View Full Version : Could Courtney Cox Have Made a Good Lois Lane

I think of this because she has a show on FX called "Dirt" in which from my understanding, she plays the publisher of a tabloid magazine. She also played an agressive reporter in "Scream." I think that Courtney Cox kind of looks like a young Margot Kidder. Had a Superman movie been made during say the mid-early 1990s, she would've been more suitable for the role. I also think that Kevin Sorbo (from "Hercules" and "Andromeda") could've been an ideal choice for Superman.

Wow...no to both.
I didn't think the casting was the problem with Superman Returns, at all. Sure Bosworth is a little young looking, but that wasn't the problem with the movie.
Routh looks a lot like Reeve, and was a much better actor than tv's Hercules.

I not necessarily talking about "Superman Returns", I'm refering to the 1990s when what would become "Superman Returns" was still in development hell (e.g. when Tim Burton and Nicholas Cage were attached to the project).

Nope. She's a mediocre actress, and she's so meek, I couldn't take her seriously as the "go get 'em" Lois Lane that Kidder or even Bosworth pulled off. And using "Scream" as her reference to playing an aggressive reporter doesn't help, 'cause she sucked to high Heaven in that movie.

I think Cox would've been a decent Lois. I can buy her as being hard-bitten-but-not-bitchy more than I can Teri Hatcher or Kate Bosworth. But then, I thought Bosworth was just horrible for the role so I am probably biased.

Scarlett Johansson would have made a great Lois Lane.
Courtenay Cox, especially at her age, playing opposite Routh... not so much.

Scarlett Johansson would be great at anything. But I have trouble picturing her as a grizzled reporter, as she's pretty much played nothing but intropective, cerebral characters.
She'd make a great Ice if anyone ever made a JLI film. Though I'd much rather see her in the Fire costume.

I think she'd have been decent.
Better than Bosworth, anyway, who just didn't have a clue. Cox could have the edge, though i don't know if she could have been as warm and lovable despite it as Kidder was. (for what it's worth, though, i thought Hatcher was quite a good Lois too).
By the way, over christmas i watched The Hudsucker Proxy (great film); if you want to see how to play lois, you need look no farther than Jennifer Jason Leigh in that film. Amy Archer and Lois Lane are drawing from the same well, so to speak.

The biggest problem with SR was that the studio wanted to continue the legacy of Christopher Reeve instead of starting new. CR was a good Superman but where is it written that the primary characters have to be similar to the original actors? They should have broke with tradition, developed a new direction and had a better villain. IMHO, Courtney Cox as Lois Lane wouldn't have been a bad idea. It certainly couldn't have made that movie any worse.
Ever since I laid eyes on Courtney Cox I have thought she would make an excellent Lois Lane.
Perhaps it was because of some physical resemblance to Margot Kidder ...
I think she had/has the looks and the talent to play Lois.

I think she could have played Lois ten years ago. See the Scream movies.
I maintain that Zooey Deschanel would have been great. She has some Margot Kidder qualities in the same sense that Routh has Reeve-like qualities and Spacey can be Hackman-like when he wants to be.
And just as Spacey can move beyond Hackman's portrayal while drawing from it, Deschanel is a bit prettier and has a stronger camera presence, IMO, than Kidder did in the Superman films. I would have less trouble buying Deschanel as Kidder's Lois after a few years absence if we ignore aging.

I reiterate.
Selma Blair should have been Lois Lane in Superman Returns.
Not Beyond the Pail Bosworth.

Kevin Sorbo as Superman? No, thank you. It's just like Nicolas Cage as Superman for the fortunately cancelled Superman Lives.
Courtney Cox as Lois? Again, no, thank you. She comes across as a spoiled girl to me. Not how I envision Lois (hell, or how she's usually portrayed in comics).
Now, Kate Beckinsale is an entirely different subject...:D

Courtney Cox as Lois I could see. Kevin Sorbo as Superman makes me laugh VERY hard.

Cox reminds me of the animated Lois in the Scream films.
I can see her as an uptown city girl, which strikes me as fairly consistent with MOST of Lois' portrayals -- when she's not more of an army brat, uber sexy (which I think misses some of the point of the character) or a domestic-minded farmer's daughter.

Courtney Cox would have been a perfect Lois Lane. I've always said that. She is similar to Kidder., I'll agree with that. However she seems to be one of those actors that you either love or hate. I'm the former.

While I have no problem with Cox, per se, there's no way that she could've been cast opposite Brandon Routh. If they were doing an older Superman, say with Tim Daly as the Man of Steel, then she'd be fantastic. Had they made the Superman movie with Nicolas Cage ten years ago, she'd have been fine then; but sadly, everyone I've named is too old to play the parts now.

First, I actually really Liked Bosworth's Lois despite the lack of chemistry with Routh.
Second, Did you actually watch "Dirt"? Cox was the least interesting part of the whole show. Her face is permanent stuck in one emotion even when she laughs. And she was unfunny on "Friends".

Not without casting a much older Superman, because if she had been opposite Routh, I would be been slightly creeped out, despite the fact that she is a good looking woman, she is far too old for him. It would be like Superman was going out with someone's mum or older sister.
Kidder and Reeve looked good on screen together and about the same age, and again Routh and Bosworth look as if they are of a similar age, so it worked well for me. I had no idea who Bosworth was, having not seen her in anything before Superman Returns (or if I did it was so unmemorable I instantly forgot) but I think she did well, and thank god they put her in a decent wig and made her a brunette.

Courtney Cox would work nicely if we have an older Supes that look something like Alex Ross' Big Blue :p (Maybe in an Elseworld Supes movie 'Man of Tomorrow' with the story of 'Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?'

I think Courtney Cox would have made a better choice for a sequel to Margot Kidder, Bosworth was okay as her own character but didn't seem at all like she was the same Lois from the movie they were supposedly a somewhat of a sequel to.
The age difference maybe a bit much, but Superman doesn't have to age as fast and he's been out in space in suspended animation. So that could be pulled off.
Of course I think this would have been a great paring:

I hadn't thought of Zooey Deschanel, but she would be good too.

It's true. I once saw a clip of his audition for "Lois & Clark." Still, you can't feel too bad for him, he almost immediately got Hercules, then founded a furniture company, right around the time he jumped to Andromeda.

I thought Courtney Cox would have been great as Lois around the Mid 90's. My Dream team of Superman and Lois would have been Catherine Bell and her co star in JAG who's name escapes me at the moment. If they did this movie just a few years ago, they would have been perfect. They still would have been perfect if they went for an older version of the characters. I also like Rachael McAdams over Kate Boseworth

Yeah, I think Courtney could have done it maybe ten years ago. It's strange I saw this post today because I was watching Superman II the other day, and I was racking my brain trying to figure out who Margot Kidder reminded me of. It dawned on me after awhile that it was CC. (Although Kidder wasn't nearly as pretty in my book.)
By the way, I saw a picture of Courtney the other day and she still looks pretty hot.

I think CC could have been a great Lois . I doubt she'll ever get the chance now though , as she's too old to play a traditional Lois Lane .
I loved Margot Kidder , she'll always be Lois to me . Terry Hatcher was also very good . I didn't care for Bosworth , I felt she was the one bad casting choice in an otherwise excellent cast .

Had there been a Superman movie made about 15 years ago (the early to mid 1990s that you suggest), I think Courtney Cox would have physically looked the part of Lois Lane. I don't know about her acting one way or the other as I've never watched "Friends". However, in terms of acting, I'd say her "Friends" co-star Jennifer Aniston could pull off the Lois Lane role even now. I don't mean with Brandon Routh, but had an actor old enough for it to be believable that he's been an adult Superman for well over six years played the role.
Kevin Sorbo is a much better actor than I think most people give him credit for being but Superman? Physically, he just is not right for the role. He's muscular but tall and lanky. Maybe with his hair cut short and dyed black it wouldn't have been any worse that Dean Cain.

I think a good Lois is one that most people aren't going to like. Lois isn't the sweetest most cuddly character and whomever plays her should realize that she's kind of a [censored] ;)
I don't like frail little soft spoken girls playing Lois. Not at all.

I think Zooey Deschannel seems a little, I don't know, above playing Lois Lane. I might be wrong, but I think she just kind of gives off an air of, "I'm above playing in Superman."

That's interesting because Margo Kidder may have done the best job of portraying a Lois Lane that was a [censored]. Yet, I think she is one of the least popular Lois's and I know the reaction of most people I knew back in the time of Superman and Superman II was that she was the one piece of miscasting that they didn't like in the movies. "He could do so much better than her" was a typical comment. I'll grant that a real reporter has to be a bit pushy to put it mildly and I don't know of any portrayal of her that I'd define as "cuddly" or soft-spoken.

I can honestly put my hand on my heart and say that i never met anyone who didn't love Margot Kidder as Lois. She nailed that role, for me. She got Lois perfectly.
Tough, hard-edged, ascerbic, one of the boys, but if you're patient with her, and you look hard enough, you'll see a silliness and a warmth that it's impossible not to love.
He can do better? possibly. He could have someone sweeter or prettier or nicer or richer. But he doesn't want that. He wants her.
Bosworth was playing Lois in name only. She achieved something closer to an angsty Lana Lang.
