I'm personally stuck between Baldur's Gate II and Planescape:Torment.

Same.
Love those damn games.
I think my first rpg was probably....well, it was dragon warrior, but the first one i played extensively was Final Fantasy Legend for gameboy. RPG wasn't a set term yet, since basicly no one in america played rpgs, so it was just "One of those games with talking." I actually remeber being little alex and asking the clerk at the store for :One of those games where they talk a lot"
Then the snes final fantasies, 3 being my favorite to this day. Then FF7, and 8 (which i didn't care for.)
I really thought they were the most amazing games, until i played Fallout. FF7 probably came out after, i can't remeber, but Fallout was unlike any game i'd ever played. You weren't told the story through cutscenes or long pieces of text, you actually participated. You didn't have to go from a, to b, to c, but it wasn't unwieldy.

For PC I think I'd probably have to go with Baldur's Gate 2 (and expansion). One was OK, but 2 really just knocked it outta the park.

Planescape: Torment was awesome as well, though.

For console: Probably FF IV (II on the SNES) edging out VI(III) by a hair. Though some of the later-series volumes (X and XII specifically) are excellent as well.

Since we've officially seperated them categorically into PC and Console now I'll stick with the same two in my original post for PC and for console it would probably be...shoot..uhmm...Suikoden 2.

It's either Fallout and Fallout II or Planescape: Torment for me. Both for the moral choices one is able to make, Fallout games for the freedom and gameplay system and Planescape for the immersive story.

On consoles? It's much harder. Maybe the Suikoden series or if I'm feeling nostalgic, Dragon Warrior games.

Baldur's Gate 2 was great, but I never finished it; 3 different playthroughs died on the vine around chapters 5-7, largely due to my old Pentium 2 gasping for life at the lush graphics. Got the expansion, which I never used except to upgrade my regular install for the level caps...

Morrowind was until Oblivion came out. Best and most involved RPG ever created

The two Shin Megami Digital devil games in terms of story. Fable in terms of game play. Oblivion for the best of both worlds but only if you have a kick ass PC that can pull off the graphics on the higest settings. I haven't played the 360 version so I can't comment on the port.

Console: Earthbound

PC: Fallout

PC: Neverwinter's Night Platnium Edition.

Console: I guess it depends, I've probably put more time in ff7 than any other RPG I've ever played namely because I kept playing it over and over.
But in terms of enjoyability, either Shining Force 2 or Warsong.

PC: Neverwinter's Night Platnium Edition.

Not the best I've ever played, but Deekin may just be my favorite RPG character ever. I could write entire libraries of Deekin novels.

PC: Neverwinter Nights (for its multiplayer value), Neverwinter Nights 2 (for taking a good game and making it better) Oblivion
Console: Zelda Ocarina of Time, FF7

I'd have to say Chrono Trigger tops my list. With FF 6(3 in the U.S.) and Super Mario RPG (snes) following close behind. The super nintendo had some great ones.

Im going to be the chav and say GTA: San Andreas, and to me it was an RPG because I was more interested in finding out where the story went that with blowing stuff up and pimping whores.

Dungeons and Dragons for real RP.

Video game-wise, it's too close to call.

Planescape: Torment
Baldur's Gate 2
Final Fantasy 3

Console games? I don't play them.

PC games?: I haven't played many, but my favorite is probably Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Once I installed the patches, it was a pretty great game. Up through maybe the first 3/4 of the game, there are often multiple ways to handle situations... social abilities, problem-solving, stealth or combat. The final quarter of the game skews more heavily towards combat.

Tabletop rpgs? Call of Cthulhu. Since the opposition is potentially overwhelmingly destructive and powerful, the players need to do more role-playing, planning and problem-solving, or else get wiped out. Plus, insane characters present some interesting role-playing opportunities.

D&D may have been the first and most popular rpg, but it isn't the best. The system is too complex, forcing players to spend too much time talking about rules and not enough time actually role-playing. As characters become more powerful, the personalities tend to get overshadowed by the spells and magic items that those characters wield. And resurrection magic makes death cheap and annoying, instead of a serious threat to be avoided.

Live action rpg: Vampire: the Masquerade. It turns out that a lot of women are fascinated by vampires, so it's easier to get them to role-play vampires than most other types of characters. Imo, any form of role-playing that manages to get women interested in role-playing is a good thing. Plus, the World of Darkness is a fantastic setting, and the intricate vampire politics offer plenty of role-playing possibilities.

Among console games, I'd say Mercenaries, Spider-Man 2 or the "Dark Alliance" engine games: Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance I & 2, Champions of Norrath 1 & 2.

Man those Fallout games were amazing, I never got a chance to play them as much as they deserved though.

I'll say: Suikoden II
Chrono Trigger
FFIV
