I love that line.

I actually get this, but only because I read "The Guardian" and once, a while ago, read an Elizabeth George novel where she explained the whole Ashes thing.

I still don't understand cricket in general, though.

There was a horrible moment in the pub on Saturday when they changed over to cricket instead of the football. Man, you never heard such screaming.

All I know is I woke up yesterday, I flipped on the tv without any idea what time it was, and they were announcing that West Ham had just defeated United, 1-0. I was like, "What?!"

So, I was in a strange, parallel universe all day yesterday anyway.

Yeah... this is the main difference between Ireland and England as I see it. The English play Cricket, which involves people batting a ball, trying to hit a bunch of sticks, and winning ashes. The Irish play Hurling, which is a lot like field hockey, except the sticks are more clublike, with metal bands around the end, and you're allowed pick up and carry the little ball in your hand, and toss the ball up in the air before swinging and hitting it to make it move across the field, and basically there's a lot of people swinging around these big heavy metal-wrapped clubs around head level, trying to knock the ball out of someone's hand, or hit the ball, or (let's be honest) hit some guy in the head. And almost nobody wears a helmet (except for the pansies). Cricket rarely has injuries. Hurling rarely doesn't.

So, knowing the Aussies as I do... dudes, why the hell are you playing Cricket and not Hurling?

On a sad note, Shane Warne has announced he'll retire from Test cricket after the Sydney match and Glenn McGrath is rumoured to be thinking likewise.

They'll be missed.

On anther sad note no one in America cares. I never heard of this, and I laugh as I type this, sport until yesterday.

I was a bad joke on my part. I'm actually interested in the mechanics of the sport particularly the way the swing the paddle. I couldn't figure out why they would swing it like they were trying to hit a home run in one pitch but then hit the pall with a upside down motion in the next pitch.

I've been looking at the sport on Youtube and I can't figure it out. It's like a more rapid fun version of Baseball but I don't think that quite right.

I’ve been keeping an eye on it, simply because my telly barely moves off Sky Sports News and it comes on amidst the footie stuff I crave. I've been wishing them well and I thought a few times they were going for it, then seemingly Warne turned into a God and really went for it. That strength and drive we were lacking at the end of the day. They wanted it. We seemingly didn't or were intimidated by the Aussie drive.

As a lil aside - All the jumping up and down when we won the ashes last time was beyond me – and shows just how stupid the English public are. In a competition with only TWO TEAMS, we win it after a zillion years and everyone goes mad, buses through the streets, people waving flags. Er..two teams.

I’m a Man City fan and occasionally we beat United, but for the love of all things Holy…!

*Rolls eyes*

Thank fuck for that.

We might be able to start winning the Ashes more than once every other decade now.

There was a moment where an Aussie fielder dropped a catch and Warne stared at him in such a way that the fielding might well have exploded from the sheer intensity.

My dad was saying the other night that there was a press conference and a journo asked Shane what he'd do if he found out the world was about to end and he replied "Find the most gorgeous girl I could and shag her"

Did you hear the press conference? Someone asked him how he'll celebrate after the Sydney Test and he replied "Have a few beers ad a couple of cigarettes."

Another legend is about to pull the pin.

Glenn McGrath will make 2007 his last year in all competitive cricket.
