View Full Version : Matt Wagner on Grendel!
I did a two-part piece talking about the resissue of DEVIL BY THE DEED, and his thoughts on the character after 25 years.

Great article. I still think GRENDEL is the greatest comic book of all time.

Grendel is one of those titles that every comic book fan should read at some point.

Awesome. I've just gotten in to Grendel with Red White & Black, and I loved hearing that the original stuff will be reprinted. Just to prove that comic book fans can never be satisfied, though, I have to ask if there are any plans to reprint God and the Devil.

Great article Zack! One small thing though. You mention this new book being the first hardcover Devil by the Deed. That is incorrect. Graphitti Designs released a limited (2000 copies) signed hardcover edition, with an intro by Alan Moore back in 1986. I've got it sitting right in front of me. It's a beautiful book.
Bring on part two!
Someone in the Indies forum informed me of the Graphitti Hardcover -- I sent a note to Jonah to clarify. My apologies! Dark Horse had said in their solicitation that this was the first time the book was in hardcover, and I believed them. Should have done more homework. )>:

I also am a huge Grendel fan, thou i did not like the future grendel storylines.
I also consider the first Batman/Grendel crossover to be one of the all time greatest inter-company crossovers ever done.
I still need to get the Grendel Black White and Red series from a bit back,as those looked incredible.
Part Two is now up! (http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=9355)
More preview art, plus hints at the new series with Hunter Rose and the future of the character!

The backups in Mage rocked my world as a teen. Sometimes I still wish Matt drew in the same style he used to... that pseudo-manga-before-it-was-cool style. His stuff now looks more like ol' Bernie Mirault. Black, White, and Red has been sooo good, but James Robinson's stint on Grendel Tales was quite the shit as well, IIRC. Man, back in the day (which was a Wednesday, of course) Wags could do no wrong. I'm still waiting for another installment of The Aerialist. I even have a promo Mage II t-shirt, from before the Mage backups even appeared in Grendel, asking, "What color will magic be this time?" I used to tell people that if I had a boy child, he would be christened Hunter Rose Kelly, or Rose Hunter Kelly if a girl.
*sigh* Those were the days.

This is encouraging me to buy Grendel, and on my next comic shop forage I will!
Also there should be a crossover with Judge Dredd so we'll have two Wagners. :D

I'll see your Secret Six, and raise you a G-Prime in Suicide Squad.
