View Full Version : Who are the top ten anime heroines?

Gumbo Maximillian
08-22-2004, 02:32 PM
Sailor Moon
Lain
Washu
A-Ko and B-ko; they are a pair so listed as one, that and from same show
Zeiram

Thats the total that comes to mind right now and my brain goes on the blank when I try to think of more that would fit.

MKTerra
08-22-2004, 02:38 PM
I believe you mean Iria; Zeiram's the monster.

...or is Zeiram female?

I'll add Hikaru Shidou, of Magic Knight Rayearth.

Wonder Bebs
08-22-2004, 02:53 PM
I'll add:

Kei from Akira.

Nami from One Piece.

Android 18 from DBZ

And, I'd add Mince from Excel Saga, but, she's a puppy and I don't supposed she'd count.

Gumbo Maximillian
08-22-2004, 02:56 PM
Yeah its Iria; hmmm, I guess Zeiram technically gives birth to monsters (its been a little since I've seen the show correct me if I'm wrong) so it could be classified as female I suppose.

Linda Inverse from Slayers could round out as number ten.

Sanagi

There is no way that Nausicaa doesn't make number one.

Other than that, let's see... I'm not sure if I can rank them, but here's a bunch more. The Dirty Pair, Nadia, A-ko, Faye Valentine, Motoko Kusanagi, Juna(Earth Maiden Arjuna), Haruhara Haruko, Maetel, Naomi Armitage, Hitomi(Escaflowne), Rei Ayanami, Asuka Souryu, Kiki(Kiki's Delivery Service), San(Mononoke Hime), Utena, Sailor Moon et al, Lum, Devil Hunter Yohko...

You'd call Haru Haru Haruko a Heroine? She's one or two steps over the line in the *other direction* in my opinion. Not evil by any means, but certainly not a heroine. 80% of what she does in the show turns out to be trouble, including almost flattening the universe, and in the end she fought with Naota/Atomsk (in the end I'd say Naota is the protagonist and Haru, for all her niceness to him, is ultimately the antagonist).

Sanagi
08-22-2004, 04:25 PM
I don't think it's possible to classify Haruko simply as a protagonist or antagonist. You could say much the same for Maetel... Anyway, I was just brainstorming.

Do Birdy (although, technically she's half male) from Birdy the Mighty and Gally from Battle Angel qualify?

Also, let's not forget Cutey Honey!

Anon_me
08-22-2004, 04:53 PM
Not all of these are heroines in the strictest sense...

Lum
Creamy Mami
Kyoko Otonashi
Kasumi Tendo
Fujiko
Sailor Venus
Sailor Mars
Sailor Neptune
Sailor Mercury

Ohh, good point! I would nominate Alita, from the Battle Angel Alita mangas :)

Tuan
08-22-2004, 04:55 PM
So is it really Gally or Alita?

Siegzon
08-22-2004, 04:58 PM
1. Tohru Honda
2. The lil girl who saved her parents from being pigs
3. Nuku-Nuku
4. Beldandy
5. Naru Narugasawa
6. Ryoko
7. LAIN
8. Akane Tendo
9. Trixie :D
10. Kaolla Su

Honorable Mention:
The Puma Twins (okay, not heroes but they rock)

Bonus points if you can name each anime :)

It's Alita in the mangas (don't think the name Gally was ever used there, though her original name was Yoko). Dunno much about the anime myself.

What definition of heroine are we going by here exactly? As in protagonist or as in genuinely heroic? Anyway these are my choices in order, based only on anime I'm familiar with of course.

1. Utena Tenjou

2. Lina Inverse

3. Usagi Tsukino

4. Hikaru Shidou

5. Kagome Higurashi

6. Sakura Kinomoto

7. A-ko Magami

8. Robin Sena

9. Eclair

10. Asuka Langley Soryu

I am shocked and outraged no one has mentioned Yomiko Readman yet.

Though for my list Nausicaa likely ranks number one, with Utena a close second. (Assuming we are rating them on their heroic merits, and not how much we like the characters).

English titles OK?

In order:
1. Fruits Basket
2. Spirited Away
3. All Purpose Cultural Cat-Girl Nuku Nuku
4. Oh! My Goddess
5. Love Hina
6. Tenchi Muyo! is what I would guess going from your other choices. I can think of a few others, though.
7. Serial Experiments LAIN (Iwakura Lain)
8. Ranma 1/2
9. Now this one is hard... No, that's Pixie Misa.... actually, this is the only one I cannot think of off the top of my head.
10. Love Hina again.

Hon. Men: Normally "Dominion Tank Police", though they pop-up in the background in "Ghost in the Shell".

For my own, going by "heroine" rather than "female protagonist". In other words, "I Need a Hero" starts playing and they enter the room.

1. Princess Nausciaa, daughter of Jhil, of the Valley of the Wind (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - manga). Just read the series. If you need something, well.... in the English translation, after her father passes away, Nausicaa is never referred to as Queen Nausicaa. She's the KING.

2. Tenjou Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena - anime). Managed to do what she set off to do in the first place. No one else ever pulled that off in that series, and she was willing to pay for it. Even did.

3. Oscar Francois de Jarjeyes (Rose of Versailles - anime). In uniform, she's the toughest would-be bishonen in the nearly-spot-on historical France. In a dress, she's a Greek goddess. Just a great character.

4. Honda Tohru (Fruits Basket - manga). Admittedly, I have only read five volumes. Normal humans cannot do what she does and remain so happy, and everyone else in the series knows that. Kind of a passive heroine.

5. Shindou Hikaru (Magic Knights Rayearth - anime). Did her best, felt like she failed. Tried again, got in a fight with god when she did not like the outcome again, and won. Do I really have to go on?

6. Ahiru (Princess Tutu - anime). In episode three, she's told that if she tells the person she loves that she loves him, she will disappear in a flash of light. In this sort of world, this is literal. She still sticks it out, deals with fate, fights a monster crow, and helps make ballet look cool.

7. Sasara (Legend of Basara - manga). Forced to take up the slack when her twin brother, destined to unite Japan and overthrow the Emperor. Another strong woman who works well in her series.

8. Kanna (20th Century Boys). Unites the two largest Mafia in Tokyo with the homeless after pulling off a few minor miracles to try and save the world. If it wasn't for the fact that Friend is a plotter on par with Dr. Doom on his best day, she might have pulled it off.

9. Queen Emeraldas (Leiji Matsumoto's works). If for no other reason then the fact that she can do an old fashion Western shoot-out at high noon against an advanced space fighter, and win after giving the thing the first shot.

10. Chise (Saikano - anime). She tried. She tried so, so hard. Enough to actually make a place on this list. I also love the series, so I am biased.

Honorable Mentions: the Daicon Girl (Daicon III & IV - anime), Rally Vincent (Gunsmith Cats - manga), Priss (Bubblegum Crisis - anime), Sister Rosette (Chrno Crusade - anime, since I have seen more of it), Yomiko Readman (R.O.D. manga, anime, and OVA), Gally (Gunnm or Battle Angel Alita - manga), and Ginga (Like the Clouds, Like the Wind - anime). Couple of others, but these stand out.

The Drunkard Kid

In no particular order...

Gally (Gunnm/Battle Angel Alita), Nami (One Piece), Lina Inverse (Slayers), Rally Vincent (Gunsmith Cats), Madoka Ayukawa (Kimagure Orange Road), Kagome Higurashi (Inu Yasha), the Original Kikyo (Inu Yasha), Fuuko Kirisawa (Flame of Recca), Kagerou (Flame of Recca), and rounding off with Excel (Excel Saga), just cause she's too funny and incompetent to be a villain.

OverMaster

Lime, Cherry and Bloodberry. Willing to sacrifice themselves two times to save a planet. Why, we even should add Marine and the reformed Tiger, Panther and Luchs to the list...

Sango and Kagome.

And Sasami/Magical Girl Pretty Sammy. And Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne.

Well, which girl from Saikano?

Akemi was the friend. Chise was the girlfriend. Fuyumi was the older woman. Satomi was the little sister. Yukari was the one who lost her boyfriend the first episode.

Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell) - All-around badass
Boogiepop (Boogiepop Phantom) - All-around epythome of gothic coolness
Lum (Lum) - All-around babe you´d want if she was real
Nausicaa (Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind) - flygirl!!
Gin-Rei (Giant Robo) - She did wuss out on me on the last half of the series, but I just plain love her
Noah Izumi (Patlabor) - No otaku can resist a girl who´s into mecha
Sophia (Last Exile) - What can I say, I´m a sucker for the teacher-type
Sugar (Tiny snow fairy sugar) - The most sute, cudly chibi character in anime history: Waffo!!!
Monsley (Future Boy Conan) - Bad girls in uniform with an attitude rule
Faye Valkentine (Cowboy Bebop) - Do I even need to explain why?

Zun Liako

Definetely the Major from GITS, people who have barely watched any anime at all can identify her over most people. She is just way to kick ass.

Rei Ayanami. So she doesn't have any super powers, but hey, she can pilot a huge robot who can kill almost anything

1) Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell)
2) Nausicaa (Nausicca Valley of the Winds)
3) Deunan (Appleseed)
4) Niko Robin (One Piece)
5) Kiki (Kiki's Delivery Service)
6) Utena Tenjou (Revolutionary Girl Utena)
7) Asuka (Evangellion)
8) Maya Natsume (Tenjou Tenge)
9) Yomiko (R.O.D TV)
10) Ed (Cowboy Bebop)

It's curious that everyone keeps mentioning Faye Valentine from CBBbop, because other than having big jugs, she didn't accomplish a lot. She got the team into trouble more times than actually accomplishing heroic feats. In fact, Edward (albeit bizarre) saved the group more often. Plus Ed is one of my all time favorite characters, so I think she deserves a spot on the list. Sort of like Asuka vs. Rei. Sure Rei was cool, but she also was the major cause for all of the destruction (the darker subplot to the series). Asuka has more memorable feats of heroics, and her action scenes in her Eva (in my humble opinion) were the best of the entire series.

Also, Deunan is about the coolest female hero ever. The only reason I didn't place her on top is that she is little known, but she kicked major butt in the new 3-D Appleseed movie. I hope they will hurry up and release it in the U.S.

My runner up vote would go to Nami from One Piece. She's intelligent and a genuine leader, but doesn't have a truely worthy power to save everyone. Just for her strong female persona though, she deffinately deserves a spot; for her cunning alone. However, it is Niko Robin, who is mysterious and intelliegent, who gets my vote. She saves our favorite crew of pirates more times than I can count! Hitomi from Escaflowne, closely followed by Bell Dandy from Oh! My Goddess would be secondary runners up.

Pika!

The anime.

SPOILERS ABOUND

Albeit a really weird one, "Françoise" is pretty much accepted as a girl throughout the series.
Sure, the other characters may have trouble admitting it sometimes, due to her strange behavior (which I blame solely on the environment since anyone who watched CB knows that nothing good has ever came out of Earth ;) ), but they eventually come around to it.
I mean, there´s even an episode where she poses as Jet´s daughter.

And of course we have her father who shows up later on in the anime to give the final saying.

2. Jun Honoo - Great Mazinger/ Mazinkaiser.
3. Major Motoko Kusanagi - Ghost In The Shell.

Nausicaa (of the Valley of Wind)
Kiki ('s Delivery Service)
Chihiro Ogino (Spirited Away)
The entire cast of Azumanga Daioh
Fujiko Mine (Lupin III)

Also, regarding the Gally/Alita thing. . . her name was "Gally" in the original Japanese manga. When ADV picked up the anime, they used her original name, but when Viz started translating the manga, they decided to change the name to "Alita." So there you go.

farovite females or favorite females who do heroic things?

hummmm well one who could be classed as a hero (and who you can probably uess from my tagline) is andou mahoro

but to be honest there are far too many and i hate tryin to put the into any sort of preferential order as i love each of them for who they are

also i tend to like slightly evil girls and some of the better supporting charactors (in CCS i love tomoyo far more than sakura and Morino Ichigo *my avatar* is quite a small roll in onegai teacher/twins)

I hate most anime heroines, so it should be interesting to see if I can get to ten. In no real order;

1. Lina Inverse- Slayers
2. Utena- Revolutionary Girl Utena. Juri may work as well...
3. Usagi Tsukino- Sailor Moon
4. San- Princess Mononoke
