I just thought this would be fun. Post your first Marvel Comic that you ever read, how old you were at the time and the story about whatever happened to it. Scan if possible.
I'll start it off

THE HUMAN FLY. That says it all right there. I was about 6 and my half brother gave me a few Batman comics that I just thumbed through the pages drawing moustaches, goatees, glasses and just doodling on the boring regular unmasked characters when at the bottom of the pile was The Human Fly #4. First off I always liked ninja-like costumed characters and honestly I think his costume was one of if not the coolest out of the 1970's characters. I've had the book for 19 years now, and STILL occasionally read it! Its all tattered and creased up but if someone offered me $1,000 for this book I'd have to turn 'em down cause it is by FAR my favorite comic ever. This is the one that got me into comics and I went from Human Fly straight to Spider-Man. Its easier to have a favorite character who's alive isnt it? I think they need to BRING BACK THE FLY somehow, someway. If the other 3 Human Fly fans in the world read this and make enough noise maybe we can get them to do just that!

I think I was like, 6 when I read this.
it was a great book.

I have only very vague memories of my childhood comics - mostly Transformers, some GI Joe (I remember having that silent issue, with all the ninjas ninjing at each other with no dialogue). I think there may have been a Transformers/Spider-Man crossover at some point, with Spidey in his black costume. But the earliest 'proper' Marvel comics I can remember was this gem:
http://www.samruby.com/AmazingSpider-ManJ/Large/AmazingSpider-Man237.jpg
Stilt-Man baby, yeah. I remember absolutely nothing about the story, just the cover, because really, that's unforgettable.
Of my recent era, it was the first She-Hulk TPB, Single Green Female.

Now we're going back some... I actually think it was a UK Transformers comic where Swoop was being mind controlled by some bald guy... That is honestly all I remember...
Otherwise, it was X-men #1 by Claremont and Lee - I was kind of late getting into comics.

It's probably ASM #8 Vol 1, back in 1962. I had a collection up to about 1969, when life took a turn, and all those comics went to a fellow collector, and I lost track of where the collection went.
It was a story about a high school kid who had these spider powers, and a robot came to his school that could detect who Spiderman was. This kid got scared and tangled with the machine until he could turn it off. Even back then, this self-contained story was alive with Ditko action and rhythm. I can still see it now.

Definately Jim lee and Chris claremonts Xmen (adjectiveless).
The Blue and Gold Team idea was just fantastic.
Iceman sucked.
I miss the old bishop and people like Forge, cable.
Magento was a formidable opponent then also.
Omega Red was cool.
Gambit was cool.
Because I'm old -- but not necessarily the oldest poster! my first Marvel comic was early in the '60's. I'm afraid my memory isn't so hot so I can't pin it down easily. It was either a Spider-Man or an FF, with issue number in single figures. I must've been around 5 at the time but I'd already learned how to read so I had already been reading DC comics and British comics at the time.
But as many people have said, and in a much better way than I ever could : it's hard to overestimate the impact Stan, Jack and Steve had. It was so new and so different to what we were used to. Even apart from the "soap opera" approach to characters' problems and relationships, there was a new dynamism, a new feeling : man those pages looked like they were ready to explode!
And with Stan's salesmanship : he made us all feel like we were a part of it; we were all in on it, the greatness that was Marvel.

I just remember how powerful the art, and stories were in these two books. Seeing Colossus and Juggernaut duke it out was awesome. Probably the best fight scene between these two ever. The raw emotion of how Kitty reacted when Peter was breaking up with her. The attitude and reasons why Wolvie let Pete go it alone against Jugs just drove it home, and made Wolvie the most human I have ever seen him in. I kinda wish he'd be written like that now, instead of how they currently portray him.
And the Awesomeness that was the New Mutants was...wow. This series was good, but when Bill Sienkiewicz came on this series, it really hit it's stride and became great, and didn't let up until Claremont left the title. Sure, a story involving a demon bear sounds hokey, but CC really drove it home. Plus, this storyline really made me fall in love with Dani, and she's still my favorite New Mutant of all time.

OK, the first ever Marvel comic I read was this one...
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/7320/starwarsweekly20pq9.jpg
It was issue #20 of the UK Star Wars Weekly comic. I would've been 5 years old when it came out and I remember being on holiday with my parents at the time. One of my parents (can't remember which one) bought me this issue.
The first US Marvel comic I ever bought & read was this one...

I'm pretty sure it was this one. Banner comes to Reed Richards seeking a cure, Richards' cure is a little violent, and the Thing decides that the Hulk and he are two of a kind, monsters, and should be friends. I think even then I knew the plot was pretty contrived and implausible, but the issue was a whole lot of fun. After that I started buying the Hulk each month, and filling in back issues... I have every issue between around 115 and 467 (last David issue).
edit: I should mention that although I'm pretty sure this was the first one I read, it was an older issue even then -- the ones on the newsstands had just turned 40 cents. (Hulk 236 was the first comic I actually BOUGHT.) I ain't that old. :)

My first comic:
http://image.milehighcomics.com/istore/images/large/42474165094.1.gif
I loved that book! I can't even guess how many times I read it. I bought it at a grocery store, I liked it because it had so many heroes on it (front, back, and foldout). The cover tore off, so I taped it back on with masking tape, haha. I replaced it years later, though I still have my original. I would NEVER get rid of this book.....it will always have a special place in my heart.
It was in the summer of '92, so I was 13.
Oh...and my second Marvel comic (I know nobody asked, but I am geeking out, just let it happen)

Mine was Spectacular Spider-Man 198, guest starring the X-Men. The reason I bought it was because I had just played that terrible Spider-Man and X-Men SNES game with Arcade. It was a total fluke that I just happened to walk by a comic with both Spider-Man and the X-Men in it a week or so later.

A friend invited me over to play Nintendo and he had a few Spider-Man comics lying on top of his dresser. I asked what they were, I was 7 I didn't know about comics. I didn't even know that the baseball card shop I went to was actually a comic shop. He let me read one, the only thing I really remember about it was Spier-Man being dead. After I read that comic book I began buying every comic book my mom would let me. I don't remember those comics because I read them once and put them in a box with my cards. My grandpa accidently threw the box I had away when he was painting my room. After that I didn't read comics for several years.

Fantasty Masterpieces #1 from 1966... a reprint book of classic Ditko, Ayers, Kirby and other artwork from the monster period of Marvel/Atlas...
Along with this beauty, I also scored Fantastic Four #18, 21, 25, 33, 36,39, 44,45,46,47,48,49,50. Yes, the last three were the actual original Galactus Trilogy! I'll try to post an image of one of these later...

First Marvel Comic I bought which basically happened because I knew other people that were interested. I went and bought like a mixed bag at the comic store and it had an issue of Fantastic Four where pineapple thing takes on the hulk and the first issue of X-men vs. Fantastic Four. I was hooked and then started buying my comics at the mall at Waldenbooks. Eventually I got into going to the actual stores and the rest is history.

I was too youn to remember how young I was, but there were a few comicbooks around the house when I grew up that I read.
My first comic was either, Amazing Spider-man #5 (yes. The real thing, original print. No clue whatever happened to that issue.)
Or it was another issue of Spider-man that had him fighting the Tarantula and showed the Jackal. I rember it by the fact that at one point Spider-man gets clobbered by the Jackal from behind and then comments how his spider sense only warns him of dangers and he's never consider (* cue dramatic unmasking*) Professor Miles Warren a threat. The comic didn't have a cover on it so I'm not sure what issue that was.

... I had already been reading DC comics and British comics at the time.
Jam, I agree with your assessment of what an exciting time that was with Marvel.
As a kid I also started out as a DC comics reader (probably because of the Batman TV show), for about a year, and enjoyed the simple, rather straightforward stories (I read Batman. Wonder Woman, the JLA, the Legion, Superman, and some others). This was in 1966, I was eight.
Then, I caught some episodes of the Marvel Super-Heroes TV cartoons: Cap, Thor, Hulk, etc. There was a Cap episode that featured the Avengers (Hawkeye, Quicksilver and Wanda) and for some reason they fascinated me. BTW, this episode was based on Avengers #18, "When The Commissar Commands" (or something like that). I decided I wanted to buy an Avengers comic book and read about these characters. (Previously, I'd seen Marvel on the newstands but had never been interested).
So in August 1967, I took the plunge and bought not one but two Marvel comics: FF #68 and Avengers #45. As you said it was "so different" from what I was used to! Upon reading these 2 Marvel books, I got the feeling that things had happened in the characters' lives before these issues...unlike the neat, no loose-ends stories in most DC books. The Marvel characters were three-dimensional and called each other by their real names. The Marvel characters clearly had history and there were references to past events. I felt like I was reading a novel (DC books were more like a series of unrelated, unconnected short stories, with very little if any continuity).
After a couple of months' worth of Marvel, I was hooked and soon gave up my DC habit, except for the Legion of Super-Heroes. (A couple of years later, DC attempted to become more like Marvel and incorporate soap opera elements, relevance, calling heroes by their real names, etc.)
And as you said, Stan made the readers feel like part of a community. The Bullpen Bulletins, the letter pages, the house ads...so different from staid, formal DC! It was a beautiful time to be a fan, to experience all that firsthand.
So FF #68 and Avengers #45 will always hold special meaning for me.

How I came by them, I cannot remember, but the earliest Marvels I do recall as a boy of oh, say 10 or so, maybe younger, were a "Nick Fury, Agent of Sheild"-- the issue with the big Steranko op-art spiral on the cover and Nick set in the midst of it, and a "Strange Tales" when it was a two-character/two story comic, featuring Dr. Strange standing ethereally in dark green or black. I'm going to guess at Nick fury #12 and Strange Tales 178.
Strange Tales, incidently, was the comic that brought me back into comics reading 15 or 20 years later, when I found it at a flea market priced at like $2.50 in really excellent condition and it amused me to have a 12-cent comic from my youth now a $2.50 comic book. Two things happened: when I got it home, nostalgia turned into surprise because it was REALLY good! and, secondly, it was continued... forcing me, forcing me, I say, to find a comic book store in 1974 Philadelphia (Hello, Fat Jacks!) for the follow-up issue.
Sigh. Been readin'm ever since....!

I think I was like, 6 when I read this.
it was a great book.
wowwww, that's depressing for a 6 year old.
my first mayyy have been x-men 1 with the lots of fold out covers and pinups in the back. i'm not entirely sure, but it's definitely one of the earliest if it's not the first.
that magneto pinup with the dismembered x-men (statues?) in the back which i didn't know wasn't part of the story at the time because i was a dumb kid, coupled with an inherited DKR and gerard jone's "martian manhunter, american secrets" reeeeeeally screwed with how i see superheroes. there's also scores of spiderman involved here, but those three, really... superman being a government enforcer who runs on sunflowers. castro being dissed as not a real commie by MM with people exploding. and of course, i was like "well, wolverine could survive this, but cyclops and psyloce without arms and stuff, jeeeeze"
and then there's the "sketches of the future" thing where i didn't read any of the issues with all these future things. fabian cortez and omega red and all that.
it's kinda funny, i didn't grow up with "uncle stan" writing 300 comics a week, and all that. by the time i knew who he was, he was already a legend but still (at least on and off) doing the letters pages.
when DC did the augh, i can't think of what it's called, but the page of like, editorial stuff and baby announcement for the staff, i skipped over it and didn't even know what it was for years.

Gah, I have a terrible memory, but I have been searching my dusty brain space and the earliest comic I remember getting was an issue of X-Men Classic, NO idea the numbering, from a local Fred Meyer store. I just remember the X-Men were going to fight Dr. Doom, I believe it was in his castle? Anyhow, there were a bunch of booby traps and I believe the entire issue was them trying to make it through Doom's funhouse...
In fact, if somebody has any idea which issue I am thinking of, I would love to know ;) It would be kind of interesting to know what year it came out.

Similar to Miss Kitty Fantastico, I have vague memories of having read other comics prior to this one (borrowed from friends or thumbing through them at the grocery or drug store), but can't recall specifically the issues or characters. But this is the one that sits in my memory as my first 'real' comic and first one that I owned. I was laid up in the hospital in 2nd grade and my dad bought me some comics at the hospital's gift shop. The first one I read:
http://www.atakra.com/pictures/ebaycomics/magazines/fantastic_four250.jpg
Absolutely awesome Byrne Fantastic Four era battle royale featuring the FF plus Spider-Man, Captain America, Gladiator, and the X-Men (well, Skrulls disguised as the X-Men anyway). My younger grade-school self was blown away by its greatness. It overshadowed the handful of other comics my dad brought me. The only other one I can recall from them is this one:
http://www.geocities.com/ironman_villains/stane/ironman167.jpg
The 'Tony's battle with alcoholism' subplot may have sailed over my 8 year old head a bit, but I loved the IM armor and Stane's cool chess-themed supervillain henchmen. I would later end up with subscriptions to Spidey, FF and Iron Man, before getting into the X-Men and Batman about two years later. But those two issues are the comics that I recall as my 'first' and that got me interested in Marvel comics and characters.

Is this it? I think the funhouse you referenced is Arcade's Murderworld.

Nope, not that one, though thanks for looking :)
I found the issue (no idea how to post pictures):
http://www.comicvine.com/comic/x-men-classic/6685/47687/&i=1468
No date for when it was released though :(
EDIT: 1994?? Thought it was earlier...I guess I was 12 when I bought my earliest comic book.
DOUBLE EDIT!:
NM, I guess my earliest comic was Uncanny X-Men #273: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Books/Comic-books/Marvel/auction-84086919.htm
Which I thought was the second X-Men comic I ever got, but I guess I have it reversed. Uncanny X-Men #273 came out in 1991, which I purchased in some local grocery store. So I was about 9 years old. I bought X-Men religiously from that issue forward too, Skrull Professor X was the best ;)

Oh, I see. Classic X-Men #49-51 reprints the 1981 issues (145-147) that I posted. My fault, as you mentioned that it was an issue of Classic, so I should have looked for that as opposed to the original issues. And I saw that issue of Classic listed as coming out in 1990 instead of 1994, so your instincts on it being earlier appear to be correct. :D
To post images, put in front of the link to the image and at the end.

I was six. I'd never even heard of the X-Men when I picked it up, but was fascinated by the colorful characters. That issue gave me an unhealthy fascination with Illyana Rasputin for years.

My brothers were starting to collect Transformers comics, but i was looking for something a little different.
Then i read this ad:

A great combination of a brand new ongoing title that still had a lot of history behind it.
This was my first issue:

Wonder Man, Iron Man, Henry Pym, Tigra, Hawkeye & Mockingbird have been at the top of my list ever since then.

I'm not sure what the issue number is, but it must have been a reprint because it was the Spidey taking on Circus of Crime and Spidey get's hypnotised
seeing as I was born in 1976 I don't think it's AS-M #16, so I guessing the story got repeated in Marvel Tales around 1981-3 (I can't remember the specific year)
I didn't really get into comic until Secret Wars got reprinted in UK and then I moved onto Spider-Man & Zoids
my first proper 'me buying a US comic' was AS-M 323 the 4th part of the Assassin Nation Plot, after that I was hooked

that issue, and 218 probably make the best two part storyline in X-men history in my honest opinion.

The first one I can remember being mina and not my older brother's was the Digest form of the Return Of The Jedi comic book adaptation. I was reading it in the car on my way to Toronto when I was six. (1983)

I remember seeing this comic (first one ever) and reading it a million times and being so fascinated by it. It was the only comic I had for the longest time.
I was pretty young then.
Then in my late teens I started collecting comics on a regular basis.

The Balkatar! Champion of the cat people. With the assistance of Michael Morbius, the Avengers were trying to help Tigra deal with increasingly erratic behavior.

I was probably 7 or so at the time and I had comics before this one, but I remember the artist drawing the panels with the snow and it has always been a favorite of mine.

I already shared my story of the first Marvel Comic I ever OWNED. Now my story of the First Marvel Comic I ever BOUGHT individually-http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j10/ericg581/asm333venomenon.jpg
THATS what I'm talkin about! June 1990! After I had my 'Human Fly' geekgasm I then talked my parents into ordering me huge amounts of grab bag type boxes from Mile High Comics...They were cheap and I got TONS of comics to read *which is where I got the New Mutants I spoke with Mariah about and tons of GI JOE/ TRANSFORMERS books* and I'd get my package of a huge box of comics shipped to me and I'd be set for a good week or 2 on the reading material.
Well I went to the local news stand which was actually in a small building while my pop was buyin an EasyRider biker mag, and glanced at the comic wrack- the first thing that caught my attention was a huge muscular 'evil' looking 'Spider-man' of some sorts. I grabbed this issue and was formally introduced to my all-time favorite Villian VENOM! What a book. What a villian. Kind of like Peter Parker's own little Bizzarro I soon thereafter picked up ASM 300, 315-317, 330-332 to complete this story 333 finished, 345-347, 361 introduced me to Venom's "Oh so very Chipper 'Son' Carnage". I got the rest of that Arc as well. 375 is my favorite cover to a Venom tale ever.
Then Venom got alittle bit of the 'WOLVERINE Syndrome'. He would be in like 3 books a month and became WAYYY too overexposed and ridiculous. The whole I wanna eat your brains stuff kinda started gettin old and repeatative. Do something else please Mr. Brock? I wanna eat your children was already coined by Mike Tyson yeah, but maybe "I wanna eat your dog"? "I wanna eat old ladies"? something please!
What I would give to see Eddie Back in Black himself. This Scorpenom or whatever you wanna call him is just dumb. I think one of the last marvel comics i bought before my hiatus from collecting/ reading was Marvel Knights Spider-man where Mac gets the suit.
To Quote my main man Professor Hubert Farnsworth " PROPOSTEROUS!" of Marvel to take 2 well established Characters and fuse them into one entity.

Way back in the 70's I picked this sucker up off of a comic carousel at at 7-11 and haven't missed a regular issue of the FF since. As Stan would say, this one had it all!

I don't remember the issue number but it was part 10 or 11 or the X-cutioners song for the x-men cross-over. It was actually an X-Factor. Apocalypse and Archangel are on the cover as they cure Xavier. I was in 3rd grade and for my birthday someone gave me an x-men action figure with this issue taped to the back board. I was into the animated tv show and the trading cards, so i was familiar with the characters already.
sorry, no scan.
