Small Question About Magnetism

I just had a question I wanted to clear up because its been bugging me for a while now. You know how Magneto is able to put electromagnetic sheilds up to protect him from most projectlie energy attacks? Since people like Static from Static Shock and Polaris have the same abilities as him (controling and manipulating electromagnetic fields) shouldn't they be able to do the same thing? Or is it a matter of how much power a electromagnetic shield uses and it just overwhelms them?

I don't keep up with Static but Polaris has always used magnetic shields over the years. It just isn't as efficent as a Magneto's or Exodus'.

I'd assume it's practice. Mags has been at this a LOT longer.
