View Full Version : What If? Ultimate Wolverine

what if wolverine wasnt a trained assassin or the center of the X-Men?
I've been toying around the idea in my head over the past week and the more i think about it the more i like it. instead of wolverine being this bad ass assassin or some huge team player of the X-men, he was actually a student at Xaviers school? he could still have the adamantium and all his abilities but his backround would go something like this:
Logan is captured by canadian/US govt. and forced into the weapon x program alla 616(only he is younger and not involved with WWII). he still gets his bones coated and is given a set of claws but before they can start training him, either he escapes or xavier buys him out so that he could go to the school.
this ultimazation works because the whole reason for the ultimate universe is to avoid convoluted continuties and backrounds. what better way then to have logan born in the 80's and have his whole life start where most other teens have started. another reason i like this change is that it would help to keep wolverine from getting overexposed and force writers to write something new instead of the repetive Cap America meets with logan, calls him james, then explains how they go way back.
another idea i thought would work would be that he never had the adamantium laced to his bones and he goes through the series with bone claws and a slightly less buffed healing factor.
however this choice i would see as the least favorable. for one writers would feel obliged to be the one who gives logan the metal, and two from what iv heard and read, everyone hates bone claws. i like this change though because i think with a less powerfull healing factor and bone claws it would make wolverine less of the undestructable killing machine and more of a tactile killer since he can still get hurt and not depend on his healing factor to pull him through.
anyways what do you guys think?

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense. If your going to give him the Adamantium, then you pretty much have to give him the training as well. Like you said... if you wanna have a 'Teen Logan', ditch the Adamantium and do something like the Origins Wolverine. Boneclaws are fine. :)

It's also not terribly smart to coat the bones of your very expensive, brandnew mutant assassin with metal. The kid gets another growth spurt and you lose everything.

But why would you coat the bones of a teenager? It just doesn't make sense. The only reason that Wolverine was chosen for Weapon X is that he was already a good soldier. That's why he was a candidate for what they did to him. Like I said, best way is the second way. Basically like they did for Ultimate X-Men in regard to the Beast. Since Weapon X is the one that made him all Beastial.

maybe it could be some sick experiment to see whether or not they could coat someones bones with metal and logan was just a guinea pig chosen for his healing factor. but like you said the second idea works better and was my personal fav. i just thought everyone was against bone claws so i tried pushing the first suggestion because its closer to 616 and apparently the majority of people complain about how ultimate charactors dont match up to their originals

Hasn't Cap already stated that he worked with Wolverine in WWII? That was how he knew his name...

They should should do some mini's of what If? for the ultimate verse and one that I'd like to see is, What If Magneto succeeded in taking over the world and rule supreme and how would he deal with the Alien invasion that the ultimates was suppose to fight but instead it's magneto with his own team.
What If magneto being the ruler of america had to deal with the liberators?
What If the marvel zombies did cross over the ultimate verse.
What If Gwen stacy still lived and peter dumped MJ for her.
What If the symbiote did take over Peter (different results and yada yada)
What If the Hulk took on magneto's new rule.
What If the X-Men never escaped from weapon X and they still continue with the program.
What If Magneto took on Ultimate Galactus during his rule? (I know alot of story potential he has to deal with if he succeeded in taking over)
What If Reed Richards got Dr. Dooms powers and Doom has gotten Rubber man powers.
It goes on and on, and Personally these stories would be more interesting than wolverines.

"What If Ultimate Hulk vs. Wolverine #3 ever came out?" I guess it's a little unrealistic, but still....

I think it's to soon for that, maybe a few years down the road.

I probably should've worded it better.
But was a vague Cap/Wolverine relationship mentioned at some point?

yeah i beleive it was in ultimate war right before wolverine and cap have a showdown. pretty much cap calls him james and wolverine flips out and wants to know why hes calling him james. then cap makes refrence to fighting alongside him in WWII

You forgot the best part. That Cap called him James to distract him, and then machine gunned his ass. Now that is badass Captain America. :D

Loeb's plans for Ultimate Wolverine sound pretty badass already IMO. He is making him younger than the 616 version by quite a bit, so he was probably a very young man in WWII. And he plans to showcase just how dark a guy he was before Weapon X got a ahold of him and turned him into a living weapon. Sounds kind of like what Daniel Way is doing over in Wolverine: Origins, but probably simplified and less convoluted.
Personally, I'm looking forward to it a lot! Wonder when it will come out?

If you take away Wolverine's training, you take away Wolverine. :/ He'd just be some dude with claws.

He'll still have training, I'm sure, but it will likely be vastly different than the samurai training he received in Japan in the 616 Universe. Probably more military, black ops type training, which I'm sure includes some form of martial arts.

So, what about X-23 then?

Only her claws are coated with adamantium since they had already reached their maximum length.

It's unbreakable metal though... wouldn't it just stunt your growth making the problem mute.

yeah but if you're bones are trying to grow but cant then maybe they would snap under pressure. so you would have an adamantium shell filled with shattered bones

Who said anything about carbon copies? Changes in personality and relationships are one thing. Turning a character into an unskilled brat is suicide. You're talking about ditching everything that makes wolverine Wolverine. Except for the claws. In effect, you're turning him into Kitty Pryde. Madness.

what about the ultimate defenders? they were a complete joke compared to the originals but no one really cared and went into a rage about it. why? because it was a well written story that made an enjoyable and laughable read. what i'm proposing is that he can still be a hardass and a good fighter, but it would just be his nature and not some programming or govt conspiracy.

Theyr'e basically a bunch of Ultimates fans and wannabe-superheroes.
No powers, no skills to speak of.
All they had going for them was Valkyrie's home-made Thor-looking stripper outfit. That and the 16-foot naked guy...
One of the better Ultimates issues.

Maybe this new Ultimate Wolverine will hook up with Ultimate Colossus. That is what Ultimate Colossus wants anyway.
Why did they do that to Colossus, he used to be one of my favorites.

I think Ultimate Colossus got over Wolverine when he found out what he did Cyclops.

Ult. Wolverine threw Cyclops out of a mountain in Savage Land and left him there to die so he could be with Jean again. Cyclops survived, came back, and kicked his ass.
