Of course, the real fun of these surveys is reading each others’ explanations for our choices. The original threads are linked below.

If one of your favorites got just one vote, don't assume you're the only one that loves 'em. Looking through the list there are several that I seriously considered putting somewhere on my list of twelve:
Animal Man, Big Barda, The Black Knight, Maggie Chascarillo, Deadman, Green Lantern (Alan Scott), Green Lantern (John Stewart), Bat Lash, The Man-Thing, Metamorpho, Robotman, Starman, Wildcat, and The Zombie.

From the two-voters, these were in contention for me:
The Atom, Concrete, The Creeper, Hopey Glass, Hourman, The Sub-Mariner, and Superboy.

Some of my actual choices garnered two other votes (for a total of three), but I also pondered including these three-voters:
Plastic Man and Swamp Thing.

Of the higher-scoring characters, only the Thing came close to making my list.

Several of your choices just hadn't occurred to me. I was really floored by the inclusion of Charlie Droople, that wonderful one-shot Skeates/Aparo creation.

Well done indeed Cei-U. I looked at your compiled stats with great interest. A personal reflection... so many of the characters particpants listed, no matter where and how often or little they appeared in your compilation of statistics, would also have made my list if either I had thought of them or if we were asked to include our top twenty, rather than twelve. The one exception, strangely enough, would be the overall most loved character of all. For whatever reason Batman has always failed to catch on in my imagination. I can't explain this... the character really is so very cool and I embrace all those excellent reasons people gave for making Batman their number one.

Oh well, my New Years resolution... read more Batman.

My close but no cigar list included , Swamp Thing, Zatanna, the Beast , The Shadow (Helfer/Sienkiewicz version), Doc Savage, Clive Reston, Hawkman, The Atom, Wonder Man, The Beast, iron Man , Captain America, Carol Danvers, Rorschach, William Gull ( as depicted in From Hell), Ultra Boy, The Thing, Bridget Kinsolving and the Angel.
Had to be ruthless to cut the list down so a top 20 would have been straightforward for me.

Nice to see the post with links to each day. I have long had my own Top Ten list - the same first ten on the list posted in these forums - and it was only a matter of adding numbers 11 & 12. I am obviously the only one with no superhero character on the list. If I had to include someone, it would have to be Superman because he is the only one that I have some knowledge of via comics. He would probably be No:17 or 18.

Having said that, back in 1968, a distant cousin spent a few months in my house after breaking a leg. He had a stack of superhero comics and I vaguely recall a series where there were "Knights (or warriors?) of Lallor" or something like that. One of the characters was called "Duplicate Boy" and his real name was Qued something-or-the-other. I became briefly interested in those stories, but it did not last.

Hintermann, this seems a good an opportunity as any to say that your posts in these thread were amongst those I looked forward to reading the most. Even those characters I've never read before like Sad Sack were extremely well described, and your comments were very entertaining and educational to me.
Oh, the comics you've just described appear to have been prime Adventure Comics era tales of the Legion of Superheroes in case you wondered, and the character name you recall is Ord Quelo of the Heroes of Lallor- considering your professed lack of knowledge about superhero comics, I find your recall of that particular information impressive to say the least.

[ too much information]

Duplicate Boy was a supporting character in the Legion of Super-Heroes, and the team he was a member of was called the Heroes of Lallor. His real name was Ord Quelu or Quelu Ord, in either order. His power was to duplicate any other superpower, making him the most powerful superhero in the Legion mythos. He had a longstanding romance with Shrinking Violet, until a later story where she got kidnapped and replaced with an impostor, and he suspected something was wrong but neglected to tell anybody. When Vi escape from captivity, she beat him up and ended the relationship (which, according to some fans, was never really serious since Vi was a closeted lesbian).

Finalists who didn't quite make the cut for me were Sue Dibny, Sgt Rock, Medusa (or some other favorite Inhuman, namely Black Bolt or Crystal ... or, hell, quite possibly Lockjaw!), Ms Tree, Ben Grimm, & some Legionnaire or other whom I'd've chosen through a series of coin-tosses or something ... undoubtedly others who'll come to mind as soon as I hit "Submit Reply."

Zippy would definitely have ranked high on my list if I thought of him as a comics (or, more apropos, comix) character, which I know is how he started out. I've read very, very few of those appearances, though, & know & love him almost solely from Griffith's strip, which I first encountered in the Phoenix New Times Weekly while going to school out there in the early '80s.

As noted during the thread, I was all primed to put Powers' Deena Pilgrim in until Kurt had occasion to mention his ban on characters introduced after '98. The same consideration presumably would've kept me from listing She-Hulk's Awesome Android (dates back to the early '60s, but the version I love -- Dan Slott's -- has been around only the last couple of years. (I already bent the rules by listing Jennifer Walters herself, since again it's Slott's version I'm enamoured with.)

I really could have filled most of my list with members of the Batman family, so I made a personal rule to spread the wealth around.

Thanks GV (and Sir Tim, for the info). Actually I fully read only one Duplicate Boy story where another Lallor character whose name I forget is attracted to DB's girlfriend - I think she was called Violet something - and she briefly to him. DB cathes them kissing passionately, loses his temper and threatens to kill the other guy before the girl calms him down.

I also recall an earlier scene in the same story where everyone is returning home after a party. As people get dropped off at their apartments in huge skyskrapers, they seem to float across on anti-gravity belts or something.

I had the Spirit too, LR. I can't believe, though, that I forgot Bat Lash, Concrete and Ms. Tree.

And now that I think about 80s indies, Wolverine McAllistaire should've been way up on my list.

I had the Spirit too, LR. I can't believe, though, that I forgot Bat Lash, Concrete and Ms. Tree.

And now that I think about 80s indies, Wolverine McAllistaire should've been way up on my list.

MDG

Sorry about that MDG - I didn't look at the list, I was basing my statement on Simon Garth's post.

I forgot to add Doll Man to my 'close but no cigar'.

I loves me some Darrell Dane.

That sounds like an issue of Legion from about early-mid 80s: some bunch of Legionnaires are trapped on a moonlet or something and someone or other (Collosal Boy, ISTR) and Violet get interested, only to be interrupted by DB.

Coming back to the nearlies - I always liked Shrinking Violet for a couple of reasons - (1) I loved the name (even before I know that it was a pun on slang for shyness, which I'd never heard at the time), and (2) loved her green and black costume.

Other nearlies: The Spirit and Dolan (if I'd actually remembered they existed  ), virtually all the cast of Killraven (in fact most of the cast ahead of 'raven; loved Carmilla Frost, M'Shulla and Old Skull), Badger, Wolverine (even as over-exposed, and ludicrously over-powerful as he is now), Spider-Man, Firelord, the ever-lovin' blue-eyed Thing, Shang Chi, James-Michael Starling, Deena Pilgrim (I wish Powers qualified), Maggie from L&R, Shade the changing man, Angel, the Ape, Dirty Drew and Dirty Fleagle, and oh, just lots of people. I'm a tad hampered in my recollection as I no longer possess any comics earlier than late 2005!

On another tack - it was interesting to see a number of characters turn up that I absolutely loathed. It's obviously true that every characters is someone's favourite (even Clonezone!)

I forget which issue this was, but I think it was somewhere between #295 and #306. At this point, Shrinking Violet had been kidnapped and replaced by a shapeshifter named Yera, but no one knew it yet. Yera, the impostor, fell in love with Colossal Boy (a Legionnaire, not a Lallorian), who had had a longstanding unrequited crush on the real Violet. They ran off and got married, off-panel, and remained married even after it was revealed that Yera was not the real Violet.

That sounds like an issue of Legion from about early-mid 80s: some bunch of Legionnaires are trapped on a moonlet or something and someone or other (Collosal Boy, ISTR) and Violet get interested, only to be interrupted by DB.

That issue was #289, which I think was slightly earlier than the one I was just describing. That issue does have some romantic scenes with Colossal Boy and (the fake) Violet. But you might be thinking of the scene where Light Lass shows up to rescue her boyfriend Timber Wolf, and finds him in a compromising position with Saturn Girl.

I get a weird kick out of reading Tim's explanations of Legion continuity.

My also-rans:

Power Girl
Thor
Wildcat
Hulk
Silver Surfer
Spider-Man
Red Tornado
Green Lantern (Hal)
Wonder Woman
Timber Wolf (could have been any Legionnaire, but Brin's my fave)
Luke Cage
Iron Fist
Shang Chi
Iron Man
Longshot
Martian Manhunter
Green Arrow
Aquaman (yeah, I said it)
Flash (Barry Allen)
Ghost Rider (Western)
Jonah Hex

Ummm ... who/what exactly was this? A Google of the name yields only 1 hit -- a CBR post by MDG yearning for a collection.

Wolverine Mc is the lead character in this title by William Messner-Loebs- Essentially he's a frontiersman roaming the woodlands around Lake Michigan before and during the 1812 wars.
I can only echo MDG and Kan-Man - he is a great character and that is one of my favourite titles. I too wish I'd included him

Now look here, Graham -- my want list is already expanding exponentially every time I read this thread &/or dip into the 25-for-$7.99 long boxes under the counters at the LCS nearest the house (as I have done, alas, my last 3 or 4 visits there, with 200-plus mostly indy titles from the mid-'80s-to-mid-'90s to show for it), & these sorts of posts don't help the problem at all!

In which case if you happen to find a copy of Journey:Wardrums issue 2, please buy it for me- I had no idea it had ever been released and only found out about it last year- roughly 20 years after it was released.
in fact if anyone has actually GOT a copy let me know!

Good luck, Graham. Y'know, this is the sort of thing that makes me wake up in the middle of the night wondering (well, not really -- I almost always do wake up in the middle of the night, mind, but it's because of a long pattern of sleep problems that long predate my re-immersion into comics*) whether my evil friend was actually tellling the truth way back in elementary school when he insisted that he'd seen a copy of Brother Power -- the Geek #3(!!!) in an out-of-town spinner rack ...

*Though this morning's dream about reading some article on old "key issues" might've played a role in this instance ...

You're going to hate me for this, Dan...
I just saw a listing for that issue in ebay as part of a four part DC 1970s lot.
Search under the name "Black Magic", and it'll probably pop up as one of only 10 or so items.

Good luck!

If so, it's not there now. Besides, other than the occasional cruel jibe from certain individuals here, I know that comic never came out. I know it.

Really.

I do.

Honest.

Can't hurt to try eBay again ...

What? No Matter Eater Lad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matter-Eater_Lad) or Arm Fall Off Boy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arm_fall_off_boy)?!? How can ANYONE overlook these classics? :D

Krazy Kat, Schmoo, and Cerebus top my list. The Bob Kane Batman fits in there somewhere also. There's too much good classic stuff to comprehend.
