While at the conventions I do a lot of sketches that don't see print anywhere! They are drawn on the spot and whisked away to a private collection. I love it that these pieces are given a loving home, but they also need to be shared and enjoyed by everyone!
THAT'S WHAT THIS POST IS ALL ABOUT!
Every two weeks I"ll update the link below to display a different convention drawing! If you have one of my convention sketches, or even a full blown commission, send me a scan and I'll be sure share!

Whew!.. I hope that everyone had a great holiday and is saving up their energy for a fine New Years Eve ( .. c'mon , really... Does the New Year's Eve party every really live up to the hype...)

Anyway I've been a bit behind on my sketch updates so I decided that I'd include 2 pieces this time!
The first is a real favorite of mine that I've been saving. This is a Wonder Woman that I did for a fan that I met at Heroes con this year! It's a supercool moody piece that will appear in my new sketchbook in all it's hi-res glory!... love that lighting! Since I'm talking about the sketchbook on line here anyway, I may as well show off a few of the pieces that will be featured in the book!

The next is a Colossus piece for my good friend Billy- a long time supporter of my work and local comics guru here in Indianapolis. Billy and I will be making arrangements for me to sign at his comic shop on Free Comic Book Day 2007... I'll see if I can convince Billy to bring the original to his shop to show it off then!

More art to come!

ya know, I've kinda noticed, much like your version of 'Catwoman', your raw pics tend to show like, a more evil, or dark side of the characters, no?

You know.. I've had alot of people tell me that my pieces can be rather dark. The truth is that I use alot of solid blacks, unlike most modern comic artists that simply use line art and rely on the colorist to give the scene it's depth. I'm a fan of alot of European comics where large blacks are still being used. Whenever I see an old Alex Toth piece with strong blacks it just knocks my socks off... To me a good piece of comic art should have volume and be easy to read in black and white.

As alot of you know, my next issue of Shiver in the Dark is going to be full color unlike the first issues which featured black and white interriors... I've had a lot of people tell me that they like would like the see Shiver in the Dark STAY black and white as they like the look and feel. Hearing that tells me that they the art has all the depth and volume in black and white that most readers expect from a color comic... I say it comes from all the large blacks and whites in contrast!

..aren' collossus and wonder woman evil anyway..?

Actually, I think your pieces with minimal/simple linework are very powerful.

haha. ;) interesting. the thing i notice about the way you use your darks though is in a very 'active' way. it's like your shading has movement and is a part of the picture, it's not used to just darken an area.

Great pics, I'm unfamiliar with your work but I love the tones you get with your wash, especially that WW pic. I see some Sienkiewicz influence. I really love that white on WW's leg! lol I'm an artist too so I tend to notice things like that.
