Well, inspired by the Spider-Man thread, I am going to write my thoughts on these classic books as I read them. I have never read any of these issues before, being a relatively new comics reader, and am taking advantage of GITCorp's DVD releases to get all the issues. I'm going to start where I'm currently reading, which is all the February 1965 issues, so I guess it's not quite "from the beginning", but it's close! It would take quite a while to write a review for each of the issues I've just recently read and I'd like to continue where I'm reading. So, without further ado:
FF #35 (Feb. 1965):
Calamity On Campus! Yes, the Fantastic Four go to college. Reed is supposed to teach a guest lecture at State U. and the other three tag along. Naturally disaster strikes and the FF are required to fight Dragon Man, a creature who is neither a dragon nor a man but rather an animated statue of a dragon-type creature.
The villain behind the villain of this issue is Diablo, making his second appearance in this series. He hasn't impressed me so far in either of his appearances. His power (brewing special potions) isn't particularly interesting and neither is his costume, though he does wear a rather jaunty hat in one panel when he drives past Sue Storm on his way to animate Dragon Man. He is done in when Dragon Man, still a dumb beast re-animated or no, turns against him and they both disappear into Dead Man's Lake, never to be seen again (or are they?). Surely Diablo will appear again in the future to menace the FF but I'm not sure what could be done with Dragon Man as he doesn't speak and can't really do anything more than any other large, angry animal could.
One notable development in this issue is the final statement of love between Reed and Sue. They've danced back and forth over this for the length of the series so far, with intermittent interference from Sub-Mariner, but finally here they both profess their love for each other and wedding bells seem sure to follow. From what I know of comics in this period, weddings between characters were pretty rare, so if and when this happens it'll be a big event.
