View Full Version : Hellboy: Sword of Storms DVD Review

I will avoid any major spoilers about the DVD, but there might be some minor ones. I won't talk about the plot of the movie at all, though, just about the special features. If I feel that I'm getting at all spoilery, I will forewarn.
Anyway...
Congratulations, Tad. The Hellboy: Sword of Storms DVD is pretty awesome. Like Tad promised us here and on his blog, it's packed with special features, and they're all good.
"To Hell And Back - How Mike Mignola Created Hellboy" is far more than just a Q&A between Tad and Mike. It's a fully produced documentary with contributions from both of them, as well as GDT, Scott Allie and others. Mike is interviewed in what appears to be his actual library. We can't read the titles on the books, but I'm jealous of the sheer number of volumes alone! All neatly organized on nice wooden shelves as opposed to stacked everywhere like my books are in my apartment. This featurette is the best telling yet of the origins of the Hellboy comic and character, even better than the part of the amazing documentary on the Hellboy movie DVD that dealt with that. It tells the story we're all familiar with around here, but also adds lots of choice nuggets that haven't made it into other documentaries or published interviews before. (Though I have heard Mike share some of this before in live Q&A's.) Really well done.
"A New Breed: Creating The New Hellboy" deals with Cheeks' designs (and all the rejected designs) for Hellboy and his cronies. Cheeks talks a lot, and there's good information about his background.
"Conquering Hellboy: The Actor's Role" is a fascinating look at all of the actors in the recording studio. (And Tad directing them.) Ron looks like he's having a great time, miming the punches that Hellboy's throwing in the movie. Selma (who looks greathere, by the way), claims she doesn't like the sound of her voice, but goes on to give a great performance. And Doug, showman that he is, camps it up big time (in a good way!) for the camera. It's also cool to see Peri Gilpin in person, since we don't know her from the movie. Also, Futurama's Phil LaMarr (sp?) does a great job explaining the different choices a voice actor has to convey his character in speech alone.
"A View From The Top: The 'Heads' Sequence" is a close look at the process of adapting Mike's story "Heads" into animation. Using this (probably the best sequence in the movie) as a microcosm for the whole thing, it gives us a good idea of what went into making this thing. We also get to hear from writer Matt Wayne.
"Hellboy Goes East" consists of serveral short featurettes on different aspects of making Sword of Storms. You can watch these all together, or "follow the fox" while watching the movie, pushing a button on your remote and branching off into the bit that deals with what you're watching. In addition to Tad and Mike, we hear from many others involved in the production, including storyboard artists and the composer, Christopher Drake. (He's got a Sideshow RHOD and an Electric Tiki LoJo in his studio.)
Finally, there's a commentary from Mike, Tad and director Phil Weinstein. To give a few examples of how insightful and must-listen it is, I'm going to venture into the realm of commentary spoilers here. I can't imagine there are too many people who can have a commentary spoiled for them, and I'm not going to give any big twist away like, "Tad and Mike turn out to be the same person!" or anything, but I am going to reveal just a few of the many great chunks of information they share with us. So turn back if you want to hear it with completely virgin ears, but keep reading if you want a good idea of what you're in for.
Mike reveals some details of that Kappa story we were promised years ago as a back-up in Monkey Man & O'Brien, and it sounds like it would have been awesome. Too bad it never happened. Still, I'm glad to finally know for sure what that story was about the peculiar creature who liked cucumbers, since I think we eventually got all the other stories in other places. (The heads, the dragon... what was the fourth one? I can't remember.) Speaking of the Kappa, Tad reveals that he is its voice (as well as a few other voices).
I was confused watching the movie on TV by the dragon sequence because it seemed like the same dragon was in South America and China. Turns out I'm not alone; it was a mistake, as Tad confesses.
This one I wouldn't dare spoil, but in the best bit on the commentary, Mike reveals who he based fan-favorite Kate on. It's someone in this very forum, and having had the pleasure of meeting her several times I can totally see it! I can't remember hearing this before, but maybe he's said it.
Oh, yeah, and there's the movie, too, in addition to all these extras. It's the same as the TV version (as far as I can tell), but it looks GREAT. And, personally, I liked it even better seeing it again.
There are also previews for the Hellboy video game and the second Hellboy animated feature, Blood and Iron. It's a longer trailer than the one that's already online, and it looks positively AMAZING. I liked Sword of Storms, but this one looks way better!
And there's the comic book, of course, "Phantom Limbs." It's a good enough story, but it doesn't really feel "Mignola" or "animated Hellboy" to me. More like an extended Weird Tales, but one of the better ones. Mike's pin-up at the end is great (of course), and he has fun playing with his usual signature style.
All in all, a great DVD, and a very promising start to what I hope turns into a long ongoing series. Thanks, Tad!

Oh, one more thing. The box art is teriffic! So many DVDs, including Anchor Bay's own Masters of Horror series, really disappoint on the cover art. But this is a great, graphically striking cover that conveys both a sense of what Hellboy is, and what this particular story is about. And the cardboard slipcase it goes in is shiny, which is always a plus! It should definitely stand out on the shelf at Best Buy when it comes out.

But I am much more excited to see all the new stuff you have mentioned!! Can't wait to get my DVD from Dark Delecacies. I have to wait a bit longer but it will be worth it!

I have a question for you Tad regarding the Sword of Storms DVD release advertisement in the latest Previews. It mentions a 32-page exclusive Mike Mignola comic book inside the first 300,000 DVD's. Is this a comic with all new material, material culled from existing comics, or a few new Mike pages with material from other artists thrown in? I'm just trying to gain clarity on what this comic is.
Thanks in advance!
Thirty two pages with story by Jim Pascoe, art by Rick Lacey. Much like the Hellboy Animated digest. Mike worked on the story with Jim. there is also a cool, disturbing, Mike Mignola pin up in it. Very strong cover by Jeff Matsuda.

Were these little gifts being sent out in the pre-orders through Amazon and whatnot as well? Or are they straight-to-shelf only? Pardon my ignorance, please.

Thanks Tad! I had a feeling that was the case. Sometimes the wording on advertising can be deliberately deceiving, but I doubt that in this situation it was meant to be that way.

www.dvdpacific.com has Animated Hellboy DVD in stock and if 4th DVD from my order were too, they'd probably ship my order tomorrow. So, if anyone wants to make an order online, I'd recommend this shop. Especially for people from Europe, as this shop uses "customs friendly" package.

If you mean the comic, it's inside the DVD case, not a tacked on extra.

I just saw that www.dvdpacific.com (this shop is in Florida) has both Sword of Storms and Amazing Screw-On Head DVDs in stock. So, they will probably post them today-tomorrow and if everything goes well, they will be here in Europe in 10-14 days...
Edit (the same day, some hours later): I got shipping confirmation!
Two cool things happened this week. We sent Rue Morgue Magazine both Hellboy: Sword of Storms (http://gotohellboy.com) and Hellboy: Blood and Iron. The editorial staff screened them and were shocked and surprised (in a good way) with the content and execution. So they wanted to interview me for the March issue, available in late February. The reporter said he actually jerked back in his seat and one of the quick surprise cuts! Now they must have been watching on a pretty big screen with a helluva sound system to get that reaction but still -- these guys watch a couple of splatter films before breakfast. So I was pleased.
Second, I just got back from the comic store and guy had bought and watched Sword of Storms. He was pleased with the movie and really thought the extras and comic made for a great value for the price so I feel good.
I'm perfectly set up for the world to come crashing down around my ears when the movies are cancelled. Remember, Hellboy: Sword of Storms makes an excellent drink coaster. Buy a set of six or more for all your party needs!

Thanks for the news, Tad! I can't wait to read the Rue Morgue piece. That's very exciting. I think the title's going to sell well. One, it's a great product with lots of enticing bonus features. Two, and probably more importnat in terms of getting bought at Best Buy and Target and Walmart (if they sell it there), it's got a really striking, eye-catching cover. (And it's shiny. Sure to add sales!) Three, Rue Morgue is doing a story. And I bet that's not the only media coverage you're going to end up with! And finally, everyone here will be buying it twice (and paying the Dark Delicacies mark-up the second time)! :D

GRRRRRRR... I enjoyed SoS, but thought it was a bit awkward and just finding it's feet (thoough I think the series can definetely improve quite a bit). I was in no hurry to buy it... but it has a cool featurette on the creation of Hellboy and I have to buy it soon to make sure to get the comic?!
I'm not made of money Tad!!!

Oh yeah? I heard you were still shoveling out the bucks for that food and shelter thing. C'mon, what's more important?
Relax about the comic, it's in every DVD of the first run. If they sell out before you get the comic, I'll send you one. But I doubt there'll be 300,000 people ahead of you before you pick one up.
But the comic and extras do make it a good deal, IMHO.

A little slow in a couple of spots but you have to expect a little fine tuning is required,[ it being the first cab off the rank].I loved the kappa tale, having read Mike's thoughts years ago on a future story it was good to see this idea see the light of day..The extras are good,a little more pre-production material would be great.Tad to you and the team, well done I know the further adventures are going to rock....congratulations on the award nomination....all the best.

BTW folks, for those who don't read Wizard regularly (which is probably most of you), there's an article in this month's issue mentioning that (while supplies last) if you purchase HB: SOS at Suncoast or FYI stores, you get a free copy of the Hellboy: SOD TPB with (what appears to be) a new cover. Just thought I'd throw that out there for any of you who may be on the fence about purchasing this DVD. Now you literally have no excuse!

No picture that I can provide right now, but I might be able to do up something when I get home and can scan the issue. The cover "LOOKS" new to me, but it may be the 3rd ed. cover all over again. It has the seven headed Dragon behind Hellboy who's standing slightly in profile, which looks similar to a previous edition of SOD, but I'm pretty sure it's all new.
Maybe Tad can shed some light on this for us?

Well, I relented and bought it. Went to FYE and got the neato digest Seed of Destruction (w/ new Mignola cover and Introduction natch). I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but I loved the featurette on HB's creation. It was great to put names to the faces you know?
...also, I thought Phantom Limbs was great. I enjoyed Black Wedding, but this was much stronger in both art and story. It's by the same creative team, and I hope whatever they did different on this one they do it some more.
:D
Also, really nice packaging.

I picked up a copy this weekend. Tad, you really did a bang-up job on this one. What a nice present for myself in all areas of production....the packaging, the extras, the whole nine yards. Well done! :)
Hey, Tad, I had no idea that you were Tad :) Not until I watched the extras with the San Diego panel! Very cool, man, congrats on all the success!
Anywho, I watched just about all of the extras yesterday, as well as read the Phantom Limbs comic. Just a really sweet package, all the way around. I started to watch a few minutes of the actual movie, as well, but won't have time to watch all of it again for a few more days. I had seen it on Cartoon Network previously, but I have to say it didn't do the animation justice. The colors are far more vibrant on the DVD. Just looks so much better.
I got such a kick out of Del Toro comparing Hellboy to a blue collar guy, specifically a plumber. I'm a plumber, I am co-owner of a plumbing and HVAC company with my father, so that really put a smile on my face :)
Thanks for buying it.
Y'know I bet a merchandising tie-in that Mike would buy off on in a second would be some humongous, so big you can barely carry it, plumber's wrench with a red handle and an etched Hellboy. The only way to handle your pipes of Doom.

Tad, apart from all the other stuff, you just seem like a fun guy to know, shame you never have to come out east.
I've only watched 2 extras to date, the con panel and the creating HB feature, probably this weekend is when i'll get to watch the movie itself.
Thanks for buying it.

Amazon was late delivering my pre-order (irony), so I didn't receive my copy until this last weekend. It's true - Cartoon Network did no justice to the sheer quality of the picture. Even on my old television, the colours are amazing and beautiful to watch. Excellent, although it spoiled me. Now that I have to tape Blood and Iron with CN's less-than-good quality, I'll be anxious to see the real thing.
All of the extras were good. The commentary was informative, and I'm looking forward to the second part of Mignola's creating of Hellboy. Curiously speaking, who was voicing Abe in the six-minute preview? I know it wasn't David Hyde Pierce or Doug Jones, but was the name of that soundalike ever released?
My favourite of the extras was probably the look behind the scenes with the actors. I was completely surprised to see that Phil LaMarr was a voice actor in the movie. I was so used to his John Stewart voice from JLU, I didn't even recognize him as the newbie and pilot. As well, the core actors/actresses were entertaining to watch providing their voices.
Good job, Tad and all other powers involved. You have my support in purchasing the second DVD. Looking forward to seeing if a third one is on the way.

Are they saying just the extras are better, or the overall package including the movies themselves? Personally, I agree that HELLBOY: SWORD OF STORMS is superior to ULTIMATE AVENGERS, ULTIMATE AVENGERS 2, and IRON MAN on all fronts. I did think, however, that they did an ok job on the extras for the two Avengers DVD's. Not as great as H:SoS, mind you, but still good. As for the films, I felt the two UA movies were alright, nothing special, but ok for kids. IRON MAN I actually really dug a lot. I love the old clunky grey armor, so it was fun to see it get so much screen-time :) The animation was superior to Marvel's previous two efforts, and I felt story-wise it was solid. Again, doesn't hold a candle to H:SoS (and I'm not just saying that because of where I'm posting!), but still not bad at all :)

We watched it last night.
I had heard a lot of crap about it from a couple of idiots at The Drawing Board, but I thought it was overall pretty enjoyable. Generally very nice animation, good voiceover (Ron and Peri were the best but Doug was quite good), and some cracking action scenes.
The Heads adaptation was excellent... Very funny. I loved the kappa fight, too. Perfect. It 'felt' like Hellboy in a lot of scenes, which I really loved. The bit with the thunder demon and the hammer was hysterical.
As far as not-so-good, Abe and Liz' subplot felt really tacked on. I did not care for the psychic (although he got a great scene with HB at the end), and I really disliked the Bureau's constant mentioning of past exploits... If they would have perhaps referenced comic stories, that would have been a nice in-joke, but as it was it felt like it was wasting time.
Good stuff. Looking forward to the next one!
-K.
P.S. I think Peri would make a good real-life Kate! Guillermo, Guillermo, Beuller, anyone?
Angilas-Man

^Exactly my complaint. The entire Liz and Abe plot was a complete bore. Just when we get going with Hellboy and start having a lot of fun the plot grinds to a screeching halt. The Kate/psychic stuff did this too, but had the Abe/Liz plot not been there, the Kate stuff would have been a bit more natural and less obtrusive ("meanwhile, back in the real world").

All true. That hammer bit was definitely the biggest laugh in the whole thing. It's one of those moments that felt very Hellboy, like you say, but I'm not sure it could have possibly worked as well in a comic (or in any medium but animation). Which is great, exactly what should be in an animated Hellboy movie.

I watched Sword of Storms today.I haven't been feeling that good today so I drifted off a few times but what I saw was pretty good.I'll have to rewatch it again when I'm feeling better. One thing I wasn't sure of though was Abe using a gun at one point in the movie.I've never read any of the Hellboy or related comics so all I'm going on was the live action movie so seeing him use the gun was a little weird and out of character.

I don't know why but I liked the movie even more on dvd than on Cartoon Network.
I don't have cable and didn't see it on Cartoon Network but my guess is that TV commercials interrupted the flow.

I know It's probably not the right thread but what the hell... I've just finished scooping through all the additional materialns on the Sword of Storm DVD and I do feel that praising this little DVD that came here just yesterday is in order. It's great. It has everything I could wish for. I have to express that you couldn't call me an Animated Hellboy fallower. I liked the movie but didn't find it anywhere near flawless. But the additional stuff? I'd buy the DVD just for that stuff, even if there was no movie in it. The documentaries are just perfectly balanced. They give you every detail you want and not bore you with thousands of details. And it's (mostly at least...) not the thing that Holywood DVD got us used to: it's not a 1,5 h act of people say'n how all of guy's attached to a project and them thelselves are cool and good to work with.
I had a great time watching these documentaries. If you're a hellboy fan and you don't allready own this baby- get it. You'll love it.
p.s.
And the comic that was added? Both the art and the story are much more interesting than the HB animated comic vol. 1. A great mike pin-up too.
One more thing... Where from is this HB pick on the back of the comic, on the Dark Horse advert, the one withe the egiptian motives in the back and HB stabbing the strange thing?
