As many of you know. I was in the process of building a high-spec gaming rig to replace my older system. It's finally finished!

Unfortunately in the time it took you to build it new, better parts are available making this computer obsolete. Please try to keep up with the times, Blair!;)

What games do you plan to play on it?

Not yet there's not. I should be clean for at LEAST 3 months.

I've mainly been playing Battlefield 2142 on it. Unfortunately I'm right in the middle of exam season, so most of the time I've spent on it has been spent using it for exam revision. I'm particularly looking forward to Crysis though.

I'm toying with the idea of getting another 8800GTX and SLIing them together, but I might as well wait untill they come down in price, because it will hardly make a difference. My games run like silk at the highest settings anyway.

how much did all that cost you and where did you pick up the parts?

Looks Great. Building one of my own is going to be my spring project.

I already had a 5.1 sound system and a monitor, so -thankfully- I didn't have to get any of those. The rest of the components came to around £2000 in total. It can be done for much less, however. I've seen very respectable builds in the region of £600.

I used www.overclockers.co.uk for most of my components, but their customer support is a bit wonky (they only do a 28 days warranty, which is why I had to deal direct with the manufacturer when exchanging my faulty Hard drive). In the future I'll probably do all my shopping at www.kustompcs.co.uk. They're a local business, and I'll -naturally- do all I can to support Scottish enterprise. The guys at kustom are all top-notch fellas, their stock is a bit on the pricey side, but their standard of customer service is beyond excellent.

So basically, $4,000.

In the UK, we get ripped off with computer components (and practically everything else thanks to Thatcher's socialist VAT). You guys can get them much cheaper. You can probably build the exact same system for $2300.

Blair, that's one sexy PC. It's refreshing to see a gaming rig that's sleek, yet not totally overdone.

Thanks

That's why I chose the Silverstone TJ03 case for my build. It has a very monolithic, tasteful and sleek front panel. Nothing too flashy.

It also has the advantage of being huge, so the cathodes don't fully light the innards. This was the look I was trying to achieve, a subtle glow from within, as opposed to blinding neon light.

Your PC makes my pants tight.

I need to overhaul mine whenever there's more PC games out that'd actually use the muscle

Sweet computer though.

I think that's the first time I've ever seen 'Thatcher' and 'socialist' in the same sentence.

Be that as it may...very nice rig, Blair!

That's very, very nice, Blair! How long have you been working on it?

Given my slow-tech tendencies, I'll probably have a computer like that in 2020 or so.

Just in time, too!

That looks cool.

I wouldn't have the first clue about building my own PC.

Seriously. I struggle to hang curtains, let me loose on a PC, and I'm liable to blow up half of the Midlands.

A month or so, the basic build only took 4 hours, but I've been making changes here and there ever since. The most time-consuming aspect was waiting for a faulty hard drive* being exchanged.

*The faulty HD worked fine initially, however, it subsequently developed a fault. Every 20 mins or so, I would hear a very loud "SPROING!" noise coming from the HD. I phoned my retailer, but they refused to exchange the faulty product, since it was outside the 28 days warranty as provided by them. Thankfully, most computer components come with fairly long manufacturer warranty periods (which is another benefit of building rather than buying pre-built), so I was able to return the HD straight to Seagate for an exchange.

It's surprisingly easy. It's like lego, but with a slightly higher risk of painful electric death.

Which is still less painfull than standing on a lego brick when you've got nothing on your feet.
