I have all the issues, but am thinking about buying the TPBs for access reasons. However, I've heard that the binding on the TPBs causes some word balloons to be cut off either partly or entirely! Any confirmation from some who have bought the trades?

I've got all of them and unless I'm just missing, it's not a problem to me.

Sometimes the balloons come close to the middle of the book, and are slightly cut off, but it's nothing that will hurt the story or anything.
You just have to open the book a little further is all.

Sounds good.
BTW, what is collected in the first volume? I know it's a lot of pre-AOA stuff, but I can't find a list of what the actual issues are. Anybody willing to fill me in?

Yeah, the first book is all pre-AoA stuff. Some of it is still quite good.
Book 1
X-Men Chronicles #1-2
Tales from the Age of Apocalypse: By the Light
X-Man #-1
X-Man '96 Annual
Tales from the Age of Apocalypse: Sinister Bloodlines
Blink #1-4
And, just in case you are curious:
Book 2
X-Men Alpha
Age of Apocalypse: The Chosen
Generation Next #1
Astonishing X-Men #1
X-Calibre #1
Gambit and the X-Ternals #1-2
Weapon X #1-2
Amazing X-men #1-2
Factor X #1-2
X-Man #1
Book 3
X-Calibre #2-3
Astonishing X-Men #2-4
Generation Next #2-3
X-Man #2-3
Factor X #3
Amazing X-men #3
Weapon X #3
Gambit and the X-Ternals #3
X-Universe #1
Book 4
Generation Next #4
X-Calibre #4
X-Man #4
Gambit and the X-Ternals #4
Amazing X-Men #4
Weapon X #4
X-Universe #2
X-Men: Omega
Blink #4 *note* It's only the last few pages that occur after the AoA, so they put them here instead of the first book.
X-Men: Prime
X-Man #53-54
*note* Prime and X-Man #53-54 are after the AoA (the X-man ones occur in 616) In my opinion, they aren't very good and contribute nothing. When I reread mine, I will ignore these.

In mine, some of the speech bubbles have words randomly missing.
