Cheerios Giveaway sets...what were they?

In the 1950s, there seem to be quite a few Walt Disney Comics 'Cheerios Giveaway sets'. Some of these featured stories involving the work of well known artists like Dick Moores and have never been reprinted elsewhere. What excatly were these sets? Was there a conventional comic book involved at all? I have also heard 3-D mentioned and so am confused.

I'd be grateful if someone has a URL explaining these Cheerios Giveaways.
