Another excellent issue. I'm still amazed that this book has reached issue 57 and is more compelling to me now than at any other time in its run. Most creator owned Vertigo books are limping to the finish line at this issue count, but Fables just keeps getting better.
I've always enjoyed Mike Allred's work, but this is the first time it didn't have an "intentionally kitchsy" feel to it since Dead Air (to be fair, I haven't read The Golden Plates). I credit a lot of that to Laura's muted colors; the "hyper-retro" pallette, while great for most of Allred's projects, just wouldn't have fit in here. A top-notch fill-in for the always exceptional Mark Buckingham.
I'm also glad that stories from 1001 Nights of Snowfall are being referenced in the monthly book. I made the mistake of calling it Fables: Secret Files and Origins when it first came out, but like the best of those special issues, it has actually a vital role in the unfolding continuity of the series.
Bring on Bigby and the pact taking down the cave trolls!
