Would anyone besides me, be surprised to see that Gene Colan drew a series for Archie?
Anyone ever see this:

I had no idea either, until I read about it in the Colan biography.
I blogged about the book it late '05. A great read for any Colan fan.

I recall an occasional Colan issue here and there but it seemed like it was only for a brief period. It was easy to see that it was Colan even though he adapted his style to make the characters fit their expected looks.

I shouldn't be surprised by this, but I still tend to label artists in certain categories.
I remember in the 70s, when it was announced that Gene would take over Howard the Duck from Frank Brunner, I was shocked. I thought, how could an old guy like Colan(tho I had no idea of his age) who only knew how to draw Dracula, draw a funny animal satire like Howard? Only young hip guys like Brunner could draw a book like HtD.:o
I couldn't have been more wrong.

I remember when it was announced he was doing work for Archie. I felt a little sad, because it sounded like he was being "put out to pasture" and Archie Comics were the only ones that would give him a job. Hopefully Colan had a better outlook than I did on the situation; I now like to think he enjoyed the change of pace.

I love it! Morgan Le Fay reminds me of ToD villain Torgo! If only there was more mist and moody dark pencils.....

I couldn't have been more wrong. Those first few issues inked by Steve Leialoha (sp?) are among the very best things Colan ever drew IMO. He was so well suited to that series, with its emphasis on characters and everday city-scapes. Does anyone know if the newspaper strip he and Gerber did has ever been collected? I've never read any of those.
