaven Kevin Smith thing)
Gotta comic book movie... hire Rosario Dawson..

Or, they could repeat the past: cast Jamie Foxx as Dent, and then when the acid hits him, voila! James Garner!
