Has Batman ever had to lie? I'm not talking about Bruce Wayne, because obviously he's had to tell quite a few 'fibs' to get out of certain situations. But the Batman is a different case. Has he ever lied to his teammates? Robin? Nightwing? Oracle? Jim Gordon? Alfred? Anyone? If so, when and why?

Oh, plenty of times. He had Azrael pass himself off as Batman to Gordon. He lied to Spoiler about why he made her Robin. He funded the current Outsiders without telling Nightwing about it.

There's probably plenty more, but I'm tired and can't think.

He's never been above lying. If it suits his purpose he will.

What are we talking about?
This is Batman, not some big blue boyscout with dellusions of sainthood.

He will lie, bluff and cheat if the situation so requires and Iīm perfectly okay with that.

IMHO, Batmanīs sole scruple should be "do not kill".

Otherwise, be it breaking kneecaps or cheating the Joker, itīs all game.

Edit: Iīm hating my keyboard today. Does it have to omit every other key I tap?

Far too many times to mention! He's a lying son of a bat!

This topic reminded me of an exchange from LOTDK 76 ("The Sleeping"). Bruce Wayne was involved in a car accident and winds up in a coma. He awakens in the netherworld as Batman and is told that he must find his way out before he dies in the real world. He meets Henry Sands who's in a similar predicament:

"But I can't call you 'Batman.' 'What's up, Batman?'. It sounds so formal. People'll think I don't like you. Besides didn't that guy tell you we wouldn't remember any of this? That makes sense to me. When has anybody ever come out of a coma and started spouting stuff about 'lakes of fire' and 'soul eaters' and 'harpies'? Come on. Give."

"Fine. Call me...Jeff"

"Is that your real name?"

"Yes"

"You swear?"

"Yes."

Yeah, he lies plenty. At the very least, he's keeps stuff from people, which is akin to lying, and probably involved lies.

Ex;

Superman: Say Bruce, ever, y'know, make a sentient satellite to spy on everyone?

Batman: No. No I have not. Shut up.

Mine does that all the time.

I can't remember any specific examples, but yes I remember times when the bat as lied.

I see he's lied a lot of times to insignificant people (i don't really count Azrael/Gordon much as a lie). Has he specifically lied to his team mates: Batgirl, Robin, or Nightwing (aka Barbara Gordon, Tim Drake/Jason Todd, and Dick Grayson)?

Daily.

Shit, it's probably perpetually on his
"to-do" list.

1.Tune up the batmobile
2.Patrol
3. Lie to someone.

Well he lied to his JLA team mates for like what, 60 years running up to Tower of Babel, so I'd think that he'd lie to the bat-family if he thought it was in their best interest.

Batman would lie to himself if he knew he could get away with it and not have to come back and kick his own butt for not telling him the truth.

He's lied to all of them, usually when he thinks it's for their own good.

That's right Batman only ever lies for the common good of all mankind.

That time he told Alfred he liked the new rhubarb pie recipie he was trying out. He's Batman, but he's not made of stone...

I like to think of it as wry.

Funny enough I just watched the Justice League Episodes A Better Future And Batman lies to the alternate dimension batman in that. So he even lies to himself!
