Saw just now on Tom Spurgeon's Comics Reporter website that today marks the 85th birthday of John Severin, my favorite comics artist of all time (ranking above even his sister, Marie, & Russ Heath).

As it happens, quite fittingly, one of his covers will adorn my No. 1 pick four days hence in the Classic Comics Christmas thread (as was pretty much the case last year as well, as the cover of my fave comic ever featured his characteristically strong inks over Dick Ayers' pencils), Photobucket willin' & the crick don't rise.

An impromptu (since I'm actually supposed to be working) cover gallery --

I loved John Severin's work in The Rawhide Kid and other Westerns.

He was one of the few artists who could correctly draw firearms used in the Old West.

He brought the same precision to the war books he drew for Marvel.

Happy birthday, John!

Happy Birthday to the Great John Severin. I love all the work he has done in comics.

I started reading the Hulk when he was inking Herb Trimpe, so that is my first memory of his work.

Just the other day I was looking around the GCD and saw all the great covers he did for Prize Western comics. Now there is a series that should be collected.

Let's not ignore his looooooong and prolific relationship with CRACKED Magazine.

The man is without a doubt my very favorite "historical" artist of all time, with only the late Jack Jackson in the same league.

His work is simply brilliant.

And I always loved Cracked.

Happy Birthday Mr. Severin.

Couldn't agree more.

Happy Birthday, John.
