View Full Version : "Sensational" better than "Amazing"?

In nearly twenty years of collecting and reading comics I was never a big fan of any Spider-Man series. Nothing against the characters or creative staff, I think it just suffered from having too many titles and they always seemed to crossover. Growing up I never had the $$$ to buy two or three extra titles just to get a complete arc. I started collecting ASM around the time of the first movie and SSM since its inception.
Since Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa took over on "Sensational" I feel that his story telling as risen above what JMS has done on "Amazing". I enjoy both titles so I'm not by any means saying there is any evident quality issue with "Amazing". I don't know if it may have to do with what each writer is obligated to do in the context of "Civil War" or maybe just better overall writing.
I feel that RAS has an excellent grasp on the core characters of the mythos and is really doing a bang up job on the book. I know he had a run on MKFF and was supposed to replace Waid on FF until the public outcry got to Marvel.
So does anybody else feel that SSM has of lately been a better book that ASM?

I've personally enjoyed 'Amazing's' Civil War tie in tremendously, so I'm kinda on the fence on this one.

SSM's been okay, I think, but that's about as far as it goes. The "Deadly Foes" three-parter was fun, but not exactly meaty. I feel it lacks the fun of Friendly and the weight of Amazing.

I've only picked up the Clayton Crain Unmasked issue which was good but overall the combination of Medina's art alongside the stories that are just OK, Amazing and FNS are way better since they're tied to both Civil War which is like pretty important and The Other stuff alongside some great cast building.

For me right now Amazing and Sensational are tied with Friendly close behind them. I think that the three series just have different writing styles and so are liked by people differently. I think that both Amazing and Sensational are well written stories.

Sensational's good and fans enjoy it (its superior sales to FNSM prove that) but I'm enjoying Amazing more at the moment, and believe it will be better remembered in ten years.

Amazing will always be the best title as I feel the best stories have come out it. It introduces new villains now and again and the stories have more of an impact on Spider-Man continuity.
Friendly Neighbourhood is one of the most under appreciated titles at Marvel. Peter David is a top quality writer and has written some of the best Spider-Man stories. (The Death Of Jean DeWolff) It really does have an old school feel to it as well with the witty humour and a whole new supporting cast. Classic villains are brought back and used in new and interesting ways too.
Sensational is a really good title but honestly it's really more overrated than it should be credited for. How can this title keep getting better sales than Friendly Neighbourhood?

In my opinion I reckon Friendly Neighbourhood uses the villains better than in Sensational hence my opinion and not a fact. I like Sensational but in my opinion I think Friendly Neighbourhood should be doing better as it's more related to old-school Spidey and a lot of members on this forum have been saying how they want that in a Spider-Man comic.

Amazing for me, it's the main, core Spidey title. I used to read Sensational, but I dropped it because I couldn't afford buying it anymore. Amazing for me please.

Sensational Spider-Man annoys me a lot because it isn't particularly well written, it doesn't seem to be doing anything interesting. Some villains turn up, Spidey fights them, the end. The whole Feral storyline or Deadly Foes can be summed up like that. Roberto A-S seems to think we should be impressed just because he used Puma and Will O' The Wisp, so he doesn't need to bother writing a real plot around them.
Having said that, the Unmasked issue by Crain was good, and I've read the MJ issue, and that was good too. So I may have a turn around, but he needs to have his next arc involve a more complex plot than "Pile on!!!"

I honestly think that they all three have really good stories and that is what keeps me going back but Sensational and Amazing have better art than Friendly. I don't like how Friendly is drawn but I think it is a good book overall.

I like Sensational, but its the low man on the Spidey totem pole in my opinion.
For me, its ASM, then FNSM, then SSM. Amazing has been....amazing lately, IMHO, and FNSM is always a whole lot of fun, I <3 me some Peter David. The last couple character driven issues of SSM have been excellent, but "Deadly Foes" wasnt good for me at all. And Medina's Spider-Man I like a lot, but every other character, ESPECIALLY the Black Cat, look terrible.

Sensational may appeal better to the vast majority of Spider-Man readers who don't check out comic book websites.
And Amazing tops both.

Absoloutely no way, worst by far IMO.
I love ASM for serious, great stories.
I love FNSM for fun, GREAT stories- both neck in neck at 9/10 titles IMO.
I think SSM is average, mediocre even.

Sensational is better than Amazing for me. The Feral story was awesome!! And the unmasked Doc Ock fight was incredible, as well as the recent Aunt May-Peter unmasked storyline.
Amazing feels bogged down telling the significant issues while Sensational has fun with the unkasking.
And FNSM has been awesome for a long time now. The latest Vulture issue was great with his backstory.
Roberto Aguirre Sacassa is one of my favorite Marvel writers and i would have loved to read him on the main FF title! I hope he works for Marvel for a looong time.

I like Sensational more than Amazing.
It just feels more like a classic Spider-man book IMO. Sacassa has a great feel for what makes a good Spider-man story and is able to mix the elements of drama, action and humor better than PAD and JMS, at least IMO.
And I'm probably one of the few who prefers Medina's art over Crain's. I just think that it's more vibrant and alive. Medina espcially does brilliant action-scenes and I just overall like his art-style. It fits a Spider-man comic.

Add me to that list. I'll take Medina's goofy-looking human features over Crain's horrifying figures any day.
