Hey
On amazon.com, you can order Absolute Planetary Vol. 1 rigth now for the original price. But on DC/Wildstorms website, that there are no plans for a reprint. Do anyone know whats happening? Did Amazon screw up, or are we lucky enough to get a reprint? Copies are still selling at Ebay for $300.

Amazon lists everything, even when it's virtually impossible for them to get it. Last impossible item they had was the 500+ page Ptolus book, by Monte Cook. It was an exclusive deal by Monte's company and it would not be sold anywhere but there. Amazon had it listed with a nice 15% discount. After a few emails to Monte, they took it down.

It has been listed as unavailable for ages, and then, on the 4th of december, it became available again.
I wrote customer services, and they insisted on them being able to deliver. But I doubt they actually contacted the publisher.
Anywho, here's hoping:)

I went ahead and ordered it. It says it will take 4-6 weeks to ship, so I'll let everyone know when/if it actually comes in. If this is for real, then all I'll have to do is find an Absolute Planetary v1 for cover and I'll have all my must-have Absolute editions!

according to DC, in their most recent Ask Wildstorm section on the website, there are NO plans to reprint the Absolute Editions that are out of print, although they said that they MAY explore the idea when issue 27 of Planetary is released and they start working on the Vol. 2 Absolute Edition. Until then though, there is no chance of it happening

I hate to break it to you, but that date's going to keep getting pushed back and back.
They don't have it and aren't going to get it.
Same pattern happened to me when I bought a variant Marvel Legends figure off them years ago.

Amazon are terrible like that. I've ordered books from them listed as 1-2 weeks. They've then sent me emails saying it's been delayed and will take 8 weeks - but the books are still listed as 1-2 weeks. Then they've cancelled the order saying the books are unavailable and the website is still saying 1-2 weeks.

I wrote Amazon a pretty disgruntled mail about the title being available. Now I recieved a personal answer, that they did check the supplier, and assure me they can deliver the title, but with delays.
Smokeblowing? I don't know. But they seem sure of themselves.

Since I ordered this on Dec. 27, I haven't received any delayed shipping notifications. It's always been:
Delivery estimate: January 31, 2007 - February 15, 2007
the way I look at is that if I end up getting it, great! I didn't have to pay the horrible eBay prices for it. If I don't get it, oh well, I didn't actually need to spend the $50 anyways.

I called and the operator assured me that they had a shipment of these books coming in, but where could they be coming from? It's out of print. And I think the operator was in India, so it's not like she can just take a gander in the warehouse.
Eh, if nothing else, I got a $5 credit to my next purchase since I've been waiting for so long.

The main reason for me was that I wasn't buying TPBs or collected editions at the time. I was a die-hard single issue buyer.
Then circumstances forced me to sell my entire collection. Since then I've started buying, trading, and reading TPBs and HC collected editions to rebuild my collection, and when I came across this Absolute Edition on Amazon, I had to chance it. And hey, if it doesn't happen, that's $50 that I didn't end up spending, and I'll just buy it on eBay when I've got $150 to blow.

If you've got time, give Amazon a call to see what's up with the change in shipping dates. I did that, and they gave me a $5 credit on my next purchase. Not much, I know, but hey, if you order from Amazon regularly, that's five less bucks you'll pay for something.

Well, I just canceled my order. I was using a gift card to buy it, and I hated that I didn't have anything in my hands RIGHT NOW to show for the card, which I used 2 months ago. So I canceled the order and got New X-Men Omnibus instead. Anybody who ordered this, you'll have to let me know if/when it arrives. Then I'll kick myself for not being more patient.

It's not really their fault. Stuff goes out of print. That 4-6 week waiting period is to see if they can get any extra books from from the publisher.
You might want to try the used and new bin. Sometimes it's a little more but you get it a lot faster. And it's better to order it before the seller finds out the book is out of stock and jacks up the price.

No, but they should know when a product is out of print. To advertise as though they have the product ready to ship, and only later, after ordering, reveal that you'll have to wait 1-2 months for said item? That's ridiculous.
vazel
03-29-2007, 02:05 PM
When a product says it'll ship in 4 to 6 weeks that means they don't have the product ready to ship but they will try to get it for you. If you don't want to wait that long then don't order it, try to get it from someplace else. Chances are Amazon may not even be able to get it for you as was proved with the people in this thread that tried to order Absolute Planetary.

No it's the publishers job to let Amazon know something is out of print and the only way they will do that is Amazon tries to order more which is usually the result of someone like wanting to order something. Amazon sells thousands of products. They can't keep track of everything that's avaliable.
They are trying to get that book to you. It's not like they are sitting on their ass about it. If they can't get it they will let you know and won't charge you. I've done the month or two wait and sometimes it paid off and sometimes it didn't. It works the same if you tried to order a book through your LCS, Barnes & Nobles or whatever.
It sucks it works that way but that's what happens especially with comic trades which have low print runs to begin with. You are talking about a book that was published six years ago and isn't a big seller (and also vol. 5 in a series a book which probably had the lowest orders). Chances are high that it won't be in stock.

I'm also finding that out with New X-Men Omnibus. But if I have to cancel this order too, that doesn't mean I'll quit shopping at Amazon. That just means I'll make sure that the book I want to order has a guaranteed immediate or next day ship.

One thing I will blame Amazon for (the uk version at least) is that they don't update their pages.
I've ordered books that were saying 1-2 weeks, and then after a couple of weeks had an email saying it'll take a further 4-6 weeks. This isn't too bad, but when I go and look at the book on their site it's still saying 1-2 weeks so the next person who tries to order it will get exactly the same thing.
