View Full Version : Rick Olney--Fibber or Mega-Giganta-Fibber?

Let's not be too disrespectful to Jason Dube. The only mistake he has made so far is the same one far too many people on this thread have made. In a year he is going to be hanging out with us, ya know.
AGREED.
When Rick screws this guy like he's screwed everyone else, he's going to be just another victim. He just doesn't know what kind of 'man' Rick is yet.

Apparently does independent manga work. Has a pretty quirky style.

I'm not keen on his style, although he definitely has a sense of composition. All he's got displayed are pin-ups, so no way to tell how his storytelling is. But then, Mr Olney only needs a person to justify his ego. Even if the guy couldn't draw at all, Olney would need a guest.
I'm surprised Olney hasn't started targeting bloggers. We're a fairly egotistical bunch. Then again, we also tend to read, a lot, which means we're more likely to know what he's up to.
Oh, and Happy Pi Day, everyone!

Well, he did imply that I'm a "cannabal", so I guess I'm on his list too. I just haven't made the "short list". And let's face it, Johanna and Heidi are both considerably more active, interesting and high-profile than I am, so they are better targets than a third-tier blogger like myself.
I just wondered why he hadn't targeted some egotistical blogger as a potential guest at his "con", as he's clearly going to have bad luck with creators.

I just looked him up at ComicSpace, as well.
I'm not going to say that I wish I hadn't, but I will say that I was greatly underwhelmed.
I'm happy he has his act together enough to produce pages and get a comic together, though. That says something about his determination right there.
On the other hand, I wouldn't hire him to do anything for me, personally, or recommend him for Paper Dragonz. Not based on what I saw there. (Even though I don't like the style of art, I have a story that would fit it perfectly.)
Like Tom said, it's hard to make out anything that's going on in the story.
It reminds me of something that someone on Digital Webbing once tried to sell me on- graphiti. It was extremely stylized and it was hard to make out what was happening on the page. This person was convinced that he could tap into the graphiti world with this concept. I told him he was about as wrong as wrong could be. He bumped heads with a few creators there for a while, though.
I have no idea what happened to him. I doubt he ever followed through with trying to reach that demographic. Mr. Dube's art is somewhat in that same vein.
Anyway, we all know what's gonna happen. Let's just not be mean to him when it does.

I give it about 2 months, assuming Rick is not in prison by now.
From what I understand Jim is currently a "crumb catcher" that is "easily pulled around by his nose"
So usually you have a good few weeks before you make it to the short list. But considering how many are ahead of him to GET ON the short list. It could take some time.
I suggest Jim bring reading material.

While I'm all for the more he loses the better, how many do we know that he's actually lost?
1: the first on that was announced in this thread, with no details and no foolow-up.

He's 33!
:p
Oh and this is something we hadn't brought up before. Someone commented on Rick's "I'm messy, so I'm brilliant, and Colleen and I are like peas in a pod" message. Apparently he's saddened Colleen didn't take any honor in being likened to Ricky boy.
Wow... welcome back. Heh, heh...
Clutter in a person's work space isn't as bad as the clutter in their own mind.
Even Colleen Doran didn't recognize the compliment paid to her in my blog. But that's okay. You're supposed to be sucked into thinking that they're the good guys and I'm the bad guy. Thing is, were that true? Then "Gail Simone" wouldn't be milking that thread forum for all its worth.

I have no objection to mentioning his character issues in the letter, such as his bigoted, bullying, crude, false, homophobic, misogynist, racist, sexist, threatening comments...since all those clarify his manner of doing business.

Today, I suck. Six hours at the keyboard and only 1500 words to show for it. Reviewed Kurt's Superman for my next CBG column, made bonehead mistake. I'm changing my name to Sucky McSucksuck.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but I see Tricky Rick has changed the info for his free give-a-way items for his con (pun intended!)...
"Paid weekend admission includes FREE collectable (CBR) COMIC BOOK REJECTS SO-SCREWED glass! Be the first on your block to have a piece of something what promises to make legal comics history!"
Were official 'cease & desist' papers served, that he changed his tune?
And yeah...I like that change of CBR to Comic Book Rejects! Very original!

Okay, I know he's dumb, but really! Who in their right mind would want a glass that has "(CBR) Comic Book Rejects So-Screwed" on it? Especially when the ordinary off-the-street reader is NOT going to have a clue about what ANY of it means???
That has to be the stupidest marketing move I've ever seen! It is spiteful, vindictive, and most important pointless!
It's possible that he was C&D papers. It's also possible (and highly probable) that merely reading the intent to file them here, he took it seriously enough to skittle away from the problem. Which in a way makes it even funnier: while we take nothing he says seriously, he's taking almost everything that we say seriously now. Although, of course, he'll deny that he's doing it in response to anything in this thread, because, you know, he said he would no longer post or respond to things in this thread.

I must admit I have been a lurker here for sometime, and while I am not a creative in the comic field I do work in illustration and design. I got into my field because of my love of comics and while I have moved on to other areas of illustration I have always maintained my love comics and the medium. As a creative my worst nightmare is what has happened here and looking back I can see where I dodged some Onley’esque bullets.
I want to congratulate all the folks who have begun to or have executed their rights as creatives to be paid for their work. By doing this you are protecting the integrity of all creatives not just comic book creators. My thanks. I would like to offer my services as a designer once the unscrewed book begins production if you require someone for layout--all I would need is some decent time in advance---PM me or contact through my site if you require any help, I only wish my offer could be as generous as Mr. Waid’s.
Has anyone posted warnings on sites like penciljack or other illustration forums? I think this might be a good idea as there such an amazing pool of talent out there who are hungry for work that might get caught up in this same kind of amateurish TightLip crap. I just can't imagine what kind of filth would do this to people in the name of comic appreciation.
In conclusion Mr. Olney you are complete and total disgrace to a wonderful medium as well as a group of honorable, talented and dedicated professionals that span far and wide beyond this board.
I wish all of you with pending cases the best of luck, your strength and unity in this whole debacle is inspiring.
Regards

P.S
My apologies for any Onley'esqu typos---lol

I always liked Black Arachnia as a female Transformer.
Arcee wasn't bad for the era she came from.
Yeah, Black Arachnia was great. Sexy, powerful and didn't take crap
Arcee was a filler in pink.
I think she's the reason I didn't wear pink for years.

You know it took me YEARS to get her name?
Arcee = R.C. = Remote Control
I always wondered why she was named after soda.
I wonder if she attended support group meetings with Smurfette? And if anyone realized having a female Transformer only made Starscream come off as MORE gay?
It would have been really cool if she were voiced by Molly Ringwald. :p

I have a great/not so great cookie story from SDCC
My booth was right beside MRS Fields Cookies one year and because there was always a line up, people walked AROUND my booth without even seeing me..
So, my sales that year were not very good. The girls at the booth noticed what was going on and at the end of the show, they gave me there entire stock that was left over, about a dozen cookies, which at the con were 2.50 each. So, I gave them away to other small pressers in the area but kept a chocolate chip for the plane ride home

I have always been attracted to combinations of words that might not make any literal sense, maybe that would help. :)
Somebody I knew came up with Safety Orange Cat, I forget who.
I'm lame, so when I hear weird word juxtapositions, I usually exclaim, "That would be an awesome band name!" And, even more lamely, I forget them, so I cannot share the awesomeness.

Well it was your vault it got taken in the first place! ;) First I lose the JD and
now Blue Scarab and Battle Bug #1's aren't coming out and Ten Inches of Throbbing Pink Jesus and Taken are taken! Whatta rotten day!
I was the Singer/Songwriter/Synthesist for a local Atlanta band called Avant Garage until about 1987. Several friends I jammed with constantly, from other local bands, and myself were planning (before the drummer Mac MacNeilly got stolen by The Jesus Lizard) to form a group to be called either The Dick Sisterz, (the plan was we'd do shows in really obvious drag--beard stubble and smeared lipstick) or Jumpin' Jim Jesus (or any variation) and the Cervical Bruisers--we were a bunch of fringe new wave/Goth/avant-gardecharacters with a deep, burning desire to make fun of the 'hair bands' of the day. If you simply must use a truly, retardedly, male-centric and disgusting name, I grant you full rights to either.:D

I really like Spider Riders. "Calling all spiiiiiiiiiiider riiiiiiiiiiiders."
It's kinda like Visionaries Knights of the Hologram or whatever that was. I admit lately I've been rather disapointed with the dubbing. They seem to be reading rather dry.
"Oh. you. will. not. defeat. me."
"Yes. I. Will."
"Meh. What. Do. I. Care. I. am. just. killing. time. until. Ninja. Turtles."
This is something that has nothing to do with Ricky or anime. But I think Jim would get a kick out of this:
I HARDLY KNEW YOU http://images.comicbookresources.com/litg/litg_gr.gif
I first met Arnold Drake a couple of weeks ago at the New York Comic Con. He seemed frail, but hearty. I bought a Little Lulu sketch from him.
We discussed his Doom Patrol and he told me that he believed only Grant Morrison ever saw in the team what he was trying to do. He was thrilled at the upcoming film version of his Deadman character and was planning on going to the premiere. And he told me how he was fascinated by the comic convention scene, and felt it legitimatized the beliefs he'd held a lifetime.
Arnold Drake passed away earlier today, from pneumonia and septic shock. My condolences to his families and friends.
I get the feeling he'll still make it to that premiere.

Anime's always better when you can read the dialogue. There's no similar system for voice acting in the US, so while in Japan you get movie star and thespian-level voice acting from the major talent, in the states (and canada, come to think of it)... enh.
And when they get most US voice actors to sing... nnnngh.
I was so pissed off about how they mangled some stuff in the gundam seed dub that, if I could travel, I'd audition for anime singing roles just to make sure no more of it gets butchered.
</rant>
(It's not the same in reverse, though. Japanese dubs of anglo dialogue are usually good, in part because they get seiyuu who do anime.)

Thinking about the Great Medina Silo Heist had me giggling out loud when I mentioned it, but the meds are wearing off.
There was this farm property that had been sold. Everything of value on it had also been sold, including two large grain silos.
A guy hired to clear trash from the property returned to the vacant property after completing his work. Over a period of maybe three days, he dismantled
the silos, carted them away, and sold them to another farm.
So, when the actual legal buyer of the silos came to the property, the silos were gone. It took the police about a month to track them down.
What followed was a legal battle between the farm's original owner, the the legal buyer of the stolen silos, and the farm that bought the silos from the guy who stole them. The legal buyer got more money than he paid for the silos from the other farm, the other farm got to keep them, and the silo snatcher got jail time.
Next time I tell this story, I'll bring meds for everyone.
Tony
P.S. Oh, yeah, what reminded me of this story was seeing the Ohio reference on the Action Comics cover.

But otherwise, yes, I agree. It's better to read the words than listen to a poor dub.

I also use to indulge in cookies with M&M's on the top. And a peanut butter dough cookie with a Hershey's kiss plunked right in the center.

Good story, though -- thanks!

Did you, by any chance, read Steven Grant's "Permanent Damage" column back last June where he went on about music and why he no longer does music reviews? He says:
"I once told Bob Schreck the difference between our generation and our parents' generation is that when they heard the music we were listening to they said, 'Oh, how awful, that isn't music!' and when we hear (current pop) music, we think, 'Y'know, it was better the first time.'"

Someone mentioned a joint letter of Olney warning. As long as it sticks to the business-related facts and avoids the puerile fat jokes, smell jokes, and the like, I'll happily sign it. I have no objection to mentioning his character issues in the letter, such as his bigoted, bullying, crude, false, homophobic, misogynist, racist, sexist, threatening comments...since all those clarify his manner of doing business.

Fifth, who are the "appropriate authorities"? An action for libel would be a civil case that he would have to initiate. The case would be Rick Olney vs. ..... There is no one of "Authority" involved. He may forward it to his teams of attorneys (I am thinking he has been reading about the Initiative in the Marvel books. A legal team in every state.), but by now they either have a case or not. Forwarding a message is mighty slim grounds for a libel case IMHO.

A really fun thought entered my head.
If Olney rents a space and tries to hold MMC, even if he gets very few guests and very few booths, even if we know ahead of time that it will be a trainwreck...
...would anyone consider going, just for the chance to meet THE RICK up close and personal (with a clothespin to avoid the smell, of course)?
Just curious.
Heck, I might not even pay to get in- I might just stand outside and watch to see how many paying customers he'd get.

It's a Pavlovian response maybe... but MAN that just sounds too good!! Then I drive by a buffet place, and it's like the car gets a mind of it's own!

This has prompted me to ask a timely question: Do I absolutely have to do the Pay-Pal thingee to buy something from the auction?
Nope. If you win the auction, send me a PM or an e-mail at donate [at] unscrewedcomic [dot] com, and we can work it out from there. We DO take cashier checks and money orders. :)

I haven't really talked much on this site, since I'm one of those people that the less I like someone, the quieter I'm around that person. Which probably helped create the environment where Rick could flourish. However, I was reading the New of the Weird yesterday and saw something that reminded me of him:
The Royal Bank of Scotland, like other banks in the U.K., is widely criticized for charging onerous fees to customers who make mistakes on their account, such as overdrafts or late payments (levying charges of many times the actual costs of handling the mistakes). Customer Declan Purcell of East London sued the bank over the excessive fees and won a default judgment when the bank failed to respond. Armed with a court order entitling him to the equivalent of $6,600, Purcell led bailiffs into a Royal Bank branch lobby in January to seize four computers, two fax machines and cash. [This Is London, 1-19-07]
See? This is why you show up in court. You don't, bad things happen. If they can do this to a large bank, then Rick doesn't have a prayer, besides the one he says every night for God to call lightning down on everyone here. But then, we already knew that.

For six weeks in college I was in a band called "Filthy Phil and the Dirt Merchants," which I still think is the greatest band name ever. I still use "The Dirt Merchants" on Guitar Hero.

Odd. We've had a band here in Columbus for 30 some years with the name Phil Dirt and the Dozers.
C'mon, that's just genius.
