View Full Version : Spider-Man Video Game Megathread

I admitedly have never read the Maximum Carnage crossover, as I wasn't reading comics at the time. But what I did love was the video for SNES, I played it for hours on end, day and night, beat it many times (one trick I found worked well on Carnage was switching back and fourth between Spider-Man & Venom quickly, dealing a few punches, then switching, and so on, for the sake of the temporary invinsibility). And the red cartridge ruled.

Meh, it was kind of weak compared to the original Spider-Man game on Genesis, or it's remake on the Sega CD. Up until the original PlayStation game, those were the only Spider-Man games to really feel like Spider-Man. Hell, the Genesis one, you got cash for taking pictures!

Yeah, I spent an inordinate amount of time playing the original SNES game, I loved it. At one point I was able to beat the entire game as Spider-Man without losing a life. Downloaded an emulator version for PC about and year ago, and while I wasn't able to beat it without losing a life, I did beat the game on my first try. It's like riding a bike really, you never forget.

I used to have the Gensis game you speak of at one point, I could never beat... Venom, I believe it was, on some rooftop.

nah maximum carnage is the best spidey game ever and has one of the best soundtracks for a game ever.
I have to find that game somewhere.

i had the game, it was okay.
the genesis spider-man game based on the cartoon was pretty difficult.
i had some other snes spider-man game, where you could play as spidey and venom as well, separation anxiety. that was my favorite spidey game of that era.

I would save the whole FF for him (the spider slayer on the roof) and pray to God I got lucky.

Weīve had a great game based on the second movie and most people seem to like the Ultimate game to, wonīt buy it. So now I wonder why they wonīt make a game that is based of the 616 version, aka the original, version of Spider-man.
Whoever makes this game could take all the good stuff from the previous games and put them together and do lots of cool stuff.
Hulk got a freakishly cool game based on his 616 version so why not do the same for Spidey? Does anybody agree with me?
This has been the ramblins of a Spider-man fan who wants a game that is based on the 616 version of good old Spidey.

I think that a good Ultimate Spider-Man game (what with the Ultimate line being typically "hipper" and more relatable to a younger audience) sets up a promisisng series of Spider-Man games and makes a 616 Spidey game redundant.
I mean, either way it's Spider-Man. As long as I get to thwip around through the city and beat up familiar bad guys, I personally will be happy.

They can adapt many 616 storylines for a game.Like Mark Millar's Marvel Knights storyline. Think how much ass that would kick!

It would be close. Frankly, I'd also like a few random super villian encounters in those instances when people are calling for help. Nobody big, but people like Speed Demon, or Boomerang that can appear without directly affecting the plot.

What made that game so good?
On top of everything that was already said, I think a big part of the game's appeal was the variety of things you could do.
There were MGS style sneaking missions.
There was platform jumping puzzles.
There was racing across the city (once against the clock and once when you're chasing Venom)
There's a level where you have to climb a building while avoiding an attack chopper.
That's what made the game so much fun for me. Every level you were doing something different than the last.
Other things I liked were the graphics. They look much better (and brighter) compared to the more realistic movie series. The game had better costumes too. You could unlock Symbiote Spidey, Captain Universe Spidey, or even The Amazing Bag-Man.
It even had awesome cameos in it. Captain America, Punisher, Daredevil, Black Cat, and Human Torch if I recall.
Nothing against the other games in the series, but they just aren't as fun to pick up and play.
The first movie game relied far too much on the air combat aspects and combos of the game, but forgot to give the game decent variety or even make the missions very fun.
The second movie game had its free roaming stuff which I'm still on the fence about. The freedom is nice but it saps replayability since you can't just go back and replay your favorite parts (as far as I know, I only finished about half the game).
I haven't played Ultimate Spider-Man yet so I don't know what refinements that brought to the series.

Activision's plans is to release a Spidey-game once a year... so maybe afterwards will be "Ultimate 2" or another "Classic"... but this last statement is guessing...

Are you kidding me? Those games so sucked! I liked the concept though. I'd like to see them redo those with an open storyline with multiple paths (not just one villain and absolutely NO "chase him or he'll get away" crap) and all the costumes Spidey has worn(the Identity Crisis ones especially: imagine missions as Dusk where you infiltrated the underworld, bounching around as Ricochet, etc) and his various transformations (For real this time, not some lame invulerability and unlimited webs: Spider-Hulk, Cosmic Spidey, Spider-Phoenix, etc.) Oh, and you'd actually have to go to school, work, take MJ to dinner(yeah, like that would ever happen). I'd so buy that one.

There already was a great 616 Spider-Man game. it was on the PSX, N64 and Dreamcast and it was called...Spider-Man.
The game had the single greatest code ever: What-If mode
If you put in 'Uatusees' as a password (Uatu, What-If. Get it?) and you'll get the What If mode. All of the dialogue is different, there are more cameos, some boss fights were slightly different as well.
It was easily worth playing through the game again for.
Oh yeah, and if you put in a curse word as a password, Spidey will punch it and turn it into a random word.

What's so wrong with it?
The presentation is generic.
The character select screen, the music, the win/loss screens and the sound effects could be put in any other fighting game. Nobody would really notice.
Compare this to Marvel Superheroes where all of the stages were character specific (and looked like a place where that character would fight at), the win/loss screens used comic art, and the music fits each stage almost perfectly.
MvC2 feels more like a hyper-fast Street Fighter game with a bunch of bonus Marvel characters.
I know that good gameplay is more important than staying true to the liscence, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't shoot for both.
Alan2099

Actually, that's a very good answer. The music and level design of Marvel vs Capcom 2 really disapointed me as well. It also bugged me that they didn't have actual endings.

Considering the 52 characters and cross-over from all the different universes, it's no wonder that Capcom didn't bother putting a story in the game.
I mean, what possible reason would Megaman, Ryu, and Thanos have for working together?

Wow...talking about the original Spiderman games on PS1!!
The first one was fantastic, but I felt the second one was sort of missing something. I remember my favorite level being the one where you have to run from the Helicopter! I also liked the What If? mode because cameos from Submariner, Silver Surfer, and Ghost Rider can all be seen! BTW, the Spidey games for PS1 were NOT based off the FOX cartoon. That show had long since run it's course by the time the games came out. They were based on the comics. I know that because instead of putting Scorpion in his classic green suit, they had him in that hideous techno geek suit he wore during the aftermath of The Gathering of 7.

I pretty much thought Spider-man 2 was missing something myself. For one, the plot didn't seem as well held together. Especially using Electro as the last boss.
I mean a combination of Dr. octopus and Carnage, that's a great boss idea. Super owered Electro just doesn't have the feel punch.

Since 2000 Activision has helped make some brilliant Spider-Man games. What I want to know is what do you guys think is the best Spider-Man game of all time? My favourite Spider-Man game of all time is Spider-Man on the first Playstation. The story was brilliant, the gameplay was just amazing and there was so much replay value and so many cool extras to unlock. The story is mainly why I think Spider-Man is the best Spider-Man game of all time not only that it's also my favourite game of all time. It was something new and fresh in a Spider-Man game, I just never got tired of playing it well I've never really been fed up of playing any Spider-Man game. The Mega Drive Spider-man came where you end up beating the Kingpin and got cash for Photos was great. (played the game for the Game Gear as well, quite fun)
Maximum Carnage I only ever rented (could never find it to buy) what I saw of it was amazing, always found it better playing as Spider-man than Venom.
Separation Anxiety was amazing, completed that quite a few times, better playing as Venom than Spider-man this time, nice guest appearances by a ridiculously overpowered Daredevil (I love the guy but the moves he was pulling??)
Spider-man for the PS was great, will be replaying that soon as only just bought Spider-man 2 Enter: Electro.
Spider-man The Movie for PS2 was fantastic, except for the race against time levels, hate those.
Haven't played Spider-man 2 for the PS2 yet but want to very much
Spider-man/X-men IIRC for the Megadrive was fun if really difficult I don't think I managed to beat like the second level for most of the characters.

Separation Anxiety was my favorite from that generation of games, but Spider-Man for PS1 is my favortie spidey game of all. it has everything from a great storyline, plenty of mini-games, heaps of stuff to collect and being able to change suits was an awesome idea for a spidey game.

I loved this game. I've played Maximum Carnage on the Genesis (best 16-bit Spider-Man game in my opinion), Separation Anxiety on the SNES, and Spider-Man (vs The Kingpin) on the Genesis (cool concept with taking pictures, but the game itself was so-so for me).

nah maximum carnage is the best spidey game ever and has one of the best soundtracks for a game ever.
I have to find that game somewhere.
best part was on the first level at the boss if you timed it right you could kill both the chicks in one blow
Dude, Green Jelly owned in this game. I have the Maximum Carnage song on my mp3 player. God this was the best spiderman side scrolling game i ever played. Separation Anxiety had bad graphics, stupid story and it was boring. Spiderman the Animated series game is my second choice for kick ass side scrolling game. This game makes double dragon like stupid man...Maximum carnage and The animated series...best 2d spidey games ever...

Meh, it was kind of weak compared to the original Spider-Man game on Genesis, or it's remake on the Sega CD. Up until the original PlayStation game, those were the only Spider-Man games to really feel like Spider-Man. Hell, the Genesis one, you got cash for taking pictures!
Hey, did you ever beat that game? If you did please tell me how you beat Kingpin. To this very day I still can't beat him. I've tried everything to hurt him and nothing works.

Hey, did you ever beat that game? If you did please tell me how you beat Kingpin. To this very day I still can't beat him. I've tried everything to hurt him and nothing works.
You really have to jump kick him in like the head/back area to beat him. It's tough at first, but once you get the hang of it, you'll kick his fat ass easily.
At any rate, to date, my favorite Spiderman game is Spiderman for Playstation. Totally awesome game, and I did manage to beat it all by myself without help from codes or anything like that.
Another game I loved, but cuss because I can never find it was "Spiderman the arcade game!" You had your choice between Spiderman, Black Cat, Submariner(?), and Hawkeye (???????). You did battle with countless Spidey villains, eventually battling Dr. Doom himself. I pray to god that one day I'll be able to download this on cpu, because trying to buy the arcade game itself is next to impossible with my meager wage. (Tends to go anywhere from $599.00 to as high as $999.99 on Ebay)

I was just thinking the other day about a game i had for the ZX Spectrum. It was a spidey game, i remember sandman featuring. It would have been mid to late 80's. A bit of an adventure game.
Think it might have been the first spider purchase i made. I was probably about 10.
If anybbody knows anything about the game i'd like to know

What is the best Spidey game for the original Playstation?
Sean Whitmore

The first one by Activision...just called Spider-Man, I believe...was excellent. The best Spidey game there'd been up till that point (Until Spder-Man 2 and Ultimate Spider-Man debuted with their GTA-style gameplay.)
Great dialogue, voice acting, storyline, lots of villains, and plenty of cool cheats that let you play in almost every costume Spidey has ever worn.

Spider-Man 2 is the best spidey game out there, followed closely by Spider-Man 1 (because of the different costumes, and you can be the green goblin, which was pretty friggin sweet)
I'd say that Ult. Spider-Man wasn't great cause it was way too easy and too short. But I did like the style of it and the "comic book" style it had to it to mirror the book. But it was nice to have a new spidey game out to play.
BUT even though it won't be out for months Spider-Man 3 will be the best spidey game, no contest.

"Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro" wasn't bad either. I loved the humor of it all - Jameson credits Thor with defeating Electro? Great stuff. But the bosses in that game were kind of annoying. Gotta say, though - I loved doing the Scorpion fight trying not to throw punches in order to get the insulated outfit. Problem was, the "Create-a-Spider" feature tended to let you get too strong, too fast. Super jump height + Super Web Swing + Double Damage AND Electricity Damage weakened? There we had the living incarnation of "Way too Easy," although collecting the comics was still a challenge.

"Spider-Man" the first activison was the best Spider-Man game ever, ever.
Sadly by today's standards the graphics are considered horrible. Every Spider-Man game they make I hope will compare to that game, few come close.
Venom

Without a doubt it's Spider-Man on the Playstation. It's the greatest game ever. Honest to God I must've played the storyline over 100 times and I never got bored of it. I unlocked everything on that game except the Bagman costume, so I just used the cheat to get him.
The second best Spidey game has got to be Ultimate Spider-Man. There were so many villains and they introduced Ultimate exclusive versions that weren’t even in the comics yet. And best of all you could play as Venom.
Third is Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro. Brilliant sequel but not enough villains and the game had less levels. There was lots more extras this time round which I like very much. Nice touch on the Parker's Portfolio of boss battles drawn by different artists on different difficulties.
Fourth is the Spider-Man Movie game. I love games that collect points and use them to buy bonuses. I've actually got all the points for every single level in the game which I must say wasn't easy at all, especially the perfect points and combat style points. They should've given you a bonus extra for getting all the points in the game instead of stopping at 50,000.
Last but not least Spider-Man The Movie 2. Brilliant change of direction to make the game GTA like but the thing that lets this game down is that it's bloody too hard. This has got to be one of the few games that has stressed me out the most. When I buy a game I won't stop until I've fully completed it. I've had this game for over 2 years now and I still haven't finished it. And it's all because of those last 15 damn races. They're the worst feature in the entire game. Please for the love of God don't put races in the next Spider-Man game.
"Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro" wasn't bad either. I loved the humor of it all - Jameson credits Thor with defeating Electro? Great stuff.
The reason for that is, the original ending to the game basically Thor shows up after Spider-Man has defeated Electro in the classic "guest star shows up too late to help the hero." They talk for a bit before Thor flies away. Yet he uses lightning to fry the machine Electro used to make him so powerful. (Why isn't clear.) The video used to be up on Actvision's website I think.
Don't know why they took it out of the game. Maybe because it made the background look too much like the Twin Towers (the last level in the game was supposed to be a fight on the World Trade Centers, but they had to change that after 9/11.)
What disapointed me about Spidey 2 was they had the Bettle in a load of cut scenes, but you never actually fight him. It really seemed that there was stuff they just cut out of Spidey 2, to get it released on time.
All that being said, the first Spidey game on the PSX was amazing.

It was very well crafted and felt like a fun comic story.

Thats true I forgot all about Octo-Carnage, I wish you could have fought him instead of just running away.
Although I think SM-Movie:2 is the best game I really loved the Enter Elec. game and the levels where you had to run away from the helecopter, that was a blast.
And even though I didn't like the Ultimate SM that much at all (too easy/short, but it had a great story) I really liked how you could be fighting on the ground and out of no where you'd have to fight Shocker or I think Boomerang as a random street thug, I hope the next game uses this idea to make the game more interesting after you beat it and have random villian battles with people like Vulture, Shocker, Kraven, Rhino, Jack-O-Lantern, Beetle and others.
The 2nd PS2 game thats out gets my vote..although the original for Ps has some fun moments. im still waiting to try out USM though

That was by far the biggest letdown in that game. They give the fanboys such a ridiculously cool character and the entire final sequence is just running from him. How hard would it have been to let you get some licks in?

Spider-Man game on the PS1. Amazing game, with so many great costumes, unlockables, amazing voice talent, and a great gallery of villains, including Doc Ock, Venom, Carnage, Mysterio, Rhino, Scorpion, and a cameo from the Lizard.

I wish some of these had a bit more description to them. Which one was the Spiderman for the old Genesis Game?
I really liked that one. You had the option to take "pictures" during each level which were essentially screen shots. Then the better the pictures.... the more money at the end of the level. The more money... the more Web fluid you could get for the NEXT Level :)
What a cool way to bring in Pete and the Daily bugle!
As it is, I have to say movie Spidey 2. Lots of options, and Webswinging, and you actually START in the real spidey costume unlike the first Spidey game.
Also LOVED the original Activision SPidey game for PS1. Didn't hold up well to time though.

*Spider-Man 3 for the PC is my No.1 Spider-Man game:
.Select a mission out of many
.Save some levels (too bad this only happens to photo missions, MJ thrill ride 2&3, Dewolff 2&3 & Connors1&2) if you like for after beating Venom
.First time you can move the combat to air in an awesome way, and the battle is fluid
.Wallsprint, dual swing, poleswing, swim in central park lakes and the sea
.Best music for a Spider-Man game
.3 special moves for each suit
.You can copy the save file to use it later on if you felt like it
.Bomb squad Spider-Man
.Extra outline plots
.Keyboard gives a wide range of control as one wishes
.Take control of some enemies: Rhino, Scorpion, Carlyle airborne soldiers
.Chase and stop choppers
.Photograph whenever you like, too bad you can't cash in on it or place your automatic camera
.Play the levels except the first and the turtorials once more wearing black
.Play with Harry
.Scare MJ
.Unlike previous games: You don't have to go through a series of outside missions to unlock story missions
.Enter some buildings & move through the subway system
Later games on in my fave list:
*Ultimate Spider-Man:
.Play controlling Venom and Spidey
.Bounce on walls both in combat and normally
.First time for me to play free roaming Spider-Man
.Great Spider-Man voice with fun jokes
*Spider-Man (PS1/PC/SDC/N64):
.First Spider-Man VG I play and enjoy
.Venom rocks in that game, beats every other of his counterparts in comics or other materials
.Collect covers
.You can save web-cartridges & mdeicines if your in full health and use them when needed before the mission ends
*Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro:
.Vast improvement to its predecessor
.Cool villans
.No fog, you have soem levels on the street
*Spider-Man 2: GBA game:
.Didn't play the PS2 version of this game, but it is vast improvement on the previous game and very fun for a handheld console, and it is AWESOOOME
*Amazing Spider-Man GBP: Purely entertaining and makes me happy after playing 10 levels in a Superman game that ends only with "Well Done Superman" and absolutely no story, the music of this game is fun too
*SM & V: MC: Everything "Don't pee in the (Dead)Pool" says about it is 100% truth
