Guess what I got in the mail today?

The return receipt for my certified letter that I mailed to Rick Olney last week. It was signed for on the 13th; what day did Dickless change the promo about the Unscrewed glass?

Clearly it's a clever ploy by his legal teams to lull you into complacency.

Back in the late Seventies, a friend of mine subscribed to SUPER FRIENDS -- in the name of his cat.

Shortly thereafter, "You have been approved for a credit card" applications began to arrive addressed to "Eustacia J. Pidguin." So apparently MasterCharge and Visa were willing to troll for customers in the subscription rolls of SUPER FRIENDS, way back when mood rings and Skittles were the big advertisers in comics.

For years, the fanciest of the "You have been approved" certtificated was taped to the wall -- low, near the baseboard, just over Eustacia's food dish.

I thought it was interesting the types of junk mail I would get. A bottle of pheromones that can attract women [If it were that easy, there wouldn't be a lonely man in the world]. Several series of books about unexplained phenomena [which I had to order, of course]. These companies must think sci-fi fans are pretty wacky.

Try having MY name. I love seeing all the attempts to spell that lovely Norwegian last name I got from my lovely husband. Heh.

The name Tegan makes me think of a Dr. Who sidekick back in the early 80's.

Regarding the Zarnock blog announcement on the "Mighty Mini-Con" myspace page...

did anyone else find this excerpt slightly amusing?

He made his screen debut playing Artie, the sleazy comic book publisher in the "Catch Your Breath Productions", film "Detour"...

These days it seems irony swirls about Olney as much as his B.O.

Folks, if you are an industry professional (retailer, creator, media, publisher) interested in getting the word out about Olney please PM me when you are able.

I have something you should see.

Could you give me a preview by PM?

Mr. Zarnock has been contacted. I see that he's into charity work. I made sure he was aware Olney is being investigated for charity fraud.

Ok...also PM me (if you can't say here) his response.

While you guys are at it, you might want to contact the Hero Initiative

http://www.heroinitiative.org/

Olney has them on his top friends list at myspace. Not that it means anything. But I figured they should be made aware of his dubious practices involving other charities, etc.

Has anyoen done this? Tom? Do you want to do the honors here?

Guess what I got in the mail today?

you know it's funny, Rick quickly changed "Blue Scarab" to "Battle bug" after finding out here that it was taken..

I wonder how long Monster Squad will be the title of an "upcoming TLE book"?

I was watching Be Cool on cable, and something Cedric The Entertainer's character said reminded me of when Rick went off on his racist epitaphs...

Sin LaSalle (http://imdb.com/name/nm0147825/): Have you lost your mind? I mean, how is it that you can disrespect a mans ethnicity when you know we've influenced nearly every facet of white America... from our music to our style of dress. Not to mention your basic imitation of our sense of cool; walk, talk, dress, mannerisms... we enrich your very existence, all the while contributing to the gross national product through our achievements in corporate America. It's these conceits that comfort me when I am faced with the ignorant, cowardly, bitter and bigoted, who *have* no talent, no guts? people like you who desecrate things they don't understand when the truth is - you should say thank-you, man? and go on about your way. But apparently you are incapable of doing that! So...

[shoots his gun]

Sin LaSalle (http://imdb.com/name/nm0147825/): ... and don't tell me to be cool. I *am* cool!

For some reason that amused me so I thought I'd share it. :p

Mr. Stillwell,
Thank you so much for your heads-up!
I will certainly take it under advisement and yes, I have read much about Mr. Olney and his attempts at putting on a show.
I don't have any signed contracts yet, but from what I read, it makes no difference.....
If I may ask, where did you see my name posted? This is the first that I have heard of any advertisement.
Thanx again.

BWAAHAAHAAAAA!!!!!!!!!! Oh man, that's rich! The guy is an "official" guest, and didn't know it. Heh...!

One thing I found funny, was that everytime he's added a "guest" they automatically get moved to the Top 10 of his "Friends" listings on MySpace.

Actually there are two things I started the cafepress.com/unscrewed thing, but slowly started going over to using my zazzle.com/dannydonovan account because cafepress makes you pay to join their "premire account" thing to be able to have the same product with a different design on it, whereas Zazzle lets you put up however many things you want.

Burt, I never said he (Jason) wasn't talented. Just curious as to why that particular layout. Though the first part of my comment was in jest the second part wasn't. It could appear (from that angle) to be a Micronaut type of thing which I really would like to know. Is Rick "borrowing" from the Micronauts now? Hmmmm... could be.

guys. .

why are y'all picking on this picture?

it's honestly not bad. Everyone has a different style, and if it's not to your taste? fine. I despise big-eyed manga crap. . but it doesn't mean the artist isn't talented.

the Stinky one didn't draw this picture. . . someone did it for him.

don't misplace your distaste for pRick towards someone who is trying to work.

It's created by Rick, but you are right. I don't think anyone is being terribly overtly mean. Like I said, there's a lot there that could be a fantastically dynamic manga thing.

Although this isn't what I would dub as manga.

<mick foley style shameless plug> This:

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/dannydonovan3/nocturne_poster_03_layout.jpg

is more of a manga style. *thumbs up and goofy smile* </ mick foley style shameless plug>

Jason has what has been dubbed more of an amerimanga style, if you must quantify it as such. Popularized by the likes of J.S. Campbell, Joe Mad, etc. with a mix of the graphitti style of Jim Mahfood, Scottie Young and the like.

I have nothing against Jason's picture there, as I've said in the past it's a fine sketch. But as a teaser image it leaves a lot to be desired. When you are releasing promo art, there's a lot you have to look at. In terms of

a.) style - how effectively does this image convey what your project is about

b.) marketability - how different does this look to stand out from the 1,000s of other teaser images out there

and

c.) conciseness - does this image give you all that you need to no about the project?

the last one is the one we're commenting the most about. The thing in the background, is that his vehicle? part of his body?

I don't think anyone is saying he's not a good artist, a lot of people are saying it's not their taste. and like I said I could offer a hundred suggestions on how to make that image better but I won't because I don't need to be fixing other people's properties.

but I also think that he is being judged by association w/ peanut.

and that judgement. . which certainly WILL come, if he continues to work with (can't be "for" because you have to be paid to be working "for" someone) pRick.

but the judgement shouldn't come from the art style.

it's not to my taste, but it's not "bad", and if criticism is being given, it really should be constructive criticism.

I'm sorry. . this is just leaving a bad taste . . the first time I can say that since peanut stopped posting in the thread. . .

Bert, I understand where you're coming from I really do. But this is what happens when you're in the business. When you post something in public (or someone does it for you) you open yourself up to critiques. Sometimes they can be deserving other times they can be not so.

imo the judgement SHOULD come from the art style. As I said there are a 100 different ways to make that style work as a wonderful promotional piece. And if it were my project I'd have him go back with it with a number of suggestions before he started inking.

I like Jason's potential. I've friended him on comicspace. Myspace as well I think. But this particular image is poorly executed as a promo piece.

Regaurdless of original intention, it IS now a promo piece with the bit of hyperbole "Blue Scarab... uh, Battle Beetle... uh, Devil Bug.. The newest and greatest anime, uh manga hero."

So using that to promote an upcoming project makes the piece that proceedes it makes it a promotional piece.

Personally I wouldn't have posted it unless I thought it was a strong piece to go with my concept.

Did Olney actually claim that George Lucas named a Star Wars character after him to thank him? Are you fucking kidding me?

Thank him for what?

Originally, his story went that he'd had some communications with LucasFilm regarding helping some (or one) sick kid (with cancer, I believe) who was a Star Wars fan. And he & the kid and family were told to see the Episode One film (My guess is to have them mail the ticket stubs to LucasFilm and confirm they saw the film, in order to have something mailed to the kid). This was a letter to him from LucasFilm in response to his approach. (They may have gotten a tour somewhere, I'd have to go check the earliest versions of his story.) Much later, he went into a toy story for something else, and saw the Ric Olie action figure (a very minor character in Episode One, who isn't even named in that film, but rather in the supporting books) - and he bought it, pleased at the similarity of names. He made the assumption at that time that it might be named for him. This assumption later grew to the assertion that it was named for him.

Gail earlier this year tracked down the character creator at LucasFilm for that particular character (ah, nice to have contacts! which one does gain as one's professional career advances [that's an aside to the paramecium, gang!]), which person said that nope, no connection to RO at all.

:D

Actually the whole story (or one of them) was that he sent a bunch of free comics to Skywalker Ranch/Lucasfilm as part of his Orca thing. And he had a character named Ric Ollie who rick claims gave Anakin Skywalker his first flying lesson (even though he was a pilot LONG before he met Obi Wan and crew) as a thank you to Rick for his long time work in getting kids interested in comics.

Now why we should believe Lucas would need Rick's comics when he has an entire library from Dark Horse with his IP that he could call up at any time I have no idea. :p

This will be short and sweet. Far be it of me to take more of your reading time than fair in a first reincarnated blog entry. The image above is that of Ric Olie of Star Wars: Episode One fame. An action figure named after me for small steps that helped and influenced others, by George Lucas and (maybe) Rick Berman. The character of Ric Olie was played by an actor name of Ralph Brown. Ralph had a few lines in the movie but wasn't mentioned by name. Which suited me fine, as I never expected such an honor in the way of the extended thank you.

And Kurt, I knew what it was about, I just was making a joke at the delusional aspect of Orka-la.

Just in case anyone should get any ideas, it's not even a reference to Olney.

It's a name formed by Oswald (the Prankster) Loomis's initials.

THE PRANKSTER?!!? Oh MAN! I am missing so freaking much Superman goodness from you on that title. Finally the Superman has come back to DC. Apologies to the Rock. DAMN THIS RECESSION! I speak of my personal recession of course.

It was a rather good issue. Although it was kind of wierd reading Nitro G's dialogue after watching "Be Cool" on TV. I kept hearing Vince Vaughn's voice in my head. "twinkle twinkle baby, twinkle twinkle."

We're a small, yet creationally diverse entertainment fanzine, based in upstate New York that is dedicated to bringing the world of comic-book entertainment and popular arts to the world beyond the present day normal. Sure, as comic fans, we all love reading and collecting comic-books, it goes without saying, right? Sure it does!

But there is an entire world of non-comic reading people out there that would enjoy a comic-book if they only knew they still existed, and were as entertaining to read. Well, the Mohawk Valley Comics Newsletter is published for that kind of purpose! We expose the un-exposed! There are plenty of people that don't read comic books. We believe if people gave comic books a read they would enjoy this storytelling medium. So, that's the goal of the Moahwk Valley Comics Newsletter. To expose those unfortunate people to the pleasures of comic book reading. To denounce the myth that comic books are only for kids, but ALSO show younger readers that comics exist for them too! Finally, show the world comic books are for all to enjoy! And we're educating the misinformed readers to that fact everyday.

Be it superheroes, fantasy, all-ages, horror, sci-fi, action-adventure, western, etc. and yes, even small press and mini-comix, we intend to cover every genre out there to reach as many readers as possible. Read our blog! We pledge that every article and column created represents quality product, sparkling effort, and outstanding A+ effort in attempt, achievement, and artistic expression. Our end goal is to be a small periodical packing a big punch that lives up to its name.

If you are a comic fan, and you have friends who are not, but they like movies or books of a certain genre, hopefully you will find something in the next issue of the Mohawk Valley Comics Newsletter that you can share with them. We also pledge to bring new readers into the hobby of buying and reading comic-books.

87 YEARS OLD?

Well, for legal reasons Rick no doubt has this particular venture set up in his dog's name. So the 87 is in dog years... which is 12.4 in human years.

Also, did anyone notice one of his buddies is Beau Smith? Beau is pretty good friends with Chuck Dixon, isn't he? Do you suppose someone should warn Beau that he's inadvertently aligned himself with Stink Bug?

Beau is a good guy, he uses his Myspace basically for promotion. Anytime a new book goes out he keeps people in the loop with a new Bulletin. He accepts all requests, so I wouldn't take his being on Rick's list as being in league with him.

Most of the people on Rick's lists are the kind that accept anyone. plus 3 profiles of his daughter. :p

To be fair, that's just his Orcafresh profile that's friends only. much like his Tightlip Entertainment page. the MMC and MVCN pages are still open.

Personally I find his "friends" on the MVCN page a little interesting.

Cully Hamner - who he's had heated exchanges over and is doing a cover for the unscrewed! anthology.

Tone Rodriguez - who I've heard is doing the art on your story

Beau Smith - for obviously stated reasons

Mike Zarnock - who didn't even know he was a guest before Matt warned him...

and..

The Utica Zoo.. -WTF?

Nope. It falls under "things Marvel turns a blind eye to." They've had some unfortunate experience with the negative publicity that can result when they enforce their trademarks too vigorously, so now they let most fan usage go unless it's pornographic or for profit. That doesn't mean it's a legitimate or legal use, however.

You are entitled to your opinion.

Since you brought it up, from your posts, I don't care much for your "style", either.

Looking on your history on this board, you are just another person looking for a flame war, hence the reason for many of your deragotory comments.

Samuel, I've had my own go-rounds with Pip, and I'm far from his biggest fan, but I have to say you've completely mischaracterized him here. Pip can be pissy as hell when something irritates him, but he absolutely does not go around "looking for a flame war" as you describe him.

Was having a discussion with someone last night about people who link to their blogs or myspace or whatever in a public forum only for everyone to click on that link to find that you MUST BE A FRIEND to read it. It's like saying...I have friends, but YOU are not one of them, so you have no business reading what grand things I have to say.

And we were not even talking about Olney. This was someone else on a forum we both used to visit often.

Actually, the smartest thing Olney could do is to keep his thoughts private, except to people who are good friends of his. The more he talks, the worse he sounds. Taking his profile private is the smartest thing he could ever do.

When I read the initial Mohawk newsletters from a few weeks ago, he seemed like he was going to spend time talking about the comics he loved in his childhood. If Olney spent more time talking about Pete Costanza (an artist he adores from the 60s) and less time talking about his superpowered leggalalal teams, he'd be doing himself a big favor. It wouldn't cleanse him of his numerous past sins, but it would probably make him happy, and no one else would end up owed any money.

Dear YABS Diary,

I've decided that RO is the "Eric Cartman" of the hobby and inudstry of comic book collecting.

1. He's obviously anti-semetic.

2. He hates and is intimidated by women.

3. He's rather rotund. Nothing wrong with that, but when he calls other people out on it, well there's a pot and kettle and a call, you know?

4. He's always scheming to make money, and seems like he's never really done anything honest at all.

5. Oh, yeah. He's a liar, liar, pants on fire.

6. And probably secretly has a thing for Mr. Hat.

So, yeah. That's where I stand with the Orca-ish one. Other than that, life is rocking and rolling. The new Ninja Turtle movie comes out this Friday and I am STOKED!

That's all for now, YABS Diary. Take care, and I'll talk to you later.

Love,

Will :)

I'm currently reading Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle books, including the prequel Cryptonomicon. Each book is at least 900 pages, and there are 4 books, so 1400 pages isn't that long by comparison.

$10, 000 for Tales of the Spooky #1.

Plus his staff (i.e.e Ronee, Tim etc) plus other unpublished comics plus comics bought from comic stores (2-4 stores in all) plus all the creators he bought to his "conventions" plus other things.

Where's Matt when ya need him? LOL It varies from person to person. Myself he owes a lousy $50 (never paid. sad ain't it?) and others that I do know he owes in the thousands for artwork created for him. Not to mention all the other deals he had with big names flying them to his conventions (one being Gail Simone) and such which he's never bothered to repay. Altogether I think his debt is estimated at around 100 grand. If you head over to www.unscrewedcomic.com you can get more accurate info than I can tell you. He did everything very business like in the beginning contracts, NDA's, etc. but when it came time to pay everyone it suddenly became just a hobby. I guess in his mind that excuses him from incurred debt. In reality it doesn't. I know a few creators that pull similar crapola and don't show any remorse about what they've done or care about paying anyone back. Unscrewed has been long overdue in the comics industry.

It's not just the comic company, it's also the 2 conventions Mighty Mini Con and The Spooky. The vendors he's screwed over and his guests he's promised to bring in only to cancel and screw over as many people as possible.

How did he get into debt for 100 grand with an independent comic company? Oh my god...!

To his *ahem* credit, Olney claims the amount owed is not near 100 G. But most estimates do have him owing 5 figures easily.

He promised big page rates and paid NO ONE. He claims that he doesn't have to pay because his artists broke their NDAs when they all complained publicly that they weren't paid.

He's threatened to sue every person involved, but didn't show up to court when he's been sued, and has a few default judgements against him (and his wife, co-owner of the comic company he created) already. He's claimed that these will be thrown out at a later date when his 2 crack legal teams square everything out; however, there's no evidence he has an attorney, and it's much more likely he's talking out of his...ignorance.

Until he made history by being the first person banned on Gail's board, he would show up and insult everyone here. He's played verbal games with those he owes, and he insults those who try to sort out exactly what happened.

He's trying to throw another one of his Mighty Mini-Cons in New York- he's held some before, and has also cancelled some before at the last moment, inconveniencing guests, dealers, and customers. There is no announced location or guest list, only a shot glass with "COMIC BOOK REJECTS" and some sort of parody about the Unscrewed site that I forget.

He's the rare 1% of people "involved" in comics that I've found unlikable. Most real pros, such as Gail and yourself, are really quite wonderful and charming. (I've read some of your interviews, Ethan, and you sound like a decent chap. And you're a hell of an artist!) I'm glad you're around and he's not.

As near as we can tell, his debts are somewhere between $60,000 and $100,000, possibly more. Rick gives a lower figure because there are bills he's simply decided he doesn't have to pay.

How he got there: As soon as anybody asked for payment, they were fired and replaced. A large part of Tales of the Spooky was drawn and re-drawn at least three times. Plus all the convention shenanigans, plus he's been sued by a comic shop for not paying his tab, which was somewhere in the vicinity of $1200 or so, if I recall correctly.

But based on his speedy responses to anything posted in this thread over the last couple of weeks, I think he's grasped the notion that we're not playing. He's used to this stuff all ending up in people typing harsh words at each other until somebody (usually him) got banned, then moving on to another forum to repeat the process. We refused to ban him for months, and now he's getting handed subpoenas and summonses and certified letters full of unnerving legal terminology, and the thought has finally nested in his pea-sized brain (he has a second rudimentary brain at the base of his spine to make his legs move) that actions have consequences, and those consequences bite hard and without mercy.

When you have no intention of paying, you can offer very generous rates.

He always promised a fair rate. Which is how he got Chuck Dixon, he was willing to pay his DC rate. However he never got passed the promise stage. And then if you complain you broke your NDA and thus he doesn't have to pay, and he'll sue with his "leaggle temes."

He tried to scam me out of a custom quilt, and when I didn't just make the damn thing and give it to him out of the goodness of my heart and for "publicity", he calls me on this very thread "Ms. Sour Grapes" because I didn't get the money for it? Nothing ever came out, because everyone broke their NDAs by wanting money they were promised. And a slew of other excuses that ranged from "everyone I ever knew got killed by um, locusts or something." to "You opened yourself up to legal action by speaking up."

No profits. No conventions for 2 years running. No books ever published. None of it his fault. It was all "cyber bullies who don't respect his NDAs"

Why would anyone work for him instead of Marvel, DC or Image? Was he offering a tempting enough salary?

He'd feed you a bunch of slick flattering lines, stroke your ego and promise VERY generous rates. Throw in the misleading NDA's, contracts and etc. you'd think he was on the up and up. Then the work got completed and he'd stall you with a "check's in the mail" excuse or some irrelevant piece of technology he has broke down. Then he'd threaten with lawsuits claiming you broke the precious NDA by telling everyone he's a deadbeat. It wasn't until word got around and Thank God it did that his victims discovered there were many more out there. We weren't alone. So now we've banded together to put a stop to this man's victimizing. As you can tell I'm passionate about this ideal. I've been the victim a few times myself. If we can prevent it from happening to other fresh new talent we'll have accomplished our goal.
