View Full Version : Classic Comics Trivia #6
Lone Ranger

OK - This quiz went on hiatus at the end of last year. Cei-U! was the most recent winner, but he gave me the green light to launch a new set of questions.
Here how this works.
Answer as many questions as you can - DO NOT look at other replies before posting your answers.
Answer only once - DO NOT not edit your answers at a later time.
DO NOT use the internet for help. That will suck all of the fun out of it, as these will be easy to answer.
There are 2000 possible points at stake. I have tried to distribute points according to difficulty but that's in the eye of the beholder.
The contest closes Sunday at 5:00 PM EST, and I'll tally the points and report back Monday morning.
The winner may either to create 10 new questions or throw it back to me.
Here we go. Good luck and have fun.
1. Most fans know that Jack Kirby and Jim Steranko worked on the early issues of Captain America’s solo title before Gene Colan set up shop for an extended run. There were, however, two issues after post-Steranko and pre-Colan pencilled by two different artists. Who were they? (100 points each)
2. One of the following villains or villain groups did not appear in the pages of The Champions, which one? (100 points):
a. The Stranger
b. The Wrecking Crew
c. The Sentinels
d. Crimsom Dynamo & Titanium Man
3. Several ‘features’ from DC’s Showcase shared a name with series published by other companies. For example if Marvel's “The Defenders”, had actually been launched in Showcase – it would share a name with Dell’s adaptation of The Defenders TV show. I can think of four – how many can you name? (100 points each):
4. Match the mid-70s DC title with the number of issues it lasted (300 points):
a) Beowulf b)Kong the Untamed c)Stalker d) Claw the Unconquered
i)6 ii)12 iii)5 iv)4
5. Place the following title in order of cancellation (first cancelled to last cancelled) (200 points):
a. Captain Marvel Jr
b. Captain Marvel Adventures
c. Marvel Family
d. Master Comics
6. Name the sidekick of the following Golden Age heroes (100 points each):
a. Black Terror
b. Amazing Man
c. Black Cat
d. The Flame (Fox)
7. Justice League of America #200 was an all-star collaboration – name as many of the 8 pencillers (one is a breakdown/finished art team) who worked on this book as you can. (50 points each)
That's it!

2. One of the following villains or villain groups did not appear in the pages of The Champions, which one? (100 points):
a. The Stranger
b. The Wrecking Crew
c. The Sentinels
d. Crimsom Dynamo & Titanium Man
Well, I never read much 'Champions', but I'm going to guess The Sentinals, despite the X-Men connections in that team.
That's a good question. Sadly, I have no answer.
4. Match the mid-70s DC title with the number of issues it lasted (300 points):
a) Beowulf b)Kong the Untamed c)Stalker d) Claw the Unconquered
i)6 ii)12 iii)5 iv)4
Just guessing here...
a) Beowulf - 4
b) Kong the Untamed - 6
c) Stalker - 5
d) Claw the Unconquered - 12
5. Place the following title in order of cancellation (first cancelled to last cancelled) (200 points):
a. Captain Marvel Jr
b. Captain Marvel Adventures
c. Marvel Family
d. Master Comics
d. Master Comics
b. Captain Marvel Adventures
c. Marvel Family
a. Captain Marvel Jr
?
6. Name the sidekick of the following Golden Age heroes (100 points each):
a. Black Terror
b. Amazing Man
c. Black Cat
d. The Flame (Fox)
I got nothing.
7. Justice League of America #200 was an all-star collaboration – name as many of the 8 pencillers (one is a breakdown/finished art team) who worked on this book as you can. (50 points each)
George Perez
Carmine Infantino
Gil Kane
Brian Bolland
Dick Giordano
Jim Aparo
...and that's all I can come up with at the moment. I think that means I'm missing the Superman & Martian Manhunter features... and I don't have a clue who did those.
About halfway through this I remembered that I generally suck at this game... oh well. Nice to see it return, regardless of my continual poor showing.

I have no clue on most of these.
3. Several ‘features’ from DC’s Showcase shared a name with series published by other companies. BTW - if the George Perez section is the one where you're looking for a breakdowns/finishes collaboration, I'm pretty sure the finisher was Brett Breeding.
Oh, and thanks for the encouragement, LR. I should really get off my ass & get back to Toronto sometime so we can grab a coffee or a drink or something... I always end up suggesting things like this, and then I don't get around to hitting the city to follow through....

Sure thing - next time you are coming to town, give me a shout.
If you are hanging with your friends in the west end, we can grab a beer on Dundas or Roncesvalles.

I'll just have to guess four Showcase features: Dolphin, Sea Devils, Power Girl, The Atom
4. Match the mid-70s DC title with the number of issues it lasted (300 points):
a) Beowulf - 5

I've got the fill-in artists from Suspense stuck in my mind. Based on who I think was around at the time, I'll guess Sal Buscema and Gil Kane (again; I think he was one of the TOS short-termers on Cap).
2. One of the following villains or villain groups did not appear in the pages of The Champions, which one? (100 points):
a. The Stranger
b. The Wrecking Crew
c. The Sentinels
d. Crimsom Dynamo & Titanium Man
I can picture all of them except b, the Wrecking Crew, so that's my final answer.
Frogmen, definitely.
Firehair? This seems to ring a bell as a title from somebody else in the 1950s.
G.I. Joe was probably used as a title for some other war comic before DC used it.
Adventures on Other Worlds is the only other one I can think of that might have been used by another publisher.
4. Match the mid-70s DC title with the number of issues it lasted (300 points):
a) Beowulf : iii)5
b)Kong the Untamed : i)6
c)Stalker : iv)4
d) Claw the Unconquered : ii)12
5. Place the following title in order of cancellation (first cancelled to last cancelled) (200 points):
a. Captain Marvel Jr
d. Master Comics
b. Captain Marvel Adventures
c. Marvel Family
I know Marvel Family was one of the last cancellations, anyway. Seems like it outlast Cap's solo, wrong though it seems.
6. Name the sidekick of the following Golden Age heroes (100 points each):
a. Black Terror: Tim, I think
b. Amazing Man: Somebody's sidekick had to have been named Rusty, so I'll give it a try here. Random guess.
c. Black Cat : Kitty is as good a guess as any.
d. The Flame (Fox) : I don't know...Flame Lad?
7. Justice League of America #200 was an all-star collaboration – name as many of the 8 pencillers (one is a breakdown/finished art team) who worked on this book as you can. (50 points each)
Jim Aparo, Pat Broderick, Dick Giordano, George Perez, Joe Kubert, Gil Kane...

1. John Romita, and John Buscema - like I would get this one, especially since one is also a "jb"
2.Champions? What's that? I'll guess b. the wrecking crew 'cause I think they might be a later abiration of the Marvel Universe.
3. Robin Hood, Avengers (er no wait that's a Marvel Comical Book), Scarecrow (oops still Marvel)... Ohhh Boy! I really have to go back and review the Showcase comics.
4. Beowulf 5
Kong 4
Stalker 6
Claw 12
5. Ouch, this one I have no idea of, so these are all guesses
Master Comics
Marvel Family
Captain Marvel Jr
Captain Marvel Adventures
6. More guessing - but I should be shot here cause I use to know them all
Black Terror and Timmy
Amazing Man - ???
Black Cat and - ??? er it's a Harvey Comic. I remember that anyway.
The Flame(Fox) and Flame Girl(Crow)
7. I think I have this comical book. But if I do, its been in storage for so long I don't even remember the cover, so this is all guesses and they are mainly based on who I remember working at DC at the time which I think it came out in the early 80s or so. Dick Giordano, Dick Dillon, maybe some George Perez snuck in there, and perhaps Gil Kane stopped by. Did they manage to pull Mike Sekowsky in for some honorary pages along with Carmine Infantino? Last guess would be Joe Kubert simple because there had to be a Hawkman segment in there somewhere. Oops one more, Don Heck maybe and perhaps.

Here are the answers to the quiz:
1. Most fans know that Jack Kirby and Jim Steranko worked on the early issues of Captain America’s solo title before Gene Colan set up shop for an extended run. There were, however, two issues after post-Steranko and pre-Colan pencilled by two different artists. Who were they? (100 points each)
Johns Buscema and Romita (Sr. natch)
2. One of the following villains or villain groups did not appear in the pages of The Champions, which one? (100 points):
b. The Wrecking Crew
I found this to be odd - as the WC show up everywhere in the 70s
I came up with the following:
Frogmen, Firehair, I Spy, GI Joe
The James Bond ish was actually entitled 'Dr. No' - and although there may have been some British or other overseas book with that titles, everyone know they don't count as actual comics.:p
4. Match the mid-70s DC title with the number of issues it lasted (300 points):
a) Beowulf (6) b)Kong the Untamed (5) c)Stalker (4) d) Claw the Unconquered (12)
5. Place the following title in order of cancellation (first cancelled to last cancelled) (200 points):
Master Comics
Captain Marvel Jr
Captain Marvel Adventures
Marvel Family
6. Name the sidekick of the following Golden Age heroes (100 points each):
a. Black Terror - Tim (although I accepted Timmy)
b. Amazing Man - (Tommy the) Amazing Boy
c. Black Cat - Kit (I accepted Kitty and Kitten, I think)
d. The Flame (Fox) (Flame Girl)
7. Justice League of America #200 was an all-star collaboration – name as many of the 8 pencillers (one is a breakdown/finished art team) who worked on this book as you can. (50 points each)
Perez/Breeding (I gave full points for just Perez), Pat Broderick, Jim Aparo, Dick Giordano, Gil Kane, Carmine Infantino, Brian Bolland, Joe Kubert.

Kurt, if you'd like - the next round is yours. If not, feel free to hand the baton back to me and I'll try to get something new up.
Okay, gimme a day.

The only one I'm really irritated at myself for getting wrong (though it's more than offset, I guess, by my utter guess of Romita & Buscema on Capt America being correct) is the *choke* lifespan of Stalker, since I actually own those.

Man, talk about one of those things not being like the others ... Pat Broderick just doesn't seem to have lasted as a penciller with an "all-star" rep, or at least that's my impression -- god knows I was away for long enough that I could be totally wrong.
I liked his stuff a lot, myself (first place I really noticed him may well have been the first ish of Atlas/Seaboard's Planet of the Vampires, if memory serves), but 25 years after JLA 200, I don't think he's generally ranked particularly high on too many lists. Maybe he was insufficiently prolific &/or got out of the biz too soon, or something ...

I like Pat Broderick in certain cases as well such as his work on Captain Marvel and Legion of Superheroes but completely failed to recall him doing anything at all on JLA even if its just 1 chapter. Broderick has always struck me as a penciller whose work is an acquired taste - I can recall a lot of titles he worked on but none where I can say he was my favourite artist (with the possible exception of Firestorm)

I know that Broderick worked at Continuity for a bit in the 70s.
I remember reading somewhere that they wanted Sekowsky to contribute to the book, but it just didn't work out.
Perhaps Giordano suggested bringing Broderick in at the last minute.

I though Sekowsky had passed away by that time.
The lineup is pretty impressive (Broderick was considered an a-list artist at the time). I'm pretty sure they gave each artist a full-page splash.

I think Broderick was drawing Firestorm's own book at the time, so it made sense for him to draw the Firestorm vs. Martian Manhunter segment. Not a lot of other choices available if they wanted an artist previously associated with one or the other character. Was original Martian Manhunter artist Joe Certa still around at the time? That would've been cool.

I knew Sekowsky was alive (and wrongly guessed him) because he later drew the first JLA issue I ever read - Justice League of America #240.

Yup, that's right. Sekowsky passed away later in the decade.
I can't remember what kept him from participating in #200 - I know that I've read about it somewhere.

Okay, I've just realised that I'm almost a week late, but just for fun:
1. Most fans know that Jack Kirby and Jim Steranko worked on the early issues of Captain America’s solo title before Gene Colan set up shop for an extended run. There were, however, two issues after post-Steranko and pre-Colan pencilled by two different artists. Who were they? (100 points each)
John Romita (educated guess)
Don Heck (guess)
2. One of the following villains or villain groups did not appear in the pages of The Champions, which one? (100 points):
a. The Stranger
b. The Wrecking Crew
c. The Sentinels
d. Crimsom Dynamo & Titanium Man
The Wrecking Crew (a guess)
Frogmen (Dell 1960s)
Firehair (Fiction House 1940s)
G. I. Joe (Marvel 1980s)
4. Match the mid-70s DC title with the number of issues it lasted (300 points):
a) Beowulf b)Kong the Untamed c)Stalker d) Claw the Unconquered
i)6 ii)12 iii)5 iv)4
a) Beowulf - 6
b)Kong the Untamed - 5
c)Stalker - 4
d) Claw the Unconquered - 12
5. Place the following title in order of cancellation (first cancelled to last cancelled) (200 points):
d. Master Comics
b. Captain Marvel Adventures
a. Captain Marvel Jr
c. Marvel Family
6. Name the sidekick of the following Golden Age heroes (100 points each):
a. Black Terror
b. Amazing Man - I’m going to foolishly stick my neck out and guess Amazing Boy
c. Black Cat - Kitten
d. The Flame (Fox)
No idea on the other two, though I swear I’ve seen the name of the Black Terror’s sidekick somewhere on the web…
7. Justice League of America #200 was an all-star collaboration – name as many of the 8 pencillers (one is a breakdown/finished art team) who worked on this book as you can. (50 points each)
Brian Bolland
George Perez
Mike Sekowsky
Dick Dillin
Don Heck
Ross Andru
Gene Colan
Jose Delbo
Some of these are guesses (okay - some of these guesses are more informed than others…)

I don't believe this. I have just totted up the points I would've got. One thousand.
Good Lord! Choke!
Let this be a lesson unto me.
Re: Showcase - there was a U. K. Classics Illustrated featuring Dr. No, which does not count as you specifically said a series; had you included British series, Sgt. Rock would have got me a hundred points here, but I assumed you weren't.
Next time I shall be more alert. :o

I believe the British Classics Illustrated, and the SHOWCASE Dr. No are the same comic. I think DC just reprinted it. I know we've discussed this on the board before.

They are indeed the same, CJ. I recently finally got the chance to read that Showcase, and I can't imagine what DC's regular readers thought at the time! Mixed-case, mechanical-looking text, sedate story-telling, and...ugh...the art, with poor attempts to render Sean Connery as Bond. This may just be the worst issue of Showcase ever; I think the Binky one is probably more readable than this!

It's not an exact reprint, though. The black characters are all colored white in the Showcase version and their dialogue rewritten to remove their Caribbean accents.

I did not know this. Thanx for the info. Do you have the British edition?
